The Suns want to dump D'Antoni's salary? According to who?

I really hate how people project their own opinions onto the truth because it makes it more exciting and dramatic in their minds.

D'Antoni doesn't want the front office meddling so much in his team. The front office wants to make D'Antoni into the type of coach, that he really isn't. This has nothing to do with money, and everything to do with egos. Mike is upset because the FO wants a different type of team than he is willing to coach, so he'd like to move to an organization that supports his style of coaching. Soudns pretty basic (and boring) to me.

But if you read between the lines, "there won't be any more comments until this situation evolves", they are saying they are fine with him walking. And would mtl prefer it.

And how many championships has he won? I thought the goal of any coach (and player, and owner) is to win the championship. Obviously D'Antoni's "offense only" approach can't get it done. And he seems unwilling to alter his approach at all. So what would you do? I want the team to win a championship, I don't give a rat's arse who the damn coach is, as long as he know what it takes to actually win one. D'Antoni has proven to not be able to do that.

Flip Saunders, if the rumors that he's in trouble in Detroit are true.

I think Flip Saunders will bring the same result as D'Antoni. Solid during the regular season, but will flame out in the playoffs. Saunders could never help Minnesota and KG get to a finals appearance and last year Detroit got beat by an inferior Cleveland team. Getting Saunders would be a lateral move.

Hmm, what is your point? Jerry Sloan is a good coach, but if you want to win the championship, you don't hire Jerry Sloan. Or Mike D'Antoni. Shouldn't that be the point?

Given the roster talent Sloan had to dealt with, his Jazz have always overachieved. In comparison, DA's Suns have had much more talent but lost to a less talented team (his own claim) two years in a row. That's why it's frustrating! Watching how the more talented NO beats up on the old Spurs only hurts the heart of Suns fans even more!

I think...

Its too late to "dump" D'Antoni.

Might as well ride his contract out along with Nash and O'Neals, and to a lesser extent Hill.

The team is constructed in a way that changing it will most likely lead to worse results, missing out on playoffs for one.

Suns will be similar to the Mavs this season that motivation is out and most just don't have the "fire" anymore.

Avery was fired... I think Mavs will be worse off next season unless they hit the gold mine somehow and find a system that makes Kidd work with the rest.

Suns, are in a worse situation in terms of "changing" style, as the team is full of 30 year olds who are thriving with the less defense more offense system. Making them change their approach will most likely expose them... these guys do not have the Legs to play "hard" defense and still go all out in the offensive end... quiet frankly... the Suns are below average in terms of athletism, below average in terms of gritty big bodies who play physical, below average in terms of youth etc. They are basically in the middle in most categories, shooting is different, that I said the team focuses on offense more and the energy they have for that end of the court does affect their percentages... not to mention D'Antoni's style.

Changing the system, without athletic players with young legs, lengthy players... big defensive minded players.... well... the team doesnt look too good.

Charles Barkley just said on the Dan Patrick show that "D'antoni doesn't have the balls to resign" he want's the Suns to fire him so he can get paid from Phx and then take the Bulls job

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/danpatrick/

Mike D'Antoni wants his cake and to eat it too. He wants to hold on until the Suns fire him so they pay him, and then get another job.

Barkley should know that we won't fire him. Either he coaches for a new team, or he coaches for the Suns next year. We won't fire him.

Welcome to the board, Coach Messina's agent.
Lol, I was really close to throw Messina's name in my ranting post, but the fact he recently extended his contract with the richest european club kinda tempered my enthusiasm, because there's no way Sarver pay him 3M$ per year.

By the way, SI's Ian Thomsen wrote a piece about him last year http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/ian_thomsen/05/25/lewis.notes/1.html
and Messina ackowledged he'd probably need a year of adjustement, so it's pretty useless to go after him for now.

That's why I think if Kerr and Sarver look for a battlefield tested Fiba coach, they should pursue David Blatt. But we all know they will promote Gentry anyway, unfortunately.

Ironically, Messina succeeded D'Antoni as head coach of Treviso when the later came to Phoenix. But Messina is facial hair free.

How do you all feel about EJ he seems very knowledgable about the game and with some good assistants (defensive) this team might not take a terrible drop off.

I'm all for it....with at least one veteran assistant behind him of course.
Who?
Would Silas take an assistant job behind a rookie HC i wonder?
Lionel Hollins?

We really need an Ivaroni type, a big mans defensive coach for Amare. We can still be good if Nash is the only liability, I mean TP is not a good defensive PG but if you have some D behind him it doesn't matter.

We need to forget about next year. There's no way we're winning the championship next year, even with God as our coach. We have way to many holes, Sarver and Kerr blew this team up when they traded Marion and got nothing in return except an aging two year rental. We need to look to the future, develop amare and start focusing on the draft. We need a builder and a player developer. We need Messina or Blatt. Its not going to happen, but it should.

You do know that Marion was essentially a one year rental at the time of the trade, right?

I tend to agree (well, except for the "Marion/Shaq trade" part because as Chaplin said, Marion would probably have left by next year, leaving us empty-handed anyway).

But Messina said himself he'd like to be an assistant coach for one/more years before taking a Nba head coach job, so he probably won't be available before 2010 or 2011 at best.

SI's Ian Thomsen said:
The most intriguing news from my recent conversation with Messina is that he would be willing to become an NBA assistant for one or more years before seeking employment as a head coach.
"The season is different, the habits are different, even the basketball terminology is different in the Euroleague than it is in the NBA,'' Messina said. "There could be different ways to imagine the process of adjustment should a foreign coach come to the NBA -- it may be as an assistant for some time. I do not have a problem recognizing that an adjustment should be made.''

expiring contracts are evidently quite valuable, nice trade bait. Oh yeah I forgot, the suns give up #1 picks to get rid of expiring contracts, they dont trade them for guys like Pau Gasol.
