If the Rams Cut Michael Sam, Should the Cards Pick Him Up?

This is a Preseason Week 4 Question, if there ever was one:

Despite a very solid preseason so far, Sam is fighting an uphill battle against the Rams' depth at his position. Now it appears Ethan Westbrooks might edge him out because the West Texas A&M product has been been playing out of his mind (think John Brown levels of insanity).

If they cut Sam outright, should the Cards pursue him?

OR

Since it is likely the Rams will try to slip Sam through to the practice squad, stealing him might require a roster spot. Given our depth at the position, would we take a look at adding him to the 53 man roster?

OR

Do we just roll with the options we have?

I have watched 2 of the Rams' preseason games and I have to admit that I was hoping Ethan Westbrooks was the one they'd try to slip through to the PS. That's the guy who has jumped off the screen at me and I would love to have him for quality depth.

Looks like the Rams are thinking the same thing, so I guess Sam will be more likely to be available. Don't get me wrong, he's been a solid contributor too, but I wonder how much of my love for his game came from him taking down Johnny Football a couple of times. :D

This is and always will be a fine line topic. I am one that is happy with what we have and we roll with it. Could Sam play and possibly be a starter here? Yes. Would it be a distraction for the team, who knows. I like our D and our late signees

Not sure why anyone would think he'd be a distraction at this point. Have you seen any evidence that he's been a distraction on the rams so far?

Precisely.

That overblown story has been spiked except for the Tony Dungy's of America.

Yeah. I'm just thinking we need all the pass rush help we can get and he's at least shown the ability to get to the QB in the preseason. I don't know if he'll fit scheme-wise, but I have no doubt he'd be an asset to someone from what he's shown so far.

If the coaches think he can help us, absolutely, pick him up.

No, we have enough guys who just don't quite fit already. Don't need another.

I think he would better fit a 4-3 scheme maybe? He's just one of those "tweeners" who can't play DE and can't play LB.

I'd pass.

BUT, if Arians and Keim thought he was good enough and brought him in, I would be fine with that.

I would say no. I think we are looking for more of a speed-type OLB. I think Shaughnessy, Acho, and Okafor all fill the role Sam would be asked to play in this offense.

I wonder how he does on special teams. I think anyone can use a 3rd down passing situation rusher like him, if he can play special teams and they have room for him. He will only get better I would think as he gets stronger and picks up a couple more moves from his elders.

Well, his name keeps popping up all for the wrong reasons. Majority of the talk is not even about his football playing, unfortunately.

look, the NFL told teams to at least try to pick him up in a late round for the heck of it. The Rams with an absurd 11 picks got him with their 10th and have enough at d line and linebacker which should make any smart person suspicious anyway. It was done for media spin and nothing more.

how so? seems like you're living two or three months in the past with that statement, and back then I would have agreed with you then.

but right now, seems to me the majority of the talk is ALL about football, with articles talking about him making two sacks and two tackles for losses in three games in limited action, but also questioning his ability to play special teams, while wondering if he makes the team on such a loaded d-line. isn't that exactly what they should be talking about, because I haven't seen much of anything during training camp talk about his sexuality as being either a hindrance or help at this point.

Exactly. We've already got 3 players with the same football skills on the roster.

ESPN did a live action report about his shower habits. That doesn't sound like football talk
