I guess I am one of the few people who really hopes we sign Emmitt Smith. I think a two year deal would be outstanding for the Cardinals.

Yes, I believe he should start over Shipp. Shipp signed a four year deal, and would have two years to start after Emmitt was gone. He could still see significant time as a change of pace back.

The Steelers, Broncos, and Raiders all used more than one running back to great effect. Running the football is what wins in this league.

What does Emmitt bring to this team?

#1 A change of philosophy. While the Cardinals may want Smith as window dressing....Emmitt will come here to win. He is notorious for being the first in the weight room, the first to practice, and an avid studier of film. He will be respected in the locker room, both as a winner...a hall of famer...and an outstanding character guy. He is a leader on a team with little veteran leadership right now (especially on the offensive side of the ball).

#2 People will talk about the Cardinals. Let's say Emmitt is a PR move....GREAT!!! Let's fill Sun Devil Stadium. Let's get people cheering the Cardinals. Let's have a home field advantage. Let's get on Monday Night Football.

#3 You can argue all you want about whether or not Marcel Shipp is the better running back right now....but what you can't argue is that Emmitt is better at all the little things. He is one of the best at picking up blitzes in the league. Signing Emmitt makes our pass blocking better. It gives Marcel a chance to see how it should be done, and frankly his blitz pickup was average at best last year.

#4 It helps our receivers. Again, no slight to Marcel Shipp, but people will scheme around stopping Emmitt. It's hard to sit in zone all game when you are looking at a hall of fame running back.

As to some of the arguements I have seen against bringing in Smith, I have to laugh.

First off, making the blanket statement that Shipp is better than Emmitt Smith reeks of homerism. I mean absolutely reeks. You are talking about comparing a guy who had a nice half a season against a hall of fame back.

The funniest to me was the comment that it will send the wrong message to the Cardinals players. Which message is that? The "we want to win" message? Do you honestly believe that ANY Cardinals player wouldn't want to play with Emmitt Smith?

Another comment I saw was that Emmitt would be a cancer in the locker room? Based on what??? Oh I guess because Emmitt Smith would never accept losing, would challenge those around him, and lead by example...if that is indeed a "cancer" then infect this whole frackin' team because they need it.

Bring in Emmitt...Bring in the runner, the leader, the teacher, and the winner. Finally, give us a true winner in town.

Most people know my well documented and opinionated stance on this issue.

Let me ask you a question what in your opinion makes Emmitt a winner? Is it because he was on teams that arguable on defense and offense had some of the best talent in NFL history and won 3 Superbowls??

Because if thats the case what makes Emmitt the individual a winner when this is a team sport? Do you consider Duane Starks a winner? How about Dexter jackson?

Your comment that because we think Shipp is better is from left field as well. You are looking at Emmitt through rose colored glasses and seeing what he has done over a 12 year career thus wanting him just because he is Emmitt. The Emmitt you want is not the Emmitt that will be signed while Emmitt the person is and always will be a HOFer. Emmitt the athlete as he stands right now is nothing more than an average RB on the downside of his career.

If you look at stats, physical stature, explosion to the hole, overall power and speed then yes as of right now Shipp is a better RB. But in no way could you even hold him in the same breath as Emmitt over a career I understand that. But as of today Shipp IS THE MORE TALENTED RB! I will agree howevor that Emmitt is a far superior blocker but after a whole traing camp as the starter Shipp would be loads better because that is a skill that can be coached!

You ask what do I base my fact that Emmitt could be a cancer in the locker room? I base that because he has been a cancer in Dallas the last two years. He has beeen bitter and openly expressed dissapointment over his lack of carries to younger more talented guys. The Cowboys seen that Emmitt is not the same and gave him less carries because of it. The guy has complained and in the event Shipp earns the starting nod he would do the same here. If you dont thin so you are kidding yourself!

The Broncos only used more than one RB to great affect because of injury. Portis was there primary carrier last year after Davis went down. It was not even close to a RB by committee. The only one who really exemplifies that is the Raiders but most schools of thought are that a RB will get better as the game goes on with more carries and the RB by committee is rarely succesful and usually makes one or both players bitter whether its expressed or not!

Sorry we just dont need him!

As long as we don't break the bank on him, I am starting to warm up to him, for many of the reasons Chris mentioned.

I have no problem with Emmitt, there is no doubt that he is a professional with a great attitude that should help both on the field and in the locker room. At least, I don't think you will find him sitting off by himself like DB did.

I just feel like we have the space, and it's not like he will be on the books for the next 8 years.

He will retire soon enough, and we will get that money back in time to give someone else.

My 2 Cents:

I have no problem bringing in Emmitt. What I do have a problem with is bringing in Emmitt and annoiting him the starter without any competition.

Sorry But while I was a Jake supporter I still never understood why there was never any real competition to push Jake into being a better QB.

To just hand the reins to Emmitt in my mind is wrong. Let him compete in training camp and if he is the better back right now then Shipp then give him the starting role. If he isnt the better back at this point in his career then give it to Shipp.

It allways seems rediculous to me to immediatly name starters before training camp begins. Now do some people have the edge on the starting role, of course they do, but if they arent pushed are they going to be the best starter they can be??

Smith said in his press conf. that he does have to win the job. Coach Mac has already said the he will have to earn the starting job. If the season stared today and we signed Smith I would make him the starter, but since it hasn't Shipp and Smith with battle for the starter position. This should be a nice battle to watch in Tuson. IMO Smith will have the upper hand, but you know if Shipp didn't like having Smith their we would have heard it from him by now. You know Coach Mac has kept him in the loop so we will see when the season starts.

Signing Smith can do nothing but help this franchise. He brings things that can't be measured: respect, attitude, professionalism. I think his signing would be a huge boost to the organization.

I have to agree that it "COULD" be a very good move. And I am all for it, as long as Shipp gets his fair shot at the starting job, and we make sure we give him a descent amount of carries per game. Shipp looks like hes the future and as much as he could learn from smith he still needs some solid touches a game...

My only other concern is he is goin to cost around 3 mill per season, that is alittle much but as long as it aint any higher i guess I could go for it...

Last year, Emmitt averaged 3.8 YPC.
Last year, Marcell averaged 4.8 YPC.

Leadership? Did anyone else see HBO's coverage of cowgirl training camp? Emmitt laying on his hotel room bed playing computer golf, and taking calls from the front desk from "some relatives" trying to get in to his room while the cameras were rolling.

Emmitt deciding HE would drive the team bus to the practice feild.
Emmitt catching hell from an assistant coach for playing dominoes in the clubhouse with some young players, when they were supposed to be in meetings.

His most important reasons for choosing a new team.
1) winning
2) carries
3) money

What we have to offer.
1) money
2) carries
3) winning

What, a first round bust that we'd like to unload, a promising undrafted FA who signed a 4 year deal, a late round back who has no carries and another undrafted back who saw very little playing time.

TJ is all but gone. Hopefully we don't show our hand and can trade him around draft time as opposed to dropping him June 1 and getting zero.

Shipp had a good half year. But so did Pittman and Hearst and ....

Scooby-doo won't survive camp cuts this year.

Anderson is hanging by a thread.

Scobey will make this team and Im willing to bet he will beat out Anderson for #2 if Emmitt does not sign here. Im assuming you have not watched this guy play at all when you make a statement as such?
