Another hard one, but the easy answer is Ed Wood or Uwe Boll. But I'm going to go out on a controversial limb here and say:

John Waters

I just don't like anything he does and one of his mainstream movies is my least favorite movie of all time, Serial Mom. He seems to do the gross-out thing simply because he can, and I just don't find it entertaining.

You know, I could have gone all day without someone mentioning Armageddon...

Miss Stamper? [salutes Grace] Colonel Willie Sharp, United States Air Force, ma'am. Requesting permission to shake the hand of the daughter of the bravest man I've ever met.

I heard it was based on a true story. It happened before, it will happen again. It's just a question of when.

And Armageddon tired of telling people to get off my lawn.

Definitely have to ask why on this one.

The opening caveat is that I am not a fan of big, flashy, effects-driven action pictures with predictable storylines and cheap dramatics.

Titanic was a cloying, unbelievably smarmy turd.
Avatar was painfully juvenile to me.

The Abyss is probably my favorite of his efforts, and even that he nearly ruined.

Furthermore, he appears to be a self-important twit.

Terminator 2? Aliens?

If anything, he is an FX pioneer and has done some amazing work. Avatar was terribly written, as was Titanic, but there is very little to compare to the spectacle of it all. Your caveat invalidates this, though.

The reason that I wouldn't put him as overrated is that his direction has pushed the boundaries of movie-making not once, but at least three times, and films after him by any director have benefited from him.

what about Terminator/Terminator 2/Aliens?!

I understand people who don't like Avatar/Titanic... i disagree vehemently with them... but understand.

But Terminator/T2/Aliens are just "big, flashy, predictable..." those movies are complete sci fi classics. three of the best movies in the 30 years.

Pretty much this. What he did with Titanic was quite a spectacle, but what he did with Avatar was nothing short of spectacular. Yes, the story was nothing new, but what he did technologically was this generations Star Wars.

Yeah like I said, I don't really go for those movies anyway so...no, to me Terminator/T2/Aliens are not three of the best movies in the 30 years [sic].
I am more impressed with a director's ability to tell an interesting story and help elicit acting performances that almost make me forget the performers are acting, than technological wizardry.

I just know that for me, if Cameron is directing, I can give it a miss.

Yeah, stayed out of the "overrated" thread altogether.

I liked his Titanic story. It was a unique take on story that had been told plenty of times before either on film or TV.
