Or didn't want to show the Warriors, their likely round 1 opponent, anything.

but they could have ended the Warriors year if they beat them and then they wouldn't have to worry at all. hell, I'd think they'd MUCH rather play the Clips.

the above is possible though.

But pulling your starters, so that another team might have a chance to win isn't hurting the integrity?

I apologize. That was close to say, "I don't think it's right to sit starters..."

Dallas gets what they deserve. They have to face a red-hot Golden State team in the first round. I think at the very least Golden State is going to take the series to 6-7 games. I guess it's possible Avery Johnson was truly worried about starting his players against Golden State and getting beaten or even blown out.

We should start a poll:

How much would you pay to see the look on Cuban's face if Nelson's Warriors take out the Mavericks in the first round?

I'll say $500, but that's only because I'm poor.

Seeing the Warriors eliminate the Mavs... priceless. I'm all for Nelson's Warriors in this series. For an 8th seeded team they are a very dangerous match-up.

I'm poor too, but I'm sure I could raise the money if it would help.

It seems like a lifetime ago, but it was during the 88-89 and later 90-91 playoffs Don Nelson's Warriors pulled off some of the most surprising first round upsets ever. In 88-89 when they took out the Malone Stockton Jazz in three games. In 90-91 they took out David Robinson's Spurs. These upsets were memorable because Don Nelson showed how deadly "small ball" could be.

D'Antoni may be the most accomplished proponent of small ball in the NBA right now, but Nelson effectively invented it and should never be underestimated.

How much do you think Steve Nash would secretly pay through one of his shell corporations to see that? Maybe the difference between the two contract offers? I think so.

And I think I might pay $500 to see Nash's response.

I agree. But as I recall Cotton was the grandmaster of small ball. Cotton and Nellie really had some great small ball shootouts while Nellie was at Golden State. It's good to see him back there. I really admire him and I certainly miss Cotton.

Cotton had a lot better team than Nellie did back then and his small ball was not nearly as small as the Warriors. But I agree, they had some really fun games.

we were actually pretty big - West was 6'10, Chamber was 6'11 and whoever started at the other forward spot: Rambis or Ty Corbin or Tim Perry were all 6'7-9.

they just couldn't rebound worth a damn.

Holy crap. I would have to take out a second mortgage on my house, mt neighbor's house, and my uncle's house just to get to the amount in my head. It would be worth a bundle.

I agree...maybe we can persuade the newly elected ASFN president to enact a temporary ban on new accounts, kinda like the immigration quotas :D

That's true. In fact, it was Cotton who embarassed the Suns when he was coaching the KC/Omaha Kings in the playoffs.

He lost both of his starting guards, Otis Birdsong and Phil Ford, to injuries.

He started 2 Centers and 3 Forwards and eliminated the Suns in an upset.

On the other hand, Suns coach John MacLeod had a clear path to the finals a few years before that, moved his backup Small Forward to starting Center, and got blown away by the Sonics . . . who went on to beat the Bullets for the Championship.

Power basketball has always beaten finesse/small ball in the playoffs. Hopefully, this season's Suns will either prove or disprove that once and for all.

If we lose, and go into next season with the same philosophy, the message will be clear. Bringing in revenue during the regular season is all that matters.

Apparently the Dallas fans feel the same way. Here's a classic post on the Mavs board after they got whipped in game one by the Warriors.

Hey Avery, good job going small. That worked really well. Where the **** is Damp? All you did was play right into Nellie's ****ing hands.

We lose everytime Avery does this ****. He has no idea how to coach against these stupid teams. Maybe next time you ****ing play the starters against the Warriors to try to knock them out of the playoffs next time *******. I'd much rather be playing the ****ing Clippers right now.

Avery is the reason this team sucks right now. He has no idea what he's doing.
