Cavaliers Send Hickson To Kings For Casspi, Future First Round Pick

Jun 30, 2011 2:12 PM EDT

The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired guard/forward Omri Casspi and Sacramento’s first round pick (protected) in the 2012 NBA Draft from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for forward/center J.J. Hickson, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant announced today.

Casspi, 23, played in 71 games (27 starts) during the 2010-11 season, averaging 8.6 points on .412 shooting, including .372 from three-point range, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 24.1 minutes per game. In his 27 starts, he increased his averages to 10.7 points on .435 shooting, 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 31.3 minutes per game. The 6-foot-9, 225-pounder was born in Yavne, Israel and became the first Israeli player to be drafted in the first round (23rd overall in the 2009 NBA Draft) as well as the first player from Israel to play in the NBA when he made his debut on October 28, 2009 at Oklahoma City. In his two seasons in the NBA, he has career averages of 9.5 points on .431 shooting, 4.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 24.6 minutes per game in 148 games (58 starts).

The first round pick acquired from Sacramento is lottery-protected in 2012 (1-14). The pick is then protected in 2013 (1-13), 2014 (1-12) and 2015-2017 (1-10). If the pick is not conveyed by 2017, then Sacramento will convey its own 2017 second round draft pick to the Cavaliers protected (56-60).

“We want to thank J.J. for his hard work and contributions to the Cavaliers, both on the court and off the court in the community. This is another step in our on-going process to shape and position our team and roster for future growth and a platform for sustained success,” said Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant. “We’re excited to add a young, talented, tough-minded player like Omri, that we feel is a good fit for our team and can help improve our perimeter group, while also being able to obtain another important asset with the additional first round draft pick.”

Neither player is worth acquiring. Can't believe Cowtown threw in a first.

seriously.

you know what's even funnier? In Blanks, we've now got one of the guys from Cleveland that wouldn't give up Hickson for Amare! AWESOME HIRE!

Put Amare on that team, and they have a legit chance of winning a championship that year and retaining Lebron.

yup. that cleveland FO was an epic disaster. all they did was surround LeBron with ridiculously over the hill all-stars of fringe all-stars, while not going after Amare because of JJ Hickson and choosing Larry Hughes over Joe Johnson when they had the chance.

Here's an interesting question.

Suppose next year the Kings have acquired the 27th pick in the draft and their own pick is #12. Are they required to give the Cavs the 27th pick? Can they give them the 27th pick if they choose to - and have it satisfy the terms of the deal? Can the Cavs refuse to take the 27th if they so choose?

So now the Kings have Hickson, Cousins, and Jason Thompson at the PF spot? Maybe the Suns can take Thompson off their hands in a sign and trade for Aaron Brooks?

The dude averaged 17/11 in the last half of the season. He's got promise with essentially the same body of work of Gortat. I'd have liked to see the Suns try to get him....

I think that depends on the exact specifics of the trade agreement. In the case of the Suns/Houston trade, it was explicitly specified in the trade that Houston would get Orlando's pick if the Suns' own pick fell in the lottery. I don't think teams have the option to substitute a pick for another, unless explicitly agreed upon.

I'm surprised that the Cavaliers are bailing on Hickson right when it looked like he was starting to turn it around. He's only 22 and his per-minute numbers are very good.

Agreed, considering what it took to get him, I'm disappointed that we didn't get involved.

That is because Hickson's numbers are empty.

Putting up numbers on the worst team in the NBA is pretty much meaningless.

I don't buy that argument. In fact, it's a ridiculous argument. He still has to put those numbers up against an opposing team that puts forth a defense against CLE players. Besides that, it's not as though his numbers are inefficient (e.g., it takes him 28 shots per game to get 17 points). He shoots something like 46% and about 20 percentage points better from the stripe. There is room for improvement on both for sure, but those numbers put him on the higher end of average anyway.

They must be trying to unload Baron Davis for a PF/C. Maybe a Oden or someone else with a bad contract.... Yao???
