Seems like we would have hired him already, and Buffalo already named a new HC so they're no longer interested. The risk at hand is that Cleveland (no Chip Kelly) and Jacksonville (if Keim jumps) could hire him, but realistically it doesn't seem like he will get a HC job unless we're the ones to pull the trigger.

Leads me to believe that we'll hire an offensive minded HC and give him a pay bump + Asst HC title if he can co-exist with McCoy/Gruden/Haley.

Aside from the Chiefs, how many teams are done with interviewing or who've hired their new head coach?

I'm not sure there ever was really a market for him. Look, he has turned out to be a solid coordinator, but he is very brash which can rub people the wrong way. He is not coming from a successful team, and he is a defensive coach in an offensive league. Not to mention he has a pretty limited ACTIVE coaching tree to pull a staff from. I mean we just fired several of his Pittsburgh colleagues, and he has had very limited exposure across the league in terms of working with other coaches. Pittsburgh has always been a tight-knit organization for coaches which makes it difficult when those individuals go out on their own. New England is the same way.

I said it before, I would be shocked if any other team seriously considered Horton as their head coach this year.

I expect him to be our next HC. MB has said (I believe) that you learn a lot going through the interview process. And MB might also feel that you hire a GM and THEN a HC. Or not.

Could change but this does seem to make sense. Horton may not like it but he will get opportunities for HC in the future if the defense remains solid.

I never thought it was a certainty that he would be a HC for the same reasons that you listed.

I think everybody's holding their breath waiting for Wiz to get hired somewhere. I think that will have a huge effect on the way things work out. If he does get hired, that's $5 mil or so cash in the pocket. That opens up the options big time. Without that, I think Horton is automatic.

Horton probably would be automatic anyway, but then Mikey's looking at rookie GM, rookie HC, possibly rookie OC and DC. Rookies across the board. I wonder if he's just sitting back and waiting to see what happens with Wiz first before he makes a move. If Wiz gets hired, open up the checkbook on an established offensive guy. If not, settle on a staff of rookies at their positions - but still happy you kept Horton.

It sure seems the market for our DC has fewer people talking about him as a new HC. If he stays with us I would at least give him a raise. He may not be a good interview?

DC - Russ Grim was the assistant HC.
Which means that, if another team offered Ray an Assistant HC/DC job, we couldn't prevent him from leaving even if we then agreed to match that offer.

Quite possibly Ray would be willing to stay here as Assistant HC/DC, but we're not 100% home free.

He is under contract. The only position that he can leave for is a HC position.

What is Horton's current title - DC? Or Assistant HC?

Jeff in our organization it seems titles have little meaning. To this day I do not really know what Graves was responsible for. I do not know who made the final call on draft choices or FA signings. I doubt any of staff had a job description. If we have an organization structure chart has anyone seen it? As an organization we needed to hire an organization specialist. Our previous organization chart would have Mr. B at the top and everyone else on the same level. When you have been a one man owner for over 50 year you tend do do it your way and are not much interested in advice from anyone. We all hope Michale is changing all that but even so it takes time as Mr. B does not immediately climb into a rocking chair after all these years. You can bet he still voices his opinion and it will take Michael some years to fully take control as Mr. Steinbrenner's son has done. Can you imagine George Steinbrenner cutting payroll or being out bid for a player he wanted? This is the largest change in personnel in Cards history which show Michael is involved. He seems like a guy who really wants to win and is a good business man. What he needs his good men to give him good advice to make his decisions on. He is no football genius and I would not expect him to be. He needs the best advisers he can get and be able to listen to them. The is a bellweather year for the Cards in management.

John the reason I asked was to determine whether a contractual technicality connected with job title would create a loop-hole for Ray to leave if he was unhappy with the way things were handled or turned out. Evidently, there's no loop-hole.

This. The Asst HC title is meaningless except for position coaches you're trying to chain in place, and really not even then.

There never was a Horton market. Overrated by this board as I have said all along. Love him as a Defensive Coordinator, but no head coaching experience ever, and only 2 years as a DC. Fills the minority requirement for teams, that's the long and short of it, even if it sounds callous. And where did we rank in run Defense? Not too good.
