If...

1. We reduce our stupid penalties (highest in the NFL)
2. Reduce our turnovers
3. Fix our O-line
4. Fix our horrible special teams (except for Rackers, of course)
5. Find a running game
6. Get a monster DT
7. Continue to improve on passing offense and overall defense

Then, yes, we will kick ass next year.

It's groundhog day....

Twighlight zone.

Oh and wait there's more, coaching changes.

It's pretty much an endless loop.

So this will sound like Green bashing but what the hey.

look at the talent we started with this year, look at the talent SF started with. Look at all the injuries we had, look at all the injuries they had. Look at the final standings, they were outscored by 191 points this year, us by 76. They had a rookie coach who looked completely over his head this year, a rookie QB who had no business starting 7 games, played the whole year without their leading receiver(Johnson the TE), had massive injuries to their OL, their DB's, and at QB. They switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 this year.

And at the end of the day, we won ONE more game than they did this year in the same division?

On paper and on the field we were a vastly better team than them this year it's just really hard for me to grasp how we only won one more game, we even had an easier schedule than them (.508 to .539 opponent win %).

And yet, under Dennis Green the Cardinals have the best offense and defense units since how long? Regardless of the record, I think this team is so close to being what we envision it to be.

Yardage wise we look very close, it's the scoring that's the problem, and that's kind of what I'm getting at.

We should have gone 7-9 this year given the schedule, the points scored to points allowed, and everything else. At worst 6-10, 5-11 is really difficult to do when you're only outscored by about 5 a game. SF outscored by 12 a game managed to win 4 games somehow, just another example of how incapable of winning this franchise seems to be.

You have to beable to run the ball to score TD in the redzone. It is to tight to ONLY pass there. Rackers probably made a record amount of field goals with in the 30 yardline because we allways stalled there.

Running the ball is our #1 problem.

Then I would say more playmakers on the Defensive end and just overall depth to help the drop off when injuries happen and to improve special teams.

Another good draft, 2 GOOD free agent linemen(And Oline coach). Should be a big step forward.

I think what also factors in is we lost seven of our games to playoff teams. Wash, Car, Seattle twice, Indy, Gints & J'ville

I blame special teams for at least 2 loses this year.

I'd agree with blaming special teams for two directly, but it played a very large part in several others. I think part of the reason our defense looked decent on paper (yds allowed) was that the opposing team never had that far to go after kick and punt returns.

We very well could have won the Carolina, Indy, Washington and Jacksonville games by eliminating 1 mistake in each one (special teams and turnovers).

We also should have won the St Louis game as well if it wasn't for a couple of mistakes.

We are close and its up to the coaches to get the players to play with more discipline.

I'm cautiously optimistic and the firing of 3 coaches today lets me know that the team at least recognizes some of the problems and is making an early effort at improving those areas.

Oh I realize that and I realize the special teams fiasco too. I just think well coached teams win their share of close games, and poorly coached teams lose them.

People correctly point out the special teams were because of all the injuries, but guess who was 3rd in the NFL in fewest yards allowed per kickoff return this year? SF, who had just as many injuries as we did and started with an inferior roster. They were literally signing DB's off the street and starting them throughout the season. Guess who led the NFL in yards per KO return, and allowed 3 TD's this year, us. We gave up 28.3 yards per return, they gave up 20.

Thankfully O'Dea was fired and I really hope he's the problem because it's pretty amazing a team with a rookie coach and no talent whatsoever was able to put together such a good KO coverage team and we couldn't. We were OK on punt return coverage, not great, not bad, but we were the worst KO coverage team in the NFL, and we led the NFL in touchbacks.

I just think it's amazing how poorly coached we were in certain areas. To green's credit 2 of those coaches were not retained, I really hope that helps fix the problem.

Russ,

I'm not about to disagree with your thinking here but I will say that if Rackers were able to kick off over the last five games, some of those returns for TD's would not have happened
