Instead of worrying about bringing in a second rate DE from off the street or waiting to pick up someone else's trash,Graves should be on the phone constantly talking to Carmen Policy and trying to get Tim Couch away from Cleveland. We have the cap room and need at the position to warrant making such a move. He, most likely, would cost about a #2 draft choice even though the Browns would try to hold out for a 1.The situation in Cleveland will not be pretty with Couch sitting and we would be relieving them of a big cap number and a potential divided clubhouse. We could get a QB talented enough to go #1 overall and just getting ready to enter his prime. We could play him this year and let him develop some timing and chemistry with the young WR's.The only knock on Couch has been his abilty to stay healthy for an entire year.I think it would be a great move and make a statement that the Cards are serious about building a winning team and this would put them one BIG step closer.

If he was that good he would have beaten out Kelly Holcomb. I think Couch is overrated.

Cbus:

Terrific idea. Couch may not have become the world-beater he was projected as, coming out of Kentucky, but he'd immediately give the Cards one of the better #2's in the league. (And, someone who could legitimately compete for the starting job in the not-too-distant future.)

I don't know how interested Cleveland is in shopping Couch, though. Assuming he gets over any hurt feelings at losing his starting job, he's great backup insurance for the Browns.

I also don't know how Blake would react to having his backup signed at a--presumably--much higher pricetag. Not saying that's a deal-breaker, just that it might be an issue.

Stay the course

Screw that neither Couch, or Freely are as good as Blake. I say forget about signing a NFL QB and stick with next years draft!

We should be looking for a Vet DL.

I think Cleveland will wait through the season and then see what they can get offseason pick wise. Just a hunch. If the Browns were paying any attention, they know a strong backup is impreative these days. Just ask Philly...which is why I cannot see them dealing Feeley. They should have learned their lesson from last year just how valuable he is.

Same with the Rams. Bulger is going nowhere anytime soon...not only because Warner has been injured the past couple years but I think there may be an uneasy feeling he was lightning in a bottle...even though he played well Monday.

I personally like Couch. I think that he is going to be a very good QB in the NFL. I think that this is a move that would solidify the Cardinal QB position for the next decade.
I think that Cleveland definately has him on the market. With their cap problems they can't afford to pay a backup QB what he is making.
And finally, about making Blake upset. Who really gives a rat's;) ? Despite what some would think ( and I hope he has a good year). Blake is just a jouneyman QB who is a placeholder until a franchise QB comes along. JMHO:D

Danny:

If you're the head coach, you should care about your starting QB's attitude. You don't want your supposed team leader angry at management, justified or not. You do want him thinking that this is his team, and that he's the guy. For now, at least.

Like I said, I don't know how Jeff Blake would react. He's a pro, and he knows how business is done in the NFL. He might react to Couch's contract like that of a high-round rookie's, and shrug it off. If the Cards go down this road, though, someone will probably want to sit down with Blake and get him on board in advance. That's all I'm sayin'.

Not a big Couch fan - besides he ain't going nowhere until after the season and even then - if Blake stinks and if Josh has been shown to not to be ready, I wouldn't give up much for this guy with his contract. Calssic underachiever/mediocre QB - eventually this team is gonna need a stud at QB and not just guys to fill the gap.

That and the fact that St.Claire will get Warner killed again this year.

As far as Couch, I say no. All I can think of when I see him is when he was crying in the locker after the fans booed him.

Yeah, and I don't want a player who allowed his Playmate girlfriend to be stolen by Cade McNown, either. :)

Honestly, Couch isn't that great a QB. I didn't think he was a franchise QB then, and I don't think he's one now. He's no better than Jeff Blake. We'll draft someone next season if McCown doesn't work out. We're not in a position to win until 2006 anyway.

I think you guys are being too hard on Couch. He came in with an expansion team, for crying out loud(no pun intended),and had them in the playoffs last year.To say the reason you don't want him because he couldn't beat out Holcombe is wrong.Feeley couldn't beat out KOy Detmer for 2nd string and he's ok? Holcombe has been in Bruce Arians(sp?) system for years in Indy and now in Cleveland.Couch was in it for 1 year.I'm not saying Couch is the best QB in the league, but to say Blake is just as good is utter nonsense.I agree,Cleveland probably won't trade him this year. But everybody has their price.

Who has the best WR corps in football? IMO, one through five, it's Cleveland. Northcutt, Davis, Morgan, Kevin Johnson, and one more whose name escapes me.

And with all that WR wealth, Couch is afraid to do anything but dink dump-off passes.

While I don't knoiw about the best WR copr in football - I agree Couch has had a ton of talent there and Skkorp is right - the guy just dumps the ball off. Holcolmb - a journeyman back up to this point can find those guys - Couch so far is just another 1st pick gone awry - I don't think he's a bust - but his upside is big enough to bring him in here.

I totally agree. The guy is so terrified of making a mistake that he misses opportunities to make plays.

For the record, I like Couch.

Iposting that here not because I want to see him signed this season, but next. And, I don't think it's that much of a long shot for it to happen. But, this year signing Couch would hurt the team rather than help it--do we really want Blake embroiled ina QB controversy? I don't--not this late in the pre-season.

But, I do think Couch is good QB and would help this team in both the long and short run.

I agree that he is worth a look. He is still very young and I believe he still has some upside. He would jump a head of McCown in my opinion.

My biggest knock on Graves is that a fourth QB wasn't brought to compete for a position even if it were just for the 3rd spot.

Yeah - I can agree there - but sometimes you gotta roll the dice with your kids - I know this is gonna sound co9mpletely oxymoronic - but I'm a moron so here it goes - QBs do seem to come out of nowhere. I mean when Bledsoe went down everyone thought the Pats season was over - same with Blake in NO - Soemtimes guys just have to be thrown to the fire and then wham - even if they haven't looked good in preseason - they could be NFL starters. I think this team is far away from competing right now and as such desperately wanted Leftwhich - but if they've got this faith in Josh - you gotta stick with it and if Blake goes down see what you got.

Yeah, but then he stole Heather Kozar back, so at least we know he's no quitter.

If we did trade for Couch wouldn't we have to pay his $6 million
salary? If so, screw that! Blake is the guy this year. If we need a #2 then Feeley or an equivalent is a better strategy IMO.

Back up QB-Starting Salary. Why would we want that? The Browns have a way better receiving corps than we do, and Couch could not keep his job. Put him on the Cards and get a disaster.

If not Couch someone, we need to sign someone soon so he can have a chance at learning the system. If we don't get anyone in the next couple of weeks it will just be sink or swim with McCown. But, looking at the bright side, we could draft Eli Manning #1 next year. And for the record I would take Couch over Blake.
