I guess Holt's agents are now aware that he may be cut :).

CARDINALS RELEASE

THREE PLAYERS

Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has released defensive lineman CHRIS COOPER, free safety TERRENCE HOLT and tackle OLIVER ROSS.

Cooper appeared in 25 games over the past two seasons for the Cardinals and collected 31 tackles and two sacks.

Holt, who was signed last year as a free agent, started all 16 games at free safety in 2007 and collected 75 tackles.

Ross, who missed the 2007 on injured reserve due to a left triceps injury suffered in training camp, played three seasons for the Cardinals and started in 17 games at tackle after signing as a free agent in 2005

Good on all 3. There needs to be a few more as well IMO including Shipp and a few other restructures as well. Cooper was our classic preseason hero who doesnt do a thing in actual games, I say good riddance to his almost 1 Mill salary. Can get a UDFA at a 1/4 of the price that will do just as well as he did.

Fitzgerald’s cap number for 2008 is scheduled to be around $16.5 million. The franchise tag on linebacker Karlos Dansby also will eat up more than $8 million on the cap.

The amount of money available under the new CBA is amazing. Take out the two cap hits above and the Cards would still have $91.5 million left. SIX million dollars more than where the salary cap was in 2005.

Agreed.

Good moves by the Cardinals.

I would imagine that clears up some cap room.

I hope the team re-signs Cooper to the vet minimum. This kid can play, we've all seen it. Plus, right now there is no one behind Dockett and Smith at 3-4 DE. Rodney Bailey is a UFA, although he probably will be signed to the vet minimum. Still, we need some depth there...and Cooper CAN rush the passer, an even greater need.

As attributed by his 1 sack per year average with the Cards. HIs vet minimum salary isn't even what he's worth. He brings nice effort but let's get some legit depth, not roster spot fillers like Ross K. ,Tafoya, and Cooper.

He's more capable than that. You are giving him short shrift.

He may be more capable but that's what he's done. That's what you have to go by. That's the same reason i'm not sold on Pace. His overall career is nothing. His 5-6 good games last year showed something. I like the results better than how they look or what we perceive they can do.

So, if I understand correctly by Joe's spread sheet, Holt saves 3.5 mil, Ross 2.8 mil. (or is the bonus a roster bonus) and 900K for Cooper. That is 7.2 mil. plus what we save on Berry's restructure. So did we possibly cut 10 mil. off the cap with these moves??????

I think if you said this kid can play IN PRESEASON, I would have to agree. As for regular season games he made very little impact if any at all. 22nd leading tackler on the team, 0 sacks, 0 Tackles for loss, 0 FF's, 0 FR's, 0 passes defensed, 0 QB pressures, and 1 QB hit. Does not tell the story of a guy that can rush the passer. The over 300 pound NT who was injured for half the season, Branch was at least able to get 3 QB hits to his name, which says a lot about Coopers lack of production. When you add up the pass rush stats of sacks, QB hits, and QB pressures Cooper is 13th on the list. You can find a UDFA that can do the same amount of production as that.
