Could Brenley's job be in jeopardy if the Diamondbacks don't get things going in the next 2-3 weeks?

If he is, his replacement is standing in the 3rd base box. And when Pedrique takes over, the BabyBacks invasion takes place, and that's not a bad thing.

Brenly reminds me a lot of Dave McGinness...nice guy, but just not a field general.

Last time I checked Brenley was a manager not a pitcher.

Is there a pitching staff in the majors that is weaker 3-5?

Not to mention the bullpen.

The Dbacks had the worst team ERA in the bigs before this game. :hulk:

Brenly should not be in trouble....

Joe Garagiola Jr. should be. The construction of this team and pitching staff and the brilliant trades with Boston and Milwaukee are killing this team. Uh who is playing for us in exchange for Schilling? Uh who did we sign Shane Reynolds. Uh why couldn't we afford Miguel Batista, say what. Garagiola should be fired first or demoted to contract negotiations. His deals have sucked. Bautista's contract, Mantei's contract and on and on. Brenly will end up the fall guy and that sucks. You don't win with this staff, no one does.

Man, I'm with you. He has no sense of the value of players OR money - overpaid a bunch of guys despite knowing the money was just getting tighter every year, and then 'had' to make cost-cutting deals to cover his mistakes - how to get rid of Counsell and Spivey's overly-rich contracts? - Brewers insisted on Capuano. Give Dessens - who had one decent (and anomolous) year a two year contract, give Reynolds his Mill, Alomar his, Danny B was way overpaid - Oh yeah, bye Curt and Miggy... Donny friggin' Sadler fer crying outloud, instead of Tracy or Terrero getting a deserved shot. Patterson for Choate! I almost collapsed in relief that he didn't lock up Hillenbrand to a long-term, excessive contract this offseason, but next year beckons, I'm sure.

He repeatedly confuses the exceptional career year (or career month!) for a player's true/reliable performance level, he can't identify a capable non-Ace pitcher with both hands and a seeing eye dog, he thinks that top prospects are trade bait for injury-prone 'veterans', and he reaches down for the soap whenever their agents enter his office.

Other than that... I guess I'm going to enjoy watching Anaheim again this year. Fun team to watch. Arte Moreno - the Owner That Got Away.

The big problem is with Randy Johnson right now. We were really counting on him to get back to old form. Now, that faith may have been unjustified, however, if he was "Old Randy" then we'd be 4-4 instead of 2-6, and we'd feel a bit better.

But that is, as AZZenny notes, precisely the problem. Nobody should have expected Randy Johnson to be the Randy Johnson of old. Not at his age and not coming off the surgery.

The D-Backs also "expected" Shayne Reynolds to be the Reynolds of three years ago and Robby Alomar to be teh Alomar of three years ago. Ditto with all the other bad signings based on one good year.

Imagine what could have been...Vlad in right, Colon in the starting 5...Schilling still here, Miggy still here.....he would have pumped millions into this team.

Karl and Zenny, I echo your sentiments.

Brenly didn't assemble this ageing wreck, Garadufus and Colangelo did.

Unfortunately, Brenly is the guy who will be out of work. If Jerry handles the GM of the Dbacks like he does the GM of the Suns, Joe Jr is safe as kitten even if he puts the 2003 Tigers out there.

The writing is on the wall for Brenly but things are quite silent about Joe Jr.

The Reynolds move is turning into a collassal blunder.

Not to mention the return on investment for the Schilling trade and giving up a bit too much for Sexson

Very true. Not sure what they could have really done about Schilling but clearly they gave up too much for Sexson. The Dbacks handed the Brewers 4 starting position players (I think Moeller is starting??) and a starting pitcher.

Randy looked pretty damn good last night. He and Webb are not the problem. The starting rotation 3-5 is the problem. This will cause a good but not great bullpen to overheat especially with Brenly's penchant for double switches and situational substitutions. We need to have the 3 and 4 slots come through. Miggie and Capuano would look very nice right now with Elmer Fudd as 5 until we dump him after his contract expires.

We sure didn't give up too much for Sexson. Overbay, Counsell, and Moeller are marginal starters at best. Spivey is too inconsistent.

Exactly, we gave up people who would start for a sub par team like the brewers and got a superstar starter to play for the Dbax. I dont think they gave up to much at all. We improved in all the places we lost guys.

Chris Capuano & Jorge De La Rosa.

One thing this team had was an abundance of young pitchers. Capuano is gonna be marginal at best, and we won't know how De La Rosa will be. Just wait for Gonzalez, Gosling, and I know a few other guys down there to be ready. They're not that far away.

And Sexson is a free agent after this year. The trade is going to look real bad when several of these guys belong to Milwaukee for the next 6 tears if Sexson doesn't re-sign with the D-Backs.
