If we don't get Manning, would you want to see us go after Alex Smith?

It's sounding like the Niners and Smith will not come to an agreement by Tuesday. Supposedly, he wants a Ryan Fitzpatrick type of extension (24 mil garuanteed! over 5 years) and now Sanchez's deal is also huge. The Niners think both contracts are excessive.

Personally, I say "Hell no". I'd rather go with Kolb and Skelton with a full offseason. But, I would bring him in for a visit to give Smith more leverage and to screw the Niners as much as possible.

Not for that kind of money... but he is better than Kolb.

Our luck, we "steal" Smith from the Niners, he remembers that he sucks, the Niners go and sign Flynn to replace Smith and land a pro bowler.

That's like stealing herpes from a prostitute.

When Warner went to SF, that was leverage.

If the Cards bring in Smith, that is a waste of a first-class plane ticket and a steak dinner. The 9ers would not fall for it.

No.. People say he became a better QB last year citing lowest INT record.. But he set an all time sack record for holding on to the ball too long.. Thus, no INT's.. He is still garbage.. And I couldnt be happier that the 49ers got him..

Whatever the Cardinals do at QB I would not count on Kolb.

I would rather get what I could out of my investment in Kolb than double pay on that deal for Alex Smith. We're going to be drafting a first round QB in 2013, regardless.

I'm not violently opposed to it like I suspect most would be, but like K9, I think you ride it out with Kolb/Skelton because of the investment. Smith certainly isn't a sure thing, and there's a good chance it's a lateral move.

I think the Cards are thinking it's Manning or nothing on the QB front unless they draft one in the later rounds.

If we don't get manning, I still want to see Kolb released and Skelton elevated to starter. Bring in another QB to compete with Bartel to be the backup.

To answer the original question about Alex Smith, heck no! Would much rather go with Skelton.

Hell NO!

I prefer to keep on developing Skelton who is much ahead at this time of his short career than Smith was.

And I like your idea of trying to further screw 9ers :)

Would not be wise, IMO. Currently, we have three QBs on the roster who have at least one year of familiarity with the complex offensive system, only Bartel hardly has any on-field experience. If Skelton were to go out with an injury, are you prepared to go into the rest of the season with Bartel as your starter? Not me. Also, cutting Kolb only saves $2 million off the cap, unless the team decides to defer the cap hit to next season (speculation). If it doesn't, you're still looking at the team signing another QB this season for around $1-2million, making the savings marginal at best. Is it worth it to bring in yet another QB, who most likely isn't as talented as Kolb, to learn the entire system?

Also, provided the Cardinals do not land Manning, I don't see this as a plausible scenario. The team invested much more than money into acquiring Kolb, too much to cut him 1/5 of the way into his contract.

At least with Kolb and Skelton on the roster, there is true competition at the QB position.

And because Kolb's your boyfriend.

From a pure football perspective, the Cards would be just as well off with Jason Campbell, David Garrard, Chad Henne, Kyle Orton, Vince Young, or, yes, even Alex Smith. There are a lot of QBs that can go 2-7 and lose the confidence of a coaching staff that had just invested heavily in him.

But I don't think the Cards would be any better off by cutting ties with Kolb. So keep him around and maybe he'll prove himself able to stay healthy and play at an average level. Stranger things have happened in the NFL.

We'll be drafting a quarterback in the first round of the 2012 draft, regardless.

And the bolded part remains hilarious.
