Guy is 30 years old and has been an incredible safety blanket for Kyler. He should still be a top receiver for the next 3 years. What about his performance last year indicated regression?
Thank you for making my point. We should learn our lessons from the recent past (Chandler Jones, anyone?) and sell high rather than run out the string on an aging vet just because they're good right this second. If we extend him, the deal will suck in the back end and the bill will come due, and we'll get nothing. If we trade him, we'll get decent draft compensation, cap savings immediately, and won't be saddled with a bad deal later.

Or we could just keep doing what Keim was doing. He did a bang up job with the roster.

Ha, I'm glad you have the crystal ball out for Hop - hopefully the teams thinking about trading for him know he's going to turn into a pumpkin almost immediately!

Who knows what we get back if we trade him? We could get cap savings by extending him as well, right? How do you know it's going to be a bad deal in the future? A lot of assuming going on here.

We have lots of holes to fill and roles to figure out - figuring out a #1 WR would be another huge one.

Everything you don't like is a Keim move now?

I know he is a great player and would be extremely hard to replace but look how many games he has missed the last couple of seasons due to injury and Suspension. I wouldn't want to give him away. I would be looking for a first. We are not going to be winning a Super Bowl this year with or without him. I would rather go younger through the draft or even free agents. Hollywood is still under contract this year, see how he plays and offer him a contract if he is worth keeping.
Yeah, I wouldn't hate it if we could get a mid-late first (like where AJ Brown/Hollywood went last year) from a team that thinks they are a stud WR away and replace Hop with Smith-Njigba or Addison for the longer haul.

Assuming that paying big money to a WR at almost 35 years of age isn't really assuming, though--it's simply thinking rationally. We only get cap savings now if we extend Hop, kicking the cap costs down the road. So we'll be paying a 34-year old WR top dollar, won't get a bit of compensation back for him, and we'll be in the same damn cap situation we are now. Let's not Keim time it--again. Let's be smart about it.

Who is likely to be more impactful over the next 3 years? Hollywood has also been injured. I'll take the guy that defenses actually game plan for at this point.
Maybe we'll get an OC that can come up with some creativity in the offense and mix up his routes some.

Any trade is effective as of the day it's made. If it were done leading into the draft, the Cards would take a $22m 'dead' money hit on 2023 and add $8.1m to the available Cap. There is no getting around the $22m in 2023.
I’ve heard many trades over the years, where the acquiring team agrees to take on salary as part of the terms of the deal ? I’d personally rather negotiate something like that as opposed to a lower round draft pick if it’s multiple pics.

We are in a tough situation with Hopkins

If we trade him, we take a $22 million hit. If we don't trade him, we take a $30 million hit.

Neither are ideal, so we either extend him and lower the number substantially or bite the bullet and trade him add $8 million to the current cap number.

It's hard to swallow taking a 10% salary cap hit for a very stinking good WR to not be on your team unless this is a complete rebuild year. If that is the case, then I hope we can get a 2nd, but I'd wager it would be for a 3rd and 5th given his age and recent health related concerns..

We can cut him and add 8 mil as well.

The only reason you trade Hopkins is if you can get decent draft capital out of trading him. If not just keep him.

It is the same for Marquise Brown. If you can get a 2nd or a 1st, do it. If not, you debate on taking a 3rd or just let him go and fall back to the comp process.

The overall story here is that it comes down to compensation more than anything else.

Yeah...I don't agree with the get rid of him for a 4th rounder mindset. Hopkins has value on the roster and is still a good player. Having him play out the 2023 season isn't the worst scenario. The least that I would take for him would be a 2nd rounder + mid rounder.

Again, it comes down to compensation. I don't think anyone is saying pass on trading Hopkins for a 1st round pick.

Yeah, I didn't want to mention cutting because that would be silly since you get nothing, and that is only a last resort.

For all of you, here are his numbers:
2023 Total Cap Hit: $30.75M
If Cut or Traded before June 1st, there is a $22.6M in Dead Money and a $8.15M cap savings
If Cut or Traded after June 1st, there is a $11.3M in Dead Money and a $19.45M in cap savings.

One thing I read was his PED suspension removed his no trade clause. Can’t remember where and can’t find it. But, if true maybe makes a trade a bit easier?

People keep quoting the June 1st for trading many players, but everyone keeps leaving this part out.

"The June 1st designation allows teams to divide the accelerated charges across two seasons. While financially the end result is the same, this designation provides teams with more cap flexibility in the current year. After June 1st, future years’ prorated money no longer accelerates into the current league year. Instead, only the current year’s prorated bonuses count towards the salary cap. The remaining prorated money accelerates into the following season.

For example, prior to June 1st, a player with $5 million in prorated bonuses from 2022-2026 whose contract is terminated will have a $5 million dead money cap charge for 2022. Post June 1st, only $1 million will be charged against the cap in 2022, with the remaining $4 million accelerating to the 2023 league year."

Lol “hope and a prayer” he will be 31 when the season starts plenty of references out there of 31+ year old, wide, receivers falling off a cliff with performance just look at AJ Green as a shining example….. there’s more if you care to look. Also has a peds suspension already on the books…. Trade him while he still has value. Extending him another 3-4 years is plain silly. This coming season is a freaking waste anyway, and we all know it. Be pushing 33 before this team is in a possible position to compete.

I really don't understand your point.

There is no incentive for the Cards to do some sort of sign-and-trade deal. Dhop's $19.4m base salary in 2023 and $14.9m in 2024 are relative bargains for the team trading for him, and, no doubt, they'll quickly agree to a new deal that gives him more guaranteed money. So with a trade, the CARDS carry a $22m dead money hit in 2023 and add $8.1m to the available Cap. If they keep him and restructure his base salary, they get $9.1m against the Cap in 2023 and spread the dead money into 2024 and 25.
