Unless you want to pull a straight-up hardball stick-it-to-ya negotiation, you have to have room to negotiate upwards on what you offer.
I think the perception is that this deal should have been an easy one. Schefter has been dumbfounded by the Cardinals approach and has repeatedly said they just need to get this deal done. Not at any price but I think it's been implied that Warner wasn't going to be a true hard-ass about the money until the offer was a lot lower than what he thought and that offer was, apparently, non-negotiable.

Again, if you enter a negotiation with no flexibility, you're setting yourself up to be a real hard ass in that negotiation.
I agree but if it was 10 on one side and 16 on the other, how did they not get to 13 and avoid all of this? I've had the impression that Warner's side has been a lot more flexible in tone than the Cardinals. Seems like the Cardinals have been at 10 and "we're not budging" from the very beginning.

Warner's had a range and has stated that they were still trying to really establish his market value.

Actually, all I've gotten from the Warner camp is a lot of confusion. 'I want compensated for years past' and 'we're not looking to get paid for past performance'. 'All I'm looking for is fair market value' and 'I'm not sure how much I'm worth'. You know, I think the Cards brought him a damn good offer, and he knew it. I think he wants to maximize his money and he is royally upset that the Cards don't just thank him and give him whatever he wants. That's the sense I get.

Actually, I don't think this looks all that bad for the Cardinals FO.

If the Niners go through all of this hooplah and don't come up with a contract that is better than the offers the Cards have presented Warner, they are the ones that look foolish. It starts to feel like the Niners are committed to carrying this show through, and may get stuck with a very large, hard to manage deal on a QB that has to learn another new system.

I am proud of Warner and what he did for us, but all I can think is, he failed to do it for us for 3 years before he came through... and helped us win 9.

Yea and it has nothing to do with Warner's strong arm, accuracy, quick release and decision making ability. Without Warner, you guys lose the two 49ers games, real talk. Warner had contant pressure in his face the 1st game in SF but he kept making play after play to kill us. Leinart would've never made those same plays Warner did against the 49ers.

First, it is widely known through out the league that Warner doesn't have a strong arm. Secondly, Saying Leinart could not make those plays is pure speculation and not worth even arguing.

FYI...a cut and paste from the 49ers message board...appears a radio station in the bay area is saying the Cardinals upped their offer...take it for what it is worth! cut and paste starts now:

Just heard on KBNR that Cards bumped up their off to Warner to 2yr $23mil, no word on any decision yet.

if warner signs I hope has fun with no wr's to throw ball to and a pretty bad oline..... pretty sad that the nfl is all about the money now :(

If Warner signs signs somewhere else I want blame him. He did his job here. If we are not offering him somewhere near what another team will offer him then shame on us not shame on Kurt. He want be the first very good player to walk out of here and want be the last. We will continue with the tag of the past 50 years of being cheap and we might add not very smart to that but that has also been part of our legacy. What ever is going to happen I just hope it happens soon so we can move on down the road. I am a die-hard Kurt Warner fan both as a football player but also as a good human being. I am also a life time Cardinal fan dating back to 1945. I will continue to be a Cardinal fan with once again a deeply saddened one. If Kurt leaves I will lay my prediction on the table now for the coming season as 8/8. This all seems so surreal to me that I still think in my heart of hearts he will be back. Even the Cardinals must realize just how important this guy is to this team coming off the season we just had?????
