Pretty simple, if you could go back in time, should the suns have pulled the trigger on mcgrady for marion/jj?

The team obviously had an amazing year, more amazing than any of us could have imagined. Marion, this series not withstanding, was great all year and played clutch in big moments, such as the entire Dallas series. JJ played with great consistency for most of the year, and most importantly seemed to gain consistent confidence in his game, the primary barrier in his way of becoming a borderline all-star talent.

But all that being said, in my opinion they should have pulled the trigger. The money would have still been enough to sign nash and q. They certainly would not have had as successfull a regular season, and probably would not have gotten past the point they are at now. But in the long run, putting two top ten talents in mcgrady/amare and steve nash playing at his current level (which you would assume would continue for at least 1-2 more years), a suns team with mcgrady and his superstar talent, and more importantly superstar confidence, just strikes me as a team with better potential to win the title.

It's one of those things, where if the suns won the title this year, obviously in retrospect it is a trade they shouldn't have made, but with them on the verge of elimination, and having clearly proven they are just short of that true championship contender level, you have to ask would a team of nash/q/mcgrady/amare/hunter (assume a traditional line up, and more traditional style) be a team that could step up that one level to true championship contender.

I would not change the roster. Get a good draft pick, strengthen the bench with a veteran. The team next year will have playoff experience, adversity experience. Hopefully they will learn to play little bit defense to go with their offense.

It would be nice to have a bench D'Antoni would actually ever play - or, perhaps, it would be nice if D'Antoni would ever play the bench during real game time in the regular season. This is a lovely time to decide Hunter needs to play 30 min a game, or play with Amare. Why even bother with guys 8-12? Save some money!

He has seemed inflexible to the point of pigheadedness on a few issues, and that's one of them.

I would have liked to see it. An offense with Nash, Amare, McGrady, and Q would be a LOT of fun.

Another catch-22.

With TMac in the lineup, Amare might not have developed as fast as he did in this season, in which the whole offense of the team has been focused on Amare-Nash pick-n-roll. But now Amare has arrived, I'd pull the Marion-JoeJ for Tmac + fillers(say Mutombo) trigger if Houston wanted it. We lose this series for these reasons: our Nash-centered system can be handled by a great defense, and they have 3 one-on-one scorers we can't effectively contain in Duncan, Manu and Parker while we have only one in Amare who is still very inexperienced. For this kind of matchups, Tmac would be huge.

The advantage Spurs have is that they can play any style and they practise all of them during the regular season in preparation for the postseason. But we were one-dimentional, partly DA's fault.

No I don't. T-Mac is a playoff choker in the extreme. Without JJ and Marion, we never would have been here.

no no no no no no no....

If JJ were the primary option, as Tmac is, he would put up VERY similar numbers. Not to mention Marion is a top 20 player. (Possibly the best SF.)

no no no no no no no...

If the Suns want to go to a more traditional lineup, just bench Q and start Hunter.

Nash
Johnson
Marion
Amare
Hunter

Richardson
Jackson
(misc bench players)

Are we pretending that we know Johnson is going to get injured? If so, then maybe, if you're talking about this season only. Otherwise, hell no. McGrady's not any better a defender than Marion or Johnson, and that's where the Suns lost to the Spurs. Never mind the fact that McGrady is only one player instead of two, and the Suns' rotation was short enough as it was.

Marion hasn't done anything about the Spurs, but don't forget his performance in Game 6 against the Mavericks. It's unlikely McGrady could have stepped up like that, on both ends of the floor, when the moment came. Come to think of it, we already know that he didn't.

Besides, what would the Suns want with another first-option offensive player anyway?

What is this, ESPN? Come on, usually this is the crap that's spewed on the ESPN boards and in articles posted on Hoopsworld.com.

Funny how we never saw you post anything when we were actually winning playoff games.

I think this is the key Wasted. Richardson could still play big minutes off the bench. It is unlikely we see any changes this off season, so hopefully those changes come from within.

Yeah, this is silly time to bring this up. Marion has had a sensational season though suffered though a poor playoff series against the Spurs, while on the other hand, JJ has been out with a serious injury.

Put everything into perspective. We are somewhere no one gave us a shot of being. Now we have to build on what we learn from these series. Every team that has won titles has also experienced the pain of losing.

An inexperienced Bulls to Detriot in the late 80's
An inexperienced Lakers to Utah/SA in the late 90's
An inexperienced Detriot to NJ just recently.

etc etc

Patience! Yes... we haven't captialized on a great opportunity this time round... why? because we're not good enough.............................. yet.

And no way in hell would i trade Marion and JJ for TMAC. JJ will be as good, if not better than TMAC one day.

Just what the Suns need, more offense, and getting rid of two of their best defenders to get it. I'd be all for it, but I'm a Spurs fan.

I have no problem with this question. I think it's an interesting one. I don't think there's any reason to get upset about it. If JJ leaves without the Phoenix Suns getting adequate compensation (if he leaves that's likely) it will be even more interesting.

I just can't see Amare Stoudemire being happy playing alongside Tracy McGrady. Tracy McGrady also would not have been willing to play the power forward roll like Shawn Marion did. I think next year a lot of that's going to change anyways. At least I think we will see more of a traditional lineup even though we will still see the skill ball. I think Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudemire are going to force more of that. I have no problem with it. The Phoenix Suns did not struggle to score against the best defensive team in the NBA in the playoffs when they had Hunter and Amare in the game together.

Lastly, one of the big contentions with a trade for McGrady last summer was his injury problems. Shawn Marion and JJ are two of the healthiest players in the NBA.

Actually I did post a post, raving about shawn marion's clutch ability (the three in the corner) after beating Dallas in game 3. If you actually read my post, you would have seen how far I went to praise shawn marion, even excusing his performance this series, for everything he's done.

No need to overreact, it's just a question about what team would be better suited to win a championship.

I can't even bring up a valid discussion, even going out of my way to describe how amazing this season was, how great marion and jj were, without getting overreaction?

I agree. This board needs to lighten up a little. You can respond to the post or answer a question without being a jerk about it and/or accusing somebody of being a troll.
