I'm not sure that a popcorn movie that was not praised for acting is overrated.

Exactly.

It won an Oscar, but not for acting. :D

It won for "Best Effects, Visual Effects." Was also nominated for "Best Sound."

That's a stretch by someone who wrote the page. I just re-watched that movie. It was neither said nor implied. The only thing that was said is that there race goes from planet to planet in search of resources.

Sorry Daren... You need to pay more attention when watching.... :D

President Whitmore: "I saw... its thoughts. I saw what they're planning to do. They're like locusts. They're moving from planet to planet... their whole civilization. After they've consumed every natural resource they move on... and we're next. Nuke 'em. Let's nuke the bastards.

Yes that was my impression was that it was their entire race. Be no survivors whatsoever

Maybe it's too literal. Maybe yes, their whole civilization is moving from planet to planet searching for resources, but perhaps not just earth at the same time -- so half the civilization is somewhere else doing the same thing...

That certainly could mean what you say but it could also mean their whole civilization does this, goes from planet to planet, but not necessarily all together? As in they could have lots of mother ships attacking lots of planets all over the place.

It does somewhat make sense the spaceship they fly was the Roswell one they came looking for. So they presumably have scout ships like that one, and then forces come in behind and take over. Doesn't mean for sure they literally bring everyone with them.

I mean someone has to stay home and feed the cats and dogs right?

:D

I can see how that would be interpreted that way. However, if I an alien race is so smart that they could travel millions upon million of light years...they would be smart enough not to put all their eggs in one basket. I took that to mean that is what their civilization does not that the entire civilization was sent to earth.

There is nothing that says their entire race was sent to the Planet earth. They could have easily been exploring multiple potential planets.

For example, in one of the NASA specials I watched, they said that even the human race would need to send multiple humans to potential planets to ensure the maximum chance of finding a new home. Surely an Alien race millions of years more advanced than ours figured that out.

I think you give them too much credit after all they used the same OS as Apple.

i think we're thinking WAYYYYYYYYYY too much about a movie where we can somehow upload a virus from our computers to their systems (which apparently are completely compatible) and in which the president flies a plane and an alcoholic pilot ulitmately destroy one of the biggest ships.

No doubt.

I'd like to see the sequel either way. There were so many WTF scenes in that movie that to enjoy it, you just have to suspend reality anyways. Once done, it is thoroughly enjoyable.

All valid points. However, assuming that math is the universal language of the universe, you could conceivably infect any known computer system. Either that or they just forgot to patch their OS for the latest vulnerability. ;)

Uhhhhhh.... I've read that quote over and over, and while what you suggest might seem possible, it seems very implausible.

More implausible than a highly intelligent race putting all their eggs in one basket (OS problems aside..LOL)? I don't think so. Besides...using the example above our Civilization has progressed and had many accomplishments. It doesn't mean that we all took part in those advancements or accomplishments.

Huh? Implausible doesn't seem like the word to describe this, considering we're talking about a movie about aliens trying to destroy the world.

i DID NOT say you took the toy
i did not SAY you took the toy
i did not say you TOOK the toy
i did not say you took the TOY
I did not say you took the toy
i did not say YOU took the toy

The same sentence can be read six different ways.

Let me restate..... If a person (such as myself) can get by Darth Vader being Luke's dad after Kenobi telling Luke that Vader had betrayed and murdered his father, then I can buy the Independence Day thing. It isn't that big of a deal in the land of movies.

However.... it remains pretty clear what was meant in the first one.... regardless of what you apologists say.... :D

Who is apologizing? It's pretty cool. The human race made it to the moon. I didn't realize the entire human race fit in that little pod.

if you guys are nitpicking this you must have hated the new ninja turtles and its several massive plot holes.

Also, that ending scene. Like a human could hold on and survive. So far fetched but still fun :)

True. However, I feel sorry for anybody stuck in a capsule with my grandmother on my mom's side. I heard car rides with here were brutal enough.
