The Mavs getting bounced in the first is more hope than prognostication.
They Both could get bounced and not play the Suns and that is what I would like. I am a Suns fan. Not an NBA fan. I love the game but I love my team first. I want to see THEM not "ME" or "US" win. I love the Suns but last time I checked they were not paying my bills.

BUt this "HOMERISM" got you to put in your 2 cents. Dont get so mad
jeeze its only a message board!

It's cool, I also get incredibly frustrated with Mavs fan who say that Denver is going to beat Phoenix if they meet in the first round because they won in a blowout earlier this season. It's not likely to happen yet homers seem to believe because that matchup works into their teams advantage it will. I only joked about it in a sarcastic manner but if the Suns don't make it to the second round i'll be shocked (and a little disappointed).

But I still don't agree with the Nowitzki overated comment. The highest PER in the NBA is nothing to take lightly, the formula is fairly well thought out. Unfortunately people like Hollinger also say he's in a different class than Nash certainly make it seem like he's overated by the entire media which isn't the case.

Dirk is a great player. But he is a wuss. And by that I mean is he lets so much extra stuff get to him like refs, a foul, whatever. He complains about literally everything (not just a Dirk thing, an NBA thing as a whole) but I think more then most he lets it all get to him.

And he settles for his fadeaway jumper and outside shots way too easily. This was apparent yesterday.

No worries mate. So let me get this right you are a Nuggets fan? Just trying to figure out what team you pull for. The Homer will always look at a matchup and find reasons they are going to win. It makes the sporting world go round for some folks. Sad. It takes a realist to look at a team and say "I dont want anything to do with them" I dont want the Suns to play the Lakers in the first for sure! I think they might lose!

The Dirk Comment WAS a bit out of bounds, I concede that. I must say though he is the most overrated Star in the League. WHEW! Ok I feel better.

Vince Carter is numero uno on my list, with Marbury pulling a close second.

Yes, they still are the best in the league and will give us the biggest challenge. San Antonio and Detroit will also be tough, but I'm not really scared of any other team at this point. I think we would have a good chance to beat all three. Hopefully no injuries this time though.

no im not afraid of the mavs, we have proven we can beat them 3 times (once they won with a buzzer beater) and won 2. its really only Utah and San Anotonio that scare me. SA is a veteran team who has won the championship before unlike dallas. I think if we get past san antonio we will have enough confidence to beat dallas in a series and advance to the finals. in the finals im worried more about detroit than miami/cleveland. They play good defense and have some major threats with scoring/rebounding, not to mention they are very deep.

Topics like "fearing some team" are a bit problematic. Respect is not the same as fear. I don't think the Suns fear anyone, nore should they.

"Fear" comes from being totally outclassed and the Suns feel they can match up with anyone, although playing their A game is essential.

Nope, I'm a Mavericks fan (and Nash is my favorite player, to watch anyway). I think the least ideal matchup for the Mavs would be the Warriors, but i'm not really scared of them winning a seven game series. Anything in the first round i'm confident in winning, Housten and Utah is where I start contemplating the possibility of being knocked out.

I just don't see Dirk being overated either, he's improved his stats every year he's been in the league. He's on the same level as Nash as to what he does for Dallas (efficiency, whereas Nash is simply the entire offenses catalyst) and that's why he's in the MVP argument. Not to mention the rare skills set, if you can find one other seven foot shooter the quality of Dirk then maybe you can call him overated, but right now he's one of a kind.

The most overated player is definitely Vince Carter. As a Canadian I have followed the Rators closely and I can honestly say he is an unmotivated sack of crap when playing for a bad team. He openly admitted to not playing to his potential before being traded. Not to mention his streaky scoring, being injury prone (only when his teams losing, take note), and selfishness. He was just a good dunker who got hot from the floor on occassion but in the long run I'm glad he's out of Toronto, despite being given away by a boneheaded GM (if you don't recall it was VC for Eric Williams, Aaron Williams, and Alonzo Mourning who refused to play for Toronto). Bryan Colangelo for GM of the year!

You make a strong case here friend. I must concede. Dirk has no equal.
Does he deserve the MVP though? Are we just going to hand it off to him and call it a day? I didnt have doubts untill the game in Dallas. Dirk lost his cool and didnt help his team. On the flip side, Nash rips off 10 points including a game tying shot when they were down by 16? Not to say hand it over to Nash either. Amare could be the MVP on the team too. Right?

Am I scared of the Mavs? Well, I don't play for the Suns. If I did play for the Suns, I wouldn't be afraid.

As a fan, any team making the playoffs causing me concern. Thus the reason that my wife wants to kill herself when the playoffs start - I am a mess.

I wouldn't be outraged if Nash won the third straight MVP, he's proven he can will his team to wins when needed. Dirk has done the same (not directly against Phoenix as of late obviously) but he did hit the game winner for our first W against you guys and has taken over fourth quarters when needed throughout the season as a whole. They both have and very few superstars can do that on a regular basis.

I know most Suns fans don't watch many Mavericks games but Dirk does become clutch when they need him to be, and he showed it in the playoffs last year in all three series leading up to the finals (where he finally burnt out). I think Nash has had a better stretch of games to close the season and that can definitely have an impact on the voting. In conclusion the MVP doesn't mean much to either guy and rightfully so, I just want to see a WCF between their teams for the one thing that does matter.

the big roadblock in front of us is still the Spurs because a) there is no Dallas series if we can't beat them and b) although we handled them well in our last game, we still haven't shown the ability to beat them in the playoffs.

So as far as that goes, I think the Spurs still have a minute advantage on us, which is mostly mental and experience based while I think a matchup with Dallas is a complete toss-up, with maybe the most minute advantage going to us because for some reason, with a healthy team, I just can't see Nash losing to the Mavs do to a superior mental edge.
I don't get it. just a few days ago you were singing a totally different tune. I guess things can change in a heartbeat. I'm sure a lot can happen over a 7 game series as well.

I don't think either team is afraid of one another. Given the comments after the game by the phoenix players.......they seemed to be very respectful and humble about the victory. Marion did say he thought he played well at both ends, but also conceded that dirk had a bad game. The players also talked about the huge journey that is ahead for both teams in light of the fact that fans are just automatically thinking these two will meet. I think the suns are a great team and will give dallas problems if they play in the WCF. I would say the same thing about the spurs. As a mavs fan i dislike the spurs more than any other team. They are also the team i fear the most in the WC. Obvioulsy if the suns beat the spurs.....that will change.

whats to dislike about the Spurs? Tim Duncan is a great player. He whines a bit but what skill, what a great mind. So what is not to like? Is it the mutant they have at point guard? Or the bane of the NBA Manu Ginobli? The Vlade Divac for the next generation.
is it the fact that after every time a foul is called on them they whine and argue as if they have some leverage to negotiate? Or is it coach Popovic and the Battlefield he is using for a face?

....oh yeah I hate em too. Thanks for reminding me.

how could I do that if he is a 2 time MVP?

"Overrated star" really has no place on a guy that has two of those bronze trophies they give out.

mmnnn. gives me Ideas for another post.

exactly. you say that dirk is overrated because he falters down the stretch. well nash has two mvp trophies with two falters down the stretch. If dirk is overrated.....nash comes in a close 2nd. no doubt nash is the mvp of the suns. He's just not clearly the mvp of the league this year. I'm not saying dirk is cleary the mvp either. I'm just saying it appears that dirk will win and nash will finish 2nd. Remember, nash was in dirk's position just two years ago.

the spurs are the mavs biggest rival at the end of the day. The media has made the suns/mavs big this year. But i think after last season there is a lot of bitterness between the spurs and mavs. I think the two teams are very close as well. If the suns beat the spurs in the playoffs.....they will surely be capable of doing the same to dallas.

Agreed. He has not. It baffles me when people say that. The closest thing to faultering would have been his first season here and that really wasn't the case either. His numbers don't support him getting tired or faultering come playoff time. I know people have always worried about it but I say don't until it actually happens.

First year he was also behind KJ and Jason Kidd later on correct?

I think SteelDog is referring to the 04-05 season, Nash's first season back with the team.

You are right though when he was drafted he ended up being on a team that had both KJ and Kidd. Talk about some great PG's!

When has Nash faltered down the stretch?

In Dallas during the playoffs which is probably why Cuban didn't want to resign him, Bibby owned him and according to that Kings loss... still does. I think a lot of the media buzz is that Nash is carrying the Suns franchise on 30+ year old legs (and back) so when the playoffs start he just might become burnt out. That is faltering down the stretch. We'll see if it happens.

When does Dirk falter down the stretch? http://www.dallasbasketball.com/home_display.asp
Makes a great point about how the average fans remember what they see last not the entire season about an MVP canidate. Most fans didn't see any of those games or remember those stats, even the bad ones. Somehow because Dirk is facing Nash's team head on he falters? I don't buy it.
