True. However, I feel sorry for anybody stuck in a capsule with my grandmother on my mom's side. I heard car rides with her were brutal enough.

It's been quite awhile since I've seen the film, but my memory is that their entire civilization was on the mother ship. Am I wrong about that? If I'm right, it kinda screws up the reason for the sequel, I would think....
i think we're thinking WAYYYYYYYYYY too much about a movie where we can somehow upload a virus from our computers to their systems (which apparently are completely compatible)
In the original shoot, Russell flies his crop-dusting biplane with a sidewinder missile TIED to it. Thank God they reshot the ending to what we ended up with.and in which the president flies a plane and an alcoholic pilot ulitmately destroy one of the biggest ships.
Through WiFi no less and assuming that a species capable of transversing the universe never thought of a firewall.

I guess I am in the minority of looking forward to a sequel. It's completely realistic that if one of your alien ships went missing after trying to takeover earth that you would send more ships. I think it would be stupid to think that wouldn't happen.
So from a storyline perspective it was completely teed up for a sequel and always has been IMO.
Having said that, I don't want some generic sequel for the sake of pulling in the big buck. That is probably what will happen but damn...the first movie was cool when it came out. They will probably ruin it but man...I hope not.
oops...guess that was covered....should have read the entire thread,lol........
I am looking forward to this as well,...however, the original story actually killed off the possibility....when Mr President was mind melded with the alien, he learned lots about them,....including that their entire civilization travels from planet to planet feeding off of the natural resources..keyword there being..."Entire"..... which means fresh Prince and the Fly killed them all with that nuke delivery.
would have been better perhaps to focus on what aliens may have survived the hundreds of ship crashes after power loss,...then gathered together and went under ground to lick their wounds for a while.
Yes it does say the entire civilization moves from planet to planet but that doesn't mean that the entire civilization visits one planet at a time. That can easily be interpreted a different way.
In fact, if your millions of years more advanced that us Earthlings...something tells me strategically you would be smart enough not to bet your entire civilization on one planet. Even us lowly evolved humans get that.
Arrogance perhaps? They obviously saw our species as irrelevant and no threat.
either way...nobody is ever truly dead in Hollywood....I am curious to see what they came up with.
if its twenty years later,....shouldn't captain hiller be president?? He and his stripper first lady rocking the new white house............
Hey the first lady is allowed to change a room in the White House. Whose to say it doesn't contain a poll, mirror ball, lots of lights and a sweet sound system.
this is still coming out july 3rd?
Here's How Will Smith's Character Died In Independence Day: Resurgence Universe
http://comicbook.com/2015/12/13/heres-how-will-smiths-character-died-in-independence-day-resurge/
Along with the first trailer, 20th Century Fox has launched a viral site for Independence Day: Resurgence.
The "documentary"-style look at the first film (here, the War of 1996) gives background for the upcoming movie, and helps to bridge the nearly 20-year gap between the release of Independence Day and the release of its forthcoming sequel.
Centered around the "War of 1996," it gives clues as to what happened to beloved characters from the first movie...including the death of Will Smith's character, Colonel Steven Hiller.
According to a timeline found on the viral site, "While test piloting the ESD's first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller's valor in the War of '96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy's defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and his son Dylan."'
Having died in 2007 seemingly precludes Smith from making even a cameo appearance in the new film.
Dylan, of course, is expected to be a character in the new film.
This is ridiculously silly.
