April 2 Update from NFL Draft Scout:

Dennis Dixon gracefully executed a five-step drop along the field turf in Oregon's Moshofsky Center field house, knees bouncing, toes tapping, elbows pointed down, football held firmly in the grasp of his long fingers. The former Oregon quarterback showed no effects of the knee injury that ended his senior season prematurely last November. At the conclusion of his drop, Dixon yelled out, "Moneymaker," while his right arm unleashed a deep, tight spiral toward a streaking receiver along the left side. Former Oregon and current Seattle Seahawks receiver Jordan Kent hauled in the 50-yard pass in full stride in the end zone. Such passes could indeed make money for Dixon. But it's been some time since he's thrown a meaningful one. That will change Thursday when Dixon works out in front of NFL scouts for the first time during the pre-NFL draft process. A front-runner for the Heisman Trophy last season before a knee injury ended his season on Nov. 15, Dixon has been unable to participate in any scheduled physical activities before scouts in preparation for the April 26-27 draft. No all-star games. No combine workout. No pro day. His NFL audition, so to speak, boils down to Thursday. "The thing I'm just trying to prove is that my knee is ahead of schedule and I can do the things that they want me to do," Dixon said. - Aaron Fentress, The Oregonian

If he's there in the 5th, I'd love it. I don't think he'll last that long, though.

I think Dixon could be a really interesting pickup for a team that would like to fill out their QB depth chart with a player they could likely mold for other positions.

I'd take him in the 4th. He'd be a great scout team QB to have and after learning from Warner could develop in to a very good #2 QB.

I'll take him in the 3rd. It's a wasted pick anyway.

It's amazing how much we obsess over one pick here. Recent 3rd round picks:

Starting MLB Gerald Hayes
Pro Bowl DT Darnell Dockett
Starting CB Eric Green
Starting TE Leonard Pope

Buster Davis didn't work out but I'd say 4 of the last 5 3rd round picks being starters and one going to Hawaii is pretty good.

QB is not a concern this year, considering we have Matt, Kurt and Brian now. No way we draft a QB when we have much bigger needs this draft. CB and RB in the first two, 1 WR and defensive picks the rest of the way.

If a guy who may be a good, starting QB in the NFL some day is available in the 5th round I think that we should pick him. A couple reasons why -
  1. Well, he may be a starter and Matt hasn't filled his role as savior quite yet
  2. Even if Matt does develop, how much longer is Kurt going to be playing?

It's proof positive that you can get talent from that pick. We completely wiffed on that pick. Considering how well we have done in the past, we should be upset about that pick.

Maybe next year, but not this year. Look at the weaknesses comment from nfldraftcountdown.com. There are some devastating weaknesses. I like pocket passers over runners with bad arms.

Strengths:
Outstanding athleticism...Good speed..Can buy time in the pocket and make plays with his feet...Adequate height with the frame to get bigger...Decent arm strength and has a quick release...A team leader...Throws well on the move...Displays nice ball handling skills...Had a great senior year...Still improving and has some upside.

Weaknesses:
Health and durability are concerns...Needs to bulk up and add some weight...Not comfortable in the pocket and is too eager to take off and run..Will have to adjust to a pro style offense after playing in the spread with the Ducks...Makes too many bad decisions...Poor mechanics & footwork...Accuracy is inconsistent...Much better athlete than quarterback and will need development..Is he committed to football?

Notes:
Spent the summer of 2007 playing baseball in the Atlanta Braves organization as an outfielder after being drafted in the fifth round of the MLB Draft...Also drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 20th round out of high school but did not sign...Tore his left ACL late in the 2007 season...Prior to the injury he was a Heisman Trophy favorite and had his team in the National Championship hunt..He could potentially move to wide receiver if things don't work out under center...Interesting prospect who definitely has some tools to work with....Project with a lot of question marks.

Meh. It's a fifth round pick.

I think the lower you pick Dixon, the more likely it is that he decides that he likes Baseball better. As a 3rd rounder? He'd likely stay. As a 5th or 6th round pick who'll be looked at as a career #2? He'll go play for the Marlins AA club.

I thought the same thing.

I thought signing St. Pierre made drafting a QB unnecessary?

JTS

I think it makes it less of a priority, but St. Pierre is not very good. At all. He has a career passer rating of 39.6 and -3 career rushing yards. He couldn't beat out Charlie Batch or Tommy Maddox for roster spots.

I mean, he's maybe better than Tim Rattay or Tim Hasselback, but he doesn't have a future in the NFL and could be beaten out by a late-round pick or maybe an undrafted rookie FA.

Right, I didn't think St. Pierre was going to unseat anyone ahead of him, just like I don't see Dixon doing that either. And if that's the case, then I'd rather take a chance on a DE or CB in the 5th round, and hope he works out like A. Smith.

If we're going to take a flyer on a QB, I'd rather see us bring in an UDFA.

Bottom line is Dennis Dixon WILL NEVER play a down in a regular season NFL game!!! The guy doesn't have the talent to play QB in this league.

Decent arm strength while making bad decisions is not my ideal backup. So what if his realease is quick, just means he throws it a little sooner to the opposition.
