From what I could see, a good chunk of the plays were tough catches and really couldn't have been defended better.

You people who are putting this all on the secondary, tell me how the secondary is supposed to stop Shockey making a diving catch 2 inches from the ground, or Steve Smith catching a perfect pass over his shoulder?

We did get burned some, but overall I'd say it was a combination of very good passes and very good catches.

Lol you serious?there was a handful of good catches/passes, most were wide open.

A couple blown coverages accounted for about 130 of the yards(notice I didn't blame Rhodes). Also, it's their first game with 2 CB's that have never started before. And the first live game in a new system. They'll get better. Rhodes didn't have a good game and AW is never going to cover anybody. I thought Jefferson and Marshall were okay. I like the pressure they brought. By mid-season when it's Acho and Schoefield rather than Joey and Clark, they'll get to the QB. The run defense was very good.

OTOH OUR OLBs are that bad...Still dont know why OBSCHO IS NOT STARTING...

I'm hoping, and praying, that Acho and Schofield can supplant both Haggins and Porter as starters, as both our starting OLB's are not just over the hill but half way down it.

Listen, when you play a 3-4, and you have NOBODY at OLB to rush the passer... then the only was you can bring pressure is to bring a bunch of people... naturally when you bring a bunch of people, you are going to leave holes all over the field for WRs and TEs to find..

The only teams that can get away with bringing pressure this way are teams like the Jets who have lockdown corners... We have the exact opposite in two very young and raw corners, and our third CB was one of the worst CBs in the league last yr...

It's a toxic mix..

I give Ray credit for continuing to bring his blitzes and pressure... it worked enough that we won the game and sacked Cam on some critical downs (knocking them out of FG range)...

However, until this team gets some edge rushers or until the CBs grow up, we're going to get lit up..

I must have watched a differant game. He will struggle against the better defenses in the NFL IMO...2 many easy throws that almost any NFL QB couldve completed.

Steve Smith is that good.

An absolute Cardinal killer. Every day time......... unless it is the playoffs :D

Our secondary is "not very good right now" and our pass rush is something that needs to be planned, we do not have a 4 man pass rush.

But, at least we got the job done today. That is all that matters.

Good game too.

In terms of gimme TD's and giveaways by Feely and Beanie, you could say:

- We were generous to a fault,

- Santa Clause was coming to town.

- We dodged a bullet.

- We lead the NFL in creative ways we can find to lose.

But fortunately, there was PP21, Early and DWash.

Whew! Lesson to be learned: We've got to clean up a whole mess of mental mistakes (like...er...hitting the QB in the wrong place or at the wrong time or beating the snap count on 4th & goal at the ten.. Or letting Steve Smith get 30 yards behind you on 3rd & long...or fumbling a pitch on their 6...or...)

Thank goodness Newton wasn't finding the Cardinal killer down on the goal line

We should break his legs in pregame everytime we play them until he's retired :D

I swear, sometimes it seems like you want us to be bad. :p

Carolina isn't a bad defense; credit where credit it due. Our O did enough to win to game, and right now, that's all that counts.

Yes, this. Newton was accurate, but our secondary was generous and gave up lots of room. I am hoping its a symptom of still learning a new system.

Newton has a chance to be great but he'll need a lot more knowledge to do it.

He impressed me with how long he hung in the pocket, you can tell someone has worked on that and it shows.

He still has an accuracy problem on some throws, if he's going to be very good he's going to have to fit the ball into tighter windows than he has so far but overall with the poise and the arm if I'm a Carolina fan I'm estatic right now.

I was impressed with Newton. Although he is a rookie QB, he showed a lot of poise and made some nice throws. He definitely did not look like a rookie today. If today is any indication, he has a bright future.

The referees definitely need to look at the issue of roughing especially with a QB like him. It takes a strong hit to bring him down. He is a physical specimen.

I was at the game, and put me in the camp of "little bit of both".

Our secondary did not play well and they were plenty of wide open passes, but Newton played much better than expected and had several occassions where he put the ball right where it needed to be in tight coverage.

That being said, Newton is no Tom Brady, and I'd be very surprised if this wasn't his season high in passing yards this year. So, our pass defense needs to step up. You HOPE next year is a chance to keep learning/developing since we aren't playing a world beater at QB, but I'm not sure if we can rely on big plays on offense/special teams to bail us out of games all season like we got today.

I think it was a combination of both. Our secondary was playing very soft, off coverage. Horton was obviously trying to protect our young starters, so there were alot of wide open passes.

However, as we saw last year, wide open doesn't do you much good unless your QB can put the ball on the money and Newton was spot on all day, he also made some amazing throws.

I was a skeptical about him as anyone, I am not a Newton fan, but I have to tip my hat to him today. Our secondary is not very good and they have some major growing to do, but the dude put the ball on the money all day. No question about it. Newton was good today.

I tip my cap to Cam Newton.

He didn't wilt under the pressure---in fact, his vision under duress was remarkable---as was his accuracy on all his big throws, like the one he threaded to Smith with 13 seconds left in the 2nd half....and the one he threaded up the right sideline to Smith that was ruled incomplete---it was perfectly thrown. This kid is a gamer.

The problem was---as I see it---the Cardinal DBs were expecting him to be a little off so they were peeking several times too much---but---as the game went on, the Cardinal DBs played stickier and peeked less---which accounted for only 7 points given up in the second half. It became a matter of respect.

Our coverage was not very good. But Cam threw the ball much better than I expected. He looks like he can be a pretty good QB.

wow 422 yards? He looked pathetic against the bengals when I watched him for 3 quarters...even against their second team. what happened? I was not expecting that.

either way 1-0 is a great start. this is the real deal now so you gotta win the first one.

There is zero consistent pass rush. The only pressure we get is when we blitz (and consequently leave someone open or single-covered on the outside). A good QB will find the open man or a good WR will beat single coverage.

The front office chose to ignore the OLB position and we're going to pay the price. We could have Deion Sanders and Aeneas Williams at CB and it wouldn't matter with a pass rush this bad.

The major reason also was because we were playing a QB that could maneuver and run. We would have had 10 sacks against non mobile QB's like Eli, Bradford, etc. I mean Cam weaved and dodged alot of pressure alot...and then threw deep passes when the coverage broke down.

We also only gave up 7 points in the 2nd half.
