@Kel Varnsen The dairy industry is fairly big in New Mexico so I was surprised to see this sign in Spanish, I've rarely even seen one in English.

You've probably seen the English version, this translates more or less to: "Not your mom? Not your milk. Choose vegetarian products".

Yes, I like the message on that sign. If you're not a baby cow, why would you think you're meant to drink cow's milk?

Gene Baur is a really nice guy. He established Farm Sanctuary, one of the country's most impressive organizations (and a great place to visit). His points in that article are spot-on. The animal agriculture industry will stop at nothing to keep people from knowing what they do and to block competition. If your products are so good, why would you try to make it illegal for for competitors to even use the word "milk" and "meat" on their plant-based products? The lawsuit to fight the Missouri law about "meat" labeling is being led by the same organizations that have successfully defeated ag-gag laws pushed by the industry.

If the industry was smart, they'd start producing humane meat themselves. Might as well start growing meat via cellular technology themselves instead of losing their market share to startups. It's faster, cheaper, cleaner, safer, more profitable, and doesn't involve brutal treatment of animals and their eventual bloody and vicious slaughter.

I'm not going Vegan. However I have decided to start eating way more Plant based whole foods compared to animal based products. The main reason being health related.

Found some real delicious plant based recipes over here:

Coincidentally, this came out today. Not sure if I posted my thoughts on this elsewhere, but this is almost always the reason for E. coli outbreaks - factory farms produce so much literal Schmidt and are allowed to just liquefy it without treatment and spray it as fertilizer, even when it’s too much for the fields to absorb. So it ends up on crops and poisons people - even vegans.

The latest backlash against veganism is inherently hypocritical. Those calling for a free-market approach to food production are ignoring the fact that this is exactly what Greggs is. What is being painted as an elitist fringe movement is now mainstream, and Piers Morgan et al seem determined that its advocates are simultaneously malnourished waifs, and extremely threatening.

I'm neither of those things, but people do tend to freak out about vegans. I don't get the psychology behind it, but it's pretty bizarre. Vegans have no impact on people like Piers Morgan, so I'm not really sure why he's so upset. I personally choose to be vegan so that no animals are harmed, but I like that it helps the environment and keeps me healthier. I don't try to force it on anyone, but am happy to have an open conversation about it (which is why I originally started this thread, actually). The other weird thing is the "all vegans are crazy/extreme" line, which doesn't make any sense because nobody knows who all the vegans are just by looking at them.

That pizza looks pretty good. For some reason, a lot of restaurants choose England to introduce vegan options. Hopefully they'll eventually offer them here.

Also, I just learned that Carl's Junior now has the vegan Beyond Burger at all of its stores. I buy these at Safeway all the time, but it's awesome that a big burger chain now carries it and promotes it. Beyond Burgers on me if anyone wants to meet up sometime. :) Or Impossible Burgers at Top Golf! Those are my favorite and I'm not quire sure how they ended up at Top Golf, but I'll go there for the burgers.

I'm by no means vegan or even vegetarian but I have all but quit eating beef. I do still eat some pork, eggs and dairy products but I'm slowly giving up that too as well as wheat bread. Fish, rice, beans, corn, legumes are a much larger part of my diet nowadays.


Edit... I still get my daily dose of Roundup .. :)

I just noticed this week that the beans in cans of refried beans are called "prepared beans" or "cooked beans" on the labels (at least on some of the brands). It bothers me that they don't say what the actual bean is. LOL.

Check the ingredients. I don't think there's anything in there but beans. Just add water, that's it. Any good NM chili sauce with no preservatives will do (in a jar) ja ja ja.

I like that concept. I’ll read the article when I have more time. Sounds complicated!

Yeah I think the concept is pretty good too. I'm just not quite getting the financial negatives involved. Most likely Big Ag has a wrench in the works somewhere.

I can give an example of some of the food waste at my house. My wife eats tons of other veggies but doesn't particularly care for lettuce, other than in a salad. I pretty much have to have it or a tuna sandwich isn't a tuna sandwich, kind of thing. Half of it always gets thrown out.

fwiw. At one of my 4 weddings, I roasted 2 small pigs and a cabrito with oakwood in a pit. Not a scrap went to waste.
