Fanboys seem to be in a tizzy over how the movie handled the Mandarin.
I LOVED the Mandarin twist. Making The Mandarin a figurehead to explain, what amounts to, industrial accidents as terrorist attacks was a genius move.
I really liked the social commentary regarding media manipulation that goes with it, whether it was intended or not.
I'm a comic book guy, and I felt like (after viewing it) it was the best way to play it, unless they wanted to go with a Iron Man vs. Al-Qaeda scenario. That might of been too much considering the Bush-like President already turning War Machine into a physical embodiment of the Patriot Act.
I thought it was a great twist. Mandarin was a super cheesy villian.
I agree that the Mandarin is a cheesy villain, even though his use of the ten-rings in the comics is actually explained as alien technology, not magic.
Coming up with an appropriate big-bad-guy for Stark to face in this film was going to be difficult, as the list of Iron Man's nemesises is short on interesting characters; The Mandarin (too chesseball), Dr. Doom (been done, and would need a reboot), and pretty much just a bunch of other guys in armored suits.
Of course, if they decide to continue the franchise, a bunch of guys in armored suits would totally be the way to go with the next one. With all the pieces of the various Iron Man suits laying around after the final battle, it would totally justify an Armored Wars storyline.
"They stole his technology, now it's total war!"
That said, having a bunch of superheated soldiers was pretty cheeseball...but hey, it's a comic book movie so I rolled with it.
