Would the 2017 Patriots model be a way to go?

In case you forget, that’s the season they traded most of their draft picks for vets like Brandin Cooks and Dwayne Allen among others.

if we could trade our 1 for a guy like Mike Evans or Lane Johnson, do you do it?

No, we need to build the OL early.

This is a great year for doing exactely that.

Only thing that would derail that is if they decide to go with a DL 1st.

Hence my question about a guy like Lane Johnson. I’d happily take a vet who can step in and produce versus at a high level versus the crop shoot of a college lineman.

No. Not at all. We can’t afford it. Our team around us is garbage, and the addition of a few top players won’t fix it.

We can’t get immediate gratification. Build the freaking team. Draft some cornerstones of the franchise.

From picks 5-10, I'd rather have the draft pick. Getting a seasoned veteran or an All-Pro to maintain a high level of play can big as big of a crap shoot as the draft.

The Patriots have never much valued the draft. They trade for solid players and develop average players into heroes with great coaching and proper systems. Until we have that stability we need to hit on our draft picks.

Look at the upcoming draft. The top 10 guys look like:

Joe Burrow
Tua Tagovaiola
Chase Young
Andrew Thomas
Austin Jackson
Jerry Jeudy
CeeDee Lamb
Derrick Brown
Jeff Okudah
Isaiah Simmons all in the top tier.

Outside the quarterbacks, any one of those guys will boost our team significantly.

The second tier of guys also could help, but not as immediately. The 11-16 range has

Justin Herbert
Tristan Wirfs
Leviska Shenault
Yetur Gross Matos
Mekhi Becton
Grant Delpit
Kenneth Murray Also all solid guys. We're getting one of them.
