Hines Ward is said to be done in Pittsburgh. Still wants to play.

If he's healthy and not too expensive, wouldn't he be a major upgrade over Stuckey as our slot WR?

Has the added advantage of the "Pittsburgh connection" with Wiz & Co.

I read somewhere (think Urban twitter) that 16 of his 40+ catches came from behind the line of scrimmage. Telling sign that the guy is toast.

IMO he's basically done Jeff & he will make more than most off the scrap heap because of his years of service. If you've watched him he really can't run very well at all.

My initial reaction was hell no. He is over the hill. Then I thought about it and felt that you are right he is better than Stuckey and would probably come at a lesser rate if he still wants to play. He would provide veteran leadership, work well with Fitz and everybody. He won't be a starter but gives us many intangibles. Really, why not???

Precisely.

Raises the more general question - Rosterwise, are we good enough to add a few experienced but less athletic role players (who specialize in one or two key things) to the bottom of our roster? (i.e. make Ward our #5 receiver and look for one or two high- impact big guys or blazers to push Or replace Roberts and S Williams?

Might be a way to free up more money to pay the "core."

Id like to think that Hines is smart enough to just walk away. Great "football" player in every sense of the word.

Maybe as a tight ends coach. I'm sure he has leadership and value in mentoring the young kids, but I don't want to see him on the field during a game.

I hate him as a player on the field and I find him to be one of the most overrated WRs to ever put on a uniform. Not to mention he's flat-out done. I would absolutely hate to have him on the team.

Nope. Too many younger, faster, and more talented receivers in free agency and in the draft. We also don't need leadership at the position with Fitz already on the payroll.

By season's end last year, Ward was the #4 receiver in Pitt. That's how far he has fallen.

If the team he has played his entire career doesn't want anything to do with him, why should the Cards? I wouldn't bring him as an #8 WR.

No Way In Hell would I want him on the team. Couldn't stand him as a player and would not support him as a Cardinal. Glad the Steelers unceremoniously dumped him. Strictly business.

No. He has been injury-prone and even when healthy not very productive. Get a Robert Meachem or Pierre Garcon, who can become the legitimate #2 WR the team needs to take some pressure off Larry.

The only reason you bring him in is if you think he can be your #2 or #3 WR. Of Which I highly doubt he could beat out Doucet or Roberts in this stage of their careers. So if you are bringing him in to replace Stuckey as your #4 WR he better be able to play special teams, of which he cannot.

A #4 or maybe even #5 WR that cant play special teams, No Thanks.

Took off my rose colored glasses this morning. Hines really is finished and it would be a mistake to sign him even as a 4th receiver and for his leadership.
We need to develop and keep young players not over the hill veterans.

Stuckey >>>> Hines Ward in 2012. Dude has absolutely nothing left in the tank.

And I don't think he plays special teams.

I would love to see it form two points. He is a GREAT locker room guy and had a very positive impacts on the Steelers young receivers. Plus I think he could also be an effective 3rd down possession receiver.

If you could get him for the right price, I say all the above will be more than worth it.

The second half of last season shows we have leadership in the lockeroom and we simply don't need a third down possession receiver (IMO).

(Go to NFL.com - and check out how bad his numbers were)

We don't need a 3rd down possession receiver?!?!? When Larry was double teamed we had trouble even getting 5 and out or hook pattern completed to pick up the rest of the yards.

Well, you can have the old man, I prefer the younger Roberts and our three T-ends when it comes time to covert a short third down.

He was virtually begging to stay in Pitt, and they said no thanks. What does that say?

H. W. 8.3 yards per reception.
