The Golden State Warriors found themselves in a physical battle against the Houston Rockets on Sunday, April 6. Ime Udoka is developing a reputation for implementing a physical brand of basketball on the teams he coaches. Clearly, it's proving to be a valuable tool, especially for a Rockets team that has shown considerable growth under his leadership. It's no surprise, then, that Houston secured a win over the Warriors in that April 6 matchup.
As you would expect, the Warriors' roster didn't hide their frustration over Houston's approach to the game, with Stephen Curry seen having a heated exchange with Udoka.
During an interview with The Athletic following the Rockets' latest win, Udoka revealed his gameplan when facing the Warriors: play physical and make the referees adjust to the style of play during the game. Golden State certainly struggled to match Houston's physicality and intensity throughout the game, even with Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler stepping up their own approach.
“When people start complaining about foul calls or crying about physicality, you’ve done your job,” Udoka said. “That’s the first step in winning the battle. So I told my team, when this team starts crying about it, up the intensity, up the aggressiveness, and make the refs adjust to you.”
While the loss to the Rockets and how they approached the game will be frustrating for the Warriors, the overall game will be a good learning experience for Golden State. Teams are going to try and rattle them during the postseason. So, figuring out ways to counter that brand of basketball, and the physicality that comes with it, will be integral to the team's chances of success.
For now, though, the Warriors will turn their attention toward the Phoenix Suns, who they will play on Tuesday, April 8.
