We fell into this trap with Houston thinking it would be a top pick and it wasn't.

With that said, I'd still make the trade...
Most likely trade candidates IMO are the Broncos at #20 and Chargers at #22. Weaker play-off teams with a couple of huge holes in their roster.

Move back by swapping our 3rd for their 2nd.

Man... I've seen nothing from Monti that indicates he can just as easily find great talent after trading down. If anything, he's proven he CAN'T do so at this point. Traded down away from Will Anderson, then traded down again last season in the second round, and the picks instead of instant major impact makers like Will Anderson and DeJean have been a solid LT ( v. superstar) and bumpy CB rookie season v. instant impact CB.

But now we're going to trust him to find an impact player 18 picks further down in the draft and hoping next year's Giants pick is a bonanza? Folks, continuing to do the same thing and hoping for a different result is the definition of insanity.

something like this I'd be much more amenable to if one of their 2nds was thrown in.

Trading down from Will Anderson is not trading down from #16 in this draft. Everyone in the mid-late teens wants to move down for a reason. The 33rd pick is not much different than the 23rd pick this year. You’ll see the same prospect 15 spots apart depending on which mock draft outlet you look at.

The Draft Pick Value of this trade would be massively in the Cardinals favor. Even if the Giants win the SB next year the Cardinals would come out on top from a draft pick value standpoint of an extra 3rd rounder.

If the Giants end up in bottom third of the league then the Cardinals really come out on top essentially gaining a late 1st round pick worth of value.

The Cardinals would be crazy not to accept this trade! Especially considering that the tier of player they are looking at in the 16-35 range is pretty much the same. Plus several of the players that the Cardinals have been linked to in the first round (DT, Edge, OT, OG) will very likely still be there at 35.
Taking advantage of front offices that are in desperation mode to keep their jobs is good business. I would also consider the Browns who have #33 and two 3rds this year.

I don’t think there are going to be instant impact players taken four picks before or after 16 aside from Jeanty.

Players that are impactful in year two and beyond? Hard to project.

I don’t think you’re gonna get a second there. Maybe a third.

I think a trade down would be the ideal scenario, analysts are really down on the top end talent in this draft. Its just like 2023, where people were saying there were 12 guys in the entire draft with 1st round grades. Lo and behold, most of the 1st rounders taken after Gibbs at pick 12 were mid to flat out terrible. In this draft, supposedly the guys available in the 40s are just as good (or bad) as the guys available at 16. Is there a guy at 16 that you're really afraid we will miss out on in a trade down? No one seems to think any of the guys available are surefire studs. This is supposed to be a "solid starter" draft, if there are any instant pro-bowlers it will be a huge surprise.

For as much as you hate the Paris pick, the Patriots would be salivating if they could take him at #4 this year. After two years he's easily the best OT from the '23 class and was a way better prospect than any OT in this class. Without the trade down we still would have just taken Paris at #3. Anderson is good, but its not like we missed out on a Garret/Bosa level talent, and great OTs are really hard to find.

Paris hasn’t shown to be a great OT yet. Will Anderson was DRoY and a pro bowler. He’s produced 18 sacks in his first two seasons, and he’s never had a season his team didn’t go to the playoffs.

I’d argue the quality of OTs around the NFL is higher than it’s been in some time.

If Golden falls to our pick 16

and and and and

KM rediscovered his long ball toss then

maybe maybe and maybe

that would be considered instant impact.

Key point, I have some wetlands property in Florida I might part with:)

Interesting.

But that would have to be in the right scheme, right?
Yes. It’s the skill set that impresses. He’s quick and uses his hands well. He’s a good wrap up tackler who can finish when he gets to the QB. He can also be used inside though there are questions if he has the size to hold up. I just don’t see the Cards fit.

In a way that’s the problem. Why move up and surrender picks if you can stay put and get a comparable player? I’m not hearing teams have strong preferences. This is why even the knowledgeable mocks differ so much, teams are sending mixed signals. There may be several trades, but I think most will be short moves to get ahead of a team that may take a prospect the trader wants.

Solid take. I will be super miffed if Monti moves back into the mid-20s for, say, a mere 4th round pick. I'm already on record for not wanting to trade down, but this would just be dumb. You can't trade down if there's not a willing partner, and you shouldn't be willing to trade back for just anything.

Ugh, reminds me of the worst trade back in Cards history in 2003: We traded back from #6 to get #17 and #18, but that wasn't all. Oh no. We also traded BACK in the 2nd round (imagine if that had cost us Boldin?), AND gave New Orleans a 4th round pick for the honor of trading back. Not only were the pick swaps idiotic, but we traded out of the area where we could draft what we really needed, and got Skillet Hands and Pace who, though a good player, wasn't a fit for us. Man, the Saints absolutely robbed us in that one.

I think we missed out on Suggs, right?

For those who don't want the Cards to pass on an ILB or not trade down because of past history doesn't make sense to me. Those deals have nothing to do with this draft. If the Lions decided to not repeat past mistakes, they would never have drafted Calvin Johnson. The Cards might still be running Josh Rosen out there.

If a trade makes sense or Jihaad Campbell is your guy, just take him. Should the Steelers abstain from a 1st round QB because Kenny Pickett didn't work out? Washington had a terrible history of drafting QB's and then hit on Daniels. Drafting Mac Jones didn't stop NE from taking Drake Maye.

I have noproblem with trading back. I’m suggesting it may be hard to find people who want to spend picks to move up. It takes 2 to move.

You should not want to draft an ILB in the first round because the success rate of those picks has been dire, especially compared to the cost for solid veterans (and some all pros!) in free agency.

the scenario I can imagine is if a team falls in love with an offensive skill player in short supply

Tet McMillan or Tyler Warren drops, heck maybe even Jeanty.

Maybe an OT -- assume Campbell and Membou go early, leaving Banks as the one "clean" top OT left (although he would be on the Cards radar at that point too)

If the ILB is your guy and the best player available, you should definitely want to draft him. I get that it's not the ideal position but I'm not passing on my guy because of past success rates. QB has a terrible success rate also.

Certainly not impossible, but how many teams would that apply to

I think TE might be a needle mover for some teams. There are two very good TEs in this years draft. I could see the Chargers moving up to grab Loveland since Harbaugh is very familiar with him. They have the draft capital (10 picks) to make a move up the board.

Loveland may be a move up target. Ravens may be moving on from Andrews; Philly may be moving on from Goddard. Lot of maybe. Get your popcorn. I hope we trade back but we must get at least another third.

I both strongly agree and vehemently disagree. I've argued for years that ILBer is not a never draft in the 1st position; if you can get a Ray Lewis (sans murder) in the 1st, it's a no brainer. OTOH, the guy you draft had better be an immediate and top starter, or else yes, I feel it is a wasted pick better used otherwise.
