Our secondary is that bad. Got burned early and often.

But, we made good adjustments and stopped the Panthers when it counted.

On a side note...there's a book on Newton now. This is his last "easy" game.

Our secondary and the whole defense is that bad. There is no doubt about it. He isn't a complete bust though, he will make some stats in certain games, this is definitely one of them.

This defense is horrible. Carolina is the worst team in NFL by far, and this was a very close game with home advantage. That's not good!

IMO a rookie shouldnt & hasn't lit up a team like Newton in game 1. No doubt the secondary sucks rotten eggs & will until they get some very good OLB's.

There was a few positives in the D-line. They did really well stopping the run most of the game. Washington was all over the place. A couple of really weak calls they had to play trough.

The good news is our offense is back on track minus the OL! Kolb was running for his life most of the game and still ended up with 309 yards, 2TD.

I missed it too. wow. wasn't expecting 400 yards by Cam Newton. Glad to see the offense continues to play well. Last I heard it was 14-7 carolina and I figured they were just chewing up yardage on the ground. Never expected this.
On the other hand was glad to see they pulled out the win; wasn't expecting it.

didn't see all the game but damn! newton lit it up huh? :bang:

Steve Smith should have been double covered like Fitz was. There was good catches while covered very well as well as some jail breaks. So it was both.

Newton has a first start rookie record 422 passing yards against our new corners. But Horton deserves some blame for not adjusting or planning double coverage.

The good news is PP and Jefferson got 2 games of experience in their first game against Smith and those TE's!

Kolb is a keeper and Newton is that good. This is the NFL. Our seconday is average, yes average and will get better with the young CBs...don't confuse the horrible play of our over the hill LBs Porter and Haggins who cannot bring the heat anymore in a 3-4 and say it is all on our secondary

Horton deserves some credit FOR making adjusts that brought Newton back down to earth.

Cam is pretty good but I agree it's not going to be that easy again.

They didn't plan on him being able to hit a lot of those throws, and he can.

So he's much better than I ever thought he'd be which means you have to cover the entire field, you can't just bring up the secondary he's got a cannon, so he'll always be pretty good but teams will adjust now and force him to hit more accurate throws.

He's got a great arm though.

Our defensive front was fine this game. Newton only threw to wide open receivers for most of the game. Even when the announcers talke about "coverage sacks" and then talked about the quality of the coverage--they were wrong. There were players wide open all over the field.

They especially picked on Patrick Peterson. He was burned consistently all night. I am not sure whether it is the corners or the zone coverage scheme. It is probably both. Hopefully Peterson will improve. He looked horrible in coverage today. He did great as a punt returner though.

Beanie looked good. He ran hard. The hyphen is a waste in the backfield. He spends so much time trying to decide where he is going to run, he looks painfully slow. He would do better to just run forward.

Eeeked out a win. OK. Hopefully Peterson will improve.

Cam Newton looked good though. He did not throw risky passes, only threw to open receivers and was accurate for the most part. Looks like he is going to be a very good qb. He looked better than Kolb in this game.

In terms of gimme TD's and giveaways by Feely and Beanie, you could say:

- We were generous to a fault,

- Santa Clause was coming to town.

- We dodged a bullet.

- We lead the NFL in creative ways we can find to lose.

But fortunately, there was PP21, Early and DWash.

Whew! Lesson to be learned: We've got to clean up a whole mess of mental mistakes (like...er...hitting the QB in the wrong place or at the wrong time or beating the snap count on 4th & goal at the ten.. Or letting Steve Smith get 30 yards behind you on 3rd & long...or fumbling a pitch on their 6...or...)

I disagree, Kolb did not throw a pick and he was on the winning team and did not get sacked like Newton, . But I'm not taking anything away from Newton, they both played great

From what I could see, a good chunk of the plays were tough catches and really couldn't have been defended better.

You people who are putting this all on the secondary, tell me how the secondary is supposed to stop Shockey making a diving catch 2 inches from the ground, or Steve Smith catching a perfect pass over his shoulder?

We did get burned some, but overall I'd say it was a combination of very good passes and very good catches.

I think it was primarily due to the blitz being unable to get to Newton often enough. If you're blitzing and can't get to the QB, the DB's are going to get burned.

It was not on our secondary...it is Haggans and Porter unable to play to the level in a 3-4 they have to play at for it to work
