I like the idea of sending a message when it's appropriate. Losing control and lashing out doesn't qualify, IMO. I want to see us do it with a calm and controlled measure as Wade did in the example I mentioned. Doing it out of anger just sends the message that the other guy has succeeded in pulling your strings.

Being a tough team doesn't necessarily equate to being a dumb team.
By the same token being a soft team doesn't necessarily mean you're a smarter team.
Which would you rather be?

I stand by my assessment. Saying that it's okay when "calm and controlled" but not okay when "out of anger" is relying on the officials or the league office to be impartial when determining the difference. I think we all know how well that is likely to work out. Stern has made it very clear that anyone not following his rules faces a punishment of arbitrary and unpredictable magnitude. Given that that's the power structure that's in place, the only sensible response, as cynical as it might seem, is to comply.

I just don't think we're talking about the same thing. I'm not advocating anything then puts the team in jeopardy. You can deliver a hard foul without getting yourself suspended, most teams do this on more than the rare occasion. The only time we do it is when we get mad and over-react. When you do that, the other guy has already won.

I like it even better when hard fouls are the rule. "And Ones" should be the result of a spectacular play not just a weak reach in.

The context was Pierce's stare-down of Frye. The play was over.

That may have been your context but it certainly wasn't mine. I was speaking in general. I had started the "message foul" conversation much earlier in this thread and was referencing the way in which Wade handled a cheap shot from KG.
