Installing second hard drive

Please help!

I am installing a second hard drive and I'm having some trouble.

I have my original drive set to master and the new one set to slave.

They are on the same cable with the master at the end (black plug) and the slave plugged in the middle (grey plug). If that makes any sense.

When I start my computer, I can see it recognizes that it is there but when windows comes up and I open "my computer" I don't see the new drive.

If I go to "system properties->device manager" I can see two hard drives but one of them has no drive letter assignment.

I really don't know what I'm missing here please help.

I also checked my bios settings and the new HD is there as secondary. How do i get windows to recognize the drive?

Are you using XP?

If so, go to Programs > Administrative Tools > Disk Management...

You should be able to see it there, and name it.

One reason you may not be seeing it is that you don't have it formatted, but I don't know if you've done that or not.

I'm using win98. I haven't formatted the drive just took it out of the bag and hooked it up.

Might need to format it in order to see it.

Thanks for your help. I used FDisk then formatted the drive. Now its working fine

Another computer problem solved by C-Mike, the resident expert. And he did it without checking with his boss, Whitey.
