If the Suns trade for a big, Marion is most likely to go.

Trading Marion has become one of the more difficult paradoxes that fans of this team will ever face. The reasons contrast so much you'd think it was the choas theory in action. Why trade our most versatile, best defensive 20-10 player in an attempt to IMPROVE our team? The answer to that lies a little in inevitability, and a little in opportunity.

Marion is at or damn near his peak; whether it was slightly back and rapidly coming up. He fills the stat sheet like a gluttonous beast.

This team needs to win yesterday. These sure aren't desperate times, but longtime fans have completely accepted there is no "wait it out" fuel left in them. There is also a great consensus among fans with the "givens" for the team.

-Our defense is grotesque
-We have no depth
-Amare is a power forward

Now back to the original question: Why trade our most versatile, best defensive 20-10 player in an attempt to IMPROVE our team? The answer, unfortunately, is with addition-by-subtraction.

Moving marion allows us to conquer multiple things. It can improve our depth, improve our defense, and put Amare in his natural position. Marion can be moved in exchange for two above average roleplayers: A defensive center and an athletic wing which improves our depth. A defensive center also allows Amare to play the 4, which is currently occupied by our most valuable trading asset. Putting Amare at the 4 ALSO employs addition by subtraction in the sense that removing him from the center spot allows us to put a defensive center in play, allowing Amare to flourish on help defense and shot blocking. Skinner will also be able to spell both amare and the new center, giving us a solid 3 big man rotation which is more than plenty. A young athetic small forward that could take Hill's place would also be an easy piece to obtain from a marion trade. Marion's minute demands at the 3/4 would make it mandatory for any trading team to move their redundant player.

Nash is untouchable
Hill is untouchable
Diaw and Barbosa are BYC near untradable
Banks is not worth trading
Trading Amare makes less sense
Marion is expensive and his production can be replaced by two people for the same cost (17pts 10reb 2blk 2ast can be replaced by a starting center and a backup wing ridiculously easy)

I propose
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/featur...1~2386~3244&teams=20~20~20~21~21~21&te=&cash=

Marion(poss. exp, team leader)/Tucker(futuretalent)/Piat(exp)/ATL(future talent)

for

Dalembert(defensive center)/Iggy(athletic wing)/Young(future talent)

Marion becomes the team leader on a team that can give him the extension he may seek, or becomes a huge expiring contract if they come to those terms. Surprisingly enough, Iggy is considered a 3rd option by many fans and isnt the fan favorite many non-philly fanatics would expect. Piat adds to the salary drop they are expecting when webbers contract comes off the books next season. And they now have PHI '08, UTAH '08, and ATL '08 - locking them into ridiculous pickings for a healthy draft year, along with being potentially 5-20 million dollars under the cap depending on what they do with marion.

Lineup

Nash/Banks
Bell/Barbosa/Strawberry
Hill/Iggy
Amare/Diaw/Young
Dalembert/Skinner

By subtracting marion from our squad, we in turn become one of the deepest, if not THE deepest teams in the league. We also have a promising future with no worries of draft picks with:

Banks/Strawberry
Barbosa
Iggy/Young
Amare/Diaw
Dalembert

The only problem is that Iggy is up for an extension and unless the Suns manage to unload Diaw for an expiring contract I don't see how they would be able to afford him. Essentially he would become a rent-a-player. God I hate Diaw's contract.

They won't trade Iggy for Marion anyway.

Let's see:

Marion/Tucker/Pike/ATL#1 for Iggy/Daly/Young

Personally, I am ALL OVER that trade. I just don't know if that's fair value back to PHI. I think it's actually pretty close, but I wouldn't know how to remedy it given the Suns current contract situations. Maybe replace Barbs for the ATL#1? As much as I'd regret losing Barbs, I think Iggy could step in as our starting 2.

Nash-Iggy-Hill-Stoudemire-Daly

Bell-Diaw-Skinner-Young-Banks

That ain't too bad....

How about:

Mike Miller
Stromile Swift
Darko Milicic

for

Shawn Marion
Boris Diaw

??

I can't say I've seen Darko this year but with his numbers around 6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks, more fitting than Diaw?? Just not sure he's much of a defender?? Allowing the Suns to move Amare to PF, and with Swift and Skinner the Team will be deeper at the big positions (Marks as well)... Hill would more than likely need to play the 4 if the Team wanted to go small but Miller at G/F averages 7+ rebounds... but how it'd be nice to play big for once??

What do yall think??

it's ok to rent Iggy for a year as long as the Suns win the championship.

maybe if that happens,
the FO won't mind paying the luxury tax just to repeat.

I'd do this Trade:

Andre Iguodala
Samuel Dalembert
Rodney Carney
Kevin Ollie

for

Shawn Marion
Leandro Barbosa

I had to add Carney to make the numbers work, so maybe the Suns could buyout Ollie?? Banks would need to step up but with Iguodala, Hill, and Diaw on roster putting up 3-4 assists each...

the Suns should give the Atlanta pick in that trade imo.

Dalembert is not even remotely close to a defensive big. he is amare defensively, that is all....he can shot block but not take guys one on one which is what we need. so my next point....why on earth would the 76ers trade iggy and young (iggy who is already a star and young who is a promising player) for marion who does nothing for that team? he gives them what? a player in his prime who can only help a team win NOW (and w/o dally and iggy that team will not be winning now). They aren't desperate for cap space so they wouldn't do the trade for that. If they did, that would mean they were in rebuild mode. if that was the case, they would keep both young and iggy to build around. no reason for philly to do this, and no reason for us to do it other than iggy.

What do yall think??

stromile swift is even smaller than amare and only averages 4 rebounds as a center. why would we want to pick him up? he solves 0 of our problems. darko has 6/6/2 this year and has NO defensive skills while diaw gives us 7/4/4 and pretty good (though undersized defense). The only good piece we get is mike miller who can help us a lot with his 3 ball shooting, passing, and rebounding but to be honest he is a perimeter-based diaw (who plays more consistently). he is also a mediocre defender. Hill could never play 4 by no stretch of the imagination. he is even more undersized than marion but with less athleticism to make up for it. In essence we lose our best defender and our younger big who does a little of everything (when he shows up to games, granted) for an undersized center who can't rebound, a younger big who can shoot but not play D and hardly rebound, and a very good 3-shooter rebounder. excuse me while i go vomit at the thought of this.

Welcome again to the trade Marion bandwagon, in which I have been the sole passenger from time to time. ;)

But be realistic! The only thing potentially out there might be Marion/Marks/Pike for BenWallace/Thomas/Griffin and cash. And we'd end up with a very solid roster:

Amare/Ben/Diaw/TT/Skinner/Hill/Griffin/Bell/LB/Nash/Banks

that's not even CLOSE to fair value going back to Phily:

Marion might not even resign with them, so they'd be left with Tucker, Pike, and a mid first for Iggy/Dalambert/Young. LAUGHABLE if it happens, and sets their rebuilding back years.

the ONLY way i see a trade between Phoenix and Philly is if a.) Iggy is adament about not resigning for more than is qualifying offer and b.) Marion takes a REASONABLE extention.

and in that trade we'd have to include Barbosa without question.

Well, my point was that talent-wise, it's pretty close, but skewed in our favor. I was not considering salaries and implications that come with that. You make a good point on that....

Nonsense! I've had a fantasy team called the "Trade Marion Bandwagon" for two years running. We even took the championship in a 20-team league last year.

You don't know how long I have been on that bandwagon, I guess.:D

But, congratulations on your championship! I always thought trading Marion would finally get the Suns one.;)

Ben Wallace is oooooold, Ty Thomas is a wannabe Marion, and he has to "want" alot more to become a poor mans marion, maybe in 5 years. The cash will get suns management attention!

Could we somehow get Tyson Chandler?

even if the suns were planning to make a move (which they aren't), no way would NO part with chandler. especially not for anything we could give them
