I'm all for having flexibility, as long as it A) Is because it plays to the strength of the players we have on the field, or B) It's an adjustment to neutralize the opponents offense.

The 3-4/4-3 wasn't really the problem, it was Pendy playing his cb's 10 yards off the receiver. It was also Pendy rushing only 3 guys. It might as well have been a 3-8 in some of his schemes.

If we're more versatile, it will be better for us down the stretch. Eventually, teams figure out how to beat a defense. If that defense can't adapt to keep the offense off balance, the offense will dictate to the defense all day.

They played 7 yards off, one yard in or out.

Our CBs when playing off... lined up the same way as every other team.

Here we go again. Because when I signed up for specific forum has everything to do with my knowledge of defensive schemes and football in general.

You'll notice the post that I quoted...

Another fantastic thread full of conjecture and overreaction on the ASFN. Glad we can all be consistent. :)

has nothing to do with your knowledge of football but rather your tenure and knowledge of the tendencies of this board.......

Thank you. That is the essence of it.

Stout, you are too sensitive. The curse of being artistic. I PMed you. Mulli tried to ease things. Don't go cutting off your ear and sending it to some pox-ridden ***** you love, eh? Van Gogh did that already.

Hey hey hey...she is NOT pox-ridden ;)

Holy horrific hybrid hysteria batman!

I am concerned about the ability of a team to run a 3-4/4-3 hybrid. I would agree that the 3-4 takes time to learn and execute and that it requires players of a certain type and ability.

I would not say it sucks (in capital letters) or that it is doomed to fail. Even if a person with professional coaching experience made these statements it would not mean they were right.

My point is that Coach Whisenhunt has been here two years and is approaching his third draft. He and his staff are building the foundation they think will lead to success. Are they right? Who knows. But I am glad they are making the decisions and not someone else. I do believe that innovation is an important part of achieving goals. Let's see how it goes before we start typing in capital letters.

Sorry, I didn't bust out the measuring tape....

The point is that when we needed to make a stop, Pendy played Nancy prevent defense with his corners and his DL. You give any quarterback that much time and receivers that much cushion and they'll pick a defense apart.

I bet I know why Butler didn't want to come here, and I don't blame him. We now know that Whisenhunt wants to run the jack-of-all-trades, master of none defense. He has now stated publicly that it won't be a 3-4 or a 4-3, but a bastardization of the two. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! I love Whis as a coach, but this philosophy SUCKS. We're going to wind up...AGAIN...not being able to run either one to perfection. PICK A PHILOSOPHY AND STICK TO IT! God, do I HATE this idea. We are officially stuck with it.

The man took us to the superbowl. What ever he did it must have worked so I would never second guess a coach who was within 2 minutes of winning the superbowl.

Jeez, Stout, you are a fear monger sometimes. In an earlier Urban blog, Whisenhunt said Davis would incorporate more true 3-4 options than before but wanted to keep the ability to use some 4-3 as a change-up.

THAT is the real story.

Edit: Sorry. I lost my head. Go ahead and panic. Whisenhunt got a flawed team to a super bowl. Clearly, he's got his head up his ass. We should interpret every decision he makes as idiotic.

Glad to see you have not lost your touch Skorp. We were within 2 minutes of winning the superbowl. We did not get there by accident. Seems like our coaches are in demand around the league.

Yeah, I responded w/o reading the article. He says that we are going to use BOTH the 3-4 and 4-3 base looks. Probobly to be more flexable and game plan against other teams strengths better. Plus we have better depth to pull it off , IMO.

Whiz say "we are going to use both the 3-4 and 4-3 base looks." A person could read anything into that or nothing at all. How often? against whom? does that mean every game or just until it does not work? does he really mean what he says? was he just talking off the top of his head? Is he lying just to get a response? To take a simple one line quote and base the season on it is not sensible to me. Believe what you see in training camp and the pre season. We are not even sure who will line up on defense yet and that could change a lot of philosophy. Whiz wanted to have a running game until he saw Kurt, Fitz, and Boldin and suddenly he had a new philosophy. Our passing attack became our running game. Situations change philosophies weekly in the NFL. Believe what you see not what you hear no matter who is talking.

I bet if they cut Leinart and failed to re-sign Warner, you might sing a different tune. No, it isn't going to happen, but let's not just rubber stamp everything. I love Whis and what he's done, and I'm fully supportive of most things he's trying. That doesn't mean that I have to like every move or decision he makes. And just because I disagree with it doesn't make me wrong.

Look, YOU can choose to spew man-love no matter what the coach does, but I'm going to take each situation and decision and look at them individually. Yes, I love Coach Whis. No, I won't say I like something just because he does it. Keep your own opinions and don't force them on me.

Way too much hyperbole here.

Exactly. Anyone says word one against any one decision this team makes right now and they can expect to be crucified (yes, that hyperbole was used purposefully ;) )

Granted, my rhetoric was too strong to start the thread. Still, I think I have every right to not like anything about playing some hybrid defense.

We don't really have the personnel yet to be a pure 3-4. We have one average talent true NT on our roster, and a shortage of talented pass rushing OLBs for a 3-4. I would be mad if they didn't try a hybrid given the personnel on our roster.

Fine. I don't give Whis a blank pass to do anything at all just because we made the Super Bowl. In fact, I've said one bad thing about what he wants to do out of everything that's going on, so that makes me crazy. So very sorry to have stepped on so many toes around here.

Fine. So I don't like this hybrid defense. I guess since all you geniuses think it's fine and dandy, my opinion can't possibly have any validity. I guess since our defense has been so tough the last few years, it's a great idea to keep at it from a slightly different angle. I'm off the wall in how crazy I am not to like this idea. Fine.

I didn't know this board had ceased to be a place where anyone could voice an opinion outside of common consensus. I'm terribly sorry to have disturbed everyone's little world by being the voice of insanity. Cleary, insanity isn't NOT liking a continued trend of an unsuccessful defense. My fault. I'm so sorry to have opened my mouth. Carry on, because I guess I'm just completely out of my mind.

Oh, and if you haven't caught it, I offer you all up a whole heaping helping of :sarcasm: Way to go, folks...mob style!

I am just throwing my opinion out there like everyone else. I try to force nothing on anyone as my opinion is only worth the paper it is typed on. We all seem to be fighting more than when we were losers. We should be celebrating but that is just an opinion and clearly wrong. It is the off season. No one has been traded. We lost a couple of coaches and franchised a very good player. We really do not have anything to fight about yet. A lot of people will disagree with me and I will disagree with others. That is sort of the way the board works. Happy days to all of us. Currently I am more worried about the economy or lack of than about our offensive or defensive scheme. Perhaps that is really what is going on here.

No, what's going on is that if anybody in any way criticizes the team or a team decision, it's time for some posters to break out the pitchforks for a lynch mob. Okay, disagree with a person, but taking people to task for not writing the team a blank check as to what they do is silly.

Well, if some posters would replace "will" as in "this will happen..." with this "may" happen... there would perhaps be a touch less disagreement.

do the ravens really use elements of both the 4-3 and 3-4 in their defense, and do all of you think we would be trying to in some way mimic that success? we surely don't match up personnel-wise but if we want a top 3 defense like i assume, look at those more successful than you..

Stout, you admit your rhetoric was too strong to begin the thread and I believe that is what caused the strong responses you received. The majority here tolerate different points of view and opinions quite well. We do get fired up when someone writes opinions that leave no room for disagreement. Let go of your resentment for the way your opinion was treated and next time see what happens when you state your opinion as opinion, not fact. I don't want you to withhold your opinions because you think they will be criticized. Keep on postin' but expect responses in line with the attitude of your original post.

Fair enough. My original post was certainly over the top. It's because, the moment I read that article, I was super upset. Never post angry :D

Still, what I'm describing isn't limited to responses on this thread. So many posters are telling posters to **** because we went to the Super Bowl. It's feast or famine: either everyone blindly supports the team, or else they're being a malcontent. That is only according to some posters, mind you, but it's pretty common in other threads.

This looks like a good place to post this stat:

Yards per game rushing allowed by the Cards the last 5 games of the season.

75.4!

Taking out the "we've never been here before so we don't know how to act" games (Phil, NE & Minn) the Cards have allowed an average of 84.56 yards dating back to the Detroit game in 2007 where they held the Lions to -18 yards rushing.

(For comparison the previous 4 years ('03-'06) rushing averages: 120,131,102,119.)

Who would have ever thought we would live long enough to see the Cards play run defense like that?

What this means to me is that the guys coaching the front 7 have been doing a great job. Since one of those guys is being promoted to DC I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until I see otherwise.

Now about that pass defense........
