Does anyone recall any Denny comments from training camp regarding how he felt about Marcel's talent and ability? I guess I am starting to think we dont take a RB until round 2 or 3, but am just grasping at straws.

I got this off the Cards message board, I take it with a grain of salt, did anyone hear Jude LaCava say this?

"Jude La Cava in Phoenix has just said that the Arizona Cardinals are working with Cleveland on deal that would send Willie Green and a 5th round draft choice to the Cards for Left tackle LJ Shelton and running back Marcel Ship to Cleveland."

Damn, so far this FA season is giving me an ulcer.

What I remember is that he only had praises for him (like he did for McCown) but later demoted him and made Emmitt the starter during the training camp. That should tell you something...

That trade is just funny. We are looking for a 2nd round pick for Shelton.

I rather we keep Shipp and LJ than trade for Green.

Denny said that he expected 1000 yards and 8 or 10 TDs from him last season. Basically, he said that he thinks that Marcel Shipp is an average back.

Frankly, though, 1200 yards and 12 TDs is about the new average for an NFL back.

He had a major injury. He is likely to lose a step or two. He will also not excited about running up the middle again.

It's to bad he had the injury, I liked the tugboat noise at SDS after he had a good run.

Jude La Cava. IMO he is the worst out of the AZ media and that says a lot. I really dont mind all of the other sports guys in town but Jude and Kemp I hate. I highly doubt this is true and he probably got it from a Brown Message board. I do know that a friend of mine who lives in Cleveland has heard on local radio that the Browns have called the Cards about about Shelton and Shipp, but as far as any trade guidelines go nothing has come out.

Anyways I would do a Williams Green and a 5th for Shipp deal. Green is actually a mill. cheaper then Shipp. Dont want Green for a starter but neither was Shipp going to be a starter.

Just watched Jude's sportcast at 10:00 pm...he just mentioned the Starks trade (he said we traded him for a third rounder, he left out the swap of fifth rounders) and the other "big" news, Warners visit to Phoenix.

Give it up! Denny was glowing about Shipp last year, his public estimate of what he expected was not said in a way of this is all we will get. It was said in a way of this is the LEAST we will get.

And if 1200 yards and 12 TD's is the average, PLEASE show something to back it up. Because to me, this is just one more shot ar Shipp that is baseless!

It isnt a shot at Shipp, just an observation on the NFL as a whole saying that 1000 yard season just isnt the bench mark anymore. 1200 yards is the new bench mark IMO. 10 RB's did it last year.

1) You don't think that Denny knows that 1000/8 is below-average performance for a starting RB in the NFL these days? If he was all hot-to-trot about Marcel Shipp before the season started, he wouldn't have tried to trade up to get Kevin Jones (and if only we'd been able to!).

2) 18 RBs ran for over 1000 yards last season. Had Priest Holmes stayed healthy, he would have gone over 1000 yards (had 892 after 8 games). Jamal Lewis went over 1000 yards and HE ONLY PLAYED IN 12 GAMES! The top 8 backs in the league averaged over 1300 yards and 10-12 TDs. That's to get into the upper quartile. The benchmark should be about 1200 yards and 10 TDs. 10 RBs did that, 2 more were within 50 yards.

A 1000 yard season is meaningless in today's NFL. It's EXPECTED.

I don't like the trade. They may have inquired but I would think Green and Graves are smarter than giving players the Cardinals need.

Isn't there still an Ask Coach Green link on the official Cardinal website? You might try contacting him.

Benchmark, that I agree with. But to say that 1200 yards is the AVERAGE, that is BS!

Average of the top 20 RB's in rushing yards was 1270 yards. 12 TD's as the "new benchmark" is a laugher though.

Using touchdowns as a metric is pointless and using raw rushing yards doesn't account for teams that use running back by committee. Pittsburgh was second in total rushing yards and KC was fifth. Those teams had one back in the top 20 (Bettis with 941) Both Pittsburgh and KC (Edit: KC was behind the Jets but ahead of NE/SEA) had more total rushing yards than all three teams that had 1600 yard backs despite the fact neither had a thousand yard rusher.
