MUCH better than Iron Man 2 and very close to surpassing 1, simply because the "demons" of Tony Stark are much more interesting than a man in an iron suit blowing everything up. Also like the fact that the main villain(s) aren't other guys in iron suits (which was my main problem with Iron Man 2).

Only confusion is that the ending makes it look like he gave up being Iron Man, what with getting his power supply removed and all his suits being destroyed. We know it's just a "reboot", but it still seemed very... final. RDJ has gone on record that this will be the last Iron Man movie, but of course he'll be back for Avengers 2.

Tony Stark hasn't had the chest implant in the comic books for a long time. He underwent a heart transplant.

RDJ isn't contracted to do another Iron Man OR another Avengers at this time.

Iron Man, you are correct. But not sure where you get your information about Avengers. Seems bad business if they didn't sign the actors to some kind of multi-picture deal for Avengers.

Don't know about the contract, but he's made it relatively clear in interviews that he will do the Avengers 2

FWIW, my wife does not like superhero movies in general, but she is highly entertained by RDJ's take on Iron Man.

I really enjoyed the fact that this movie was a bit of a "scaling back" of the story arc for Stark, a getting back to basics if you will, something I liked about The Amazing Spiderman too by the way. I've grown tired of "sequelitis"; where filmmakers feel compelled to make the next in a franchise biggerer, and betterer than the last. No way Iron Man 3 could have lived up to the action in The Avengers, and Iron Man 2 was already a case of "too much stuff, not enough time".

It was a bit of a decompression in the Iron Man story, and it allowed for some stellar character development...in my opinion at least.

I suppose there are some that haven't seen this yet, so I'll continue the use of spoiler tags.

This concerns the "big reveal" plot twist in the film, so read at your own risk!
I'm serious, I won't accept any blame for ruining the movie for you if you haven't seen it yet!
Fanboys seem to be in a tizzy over how the movie handled the Mandarin.

I LOVED the Mandarin twist. Making The Mandarin a figurehead to explain, what amounts to, industrial accidents as terrorist attacks was a genius move.

I really liked the social commentary regarding media manipulation that goes with it, whether it was intended or not.

I'm a comic book guy, and I felt like (after viewing it) it was the best way to play it, unless they wanted to go with a Iron Man vs. Al-Qaeda scenario. That might of been too much considering the Bush-like President already turning War Machine into a physical embodiment of the Patriot Act.

I thought it was a great twist. Mandarin was a super cheesy villian.

I agree that the Mandarin is a cheesy villain, even though his use of the ten-rings in the comics is actually explained as alien technology, not magic.

Coming up with an appropriate big-bad-guy for Stark to face in this film was going to be difficult, as the list of Iron Man's nemesises is short on interesting characters; The Mandarin (too chesseball), Dr. Doom (been done, and would need a reboot), and pretty much just a bunch of other guys in armored suits.

Of course, if they decide to continue the franchise, a bunch of guys in armored suits would totally be the way to go with the next one. With all the pieces of the various Iron Man suits laying around after the final battle, it would totally justify an Armored Wars storyline.

"They stole his technology, now it's total war!"

That said, having a bunch of superheated soldiers was pretty cheeseball...but hey, it's a comic book movie so I rolled with it.
