Is it just me?

Are you as interested in the 2005 draft as usual?

I don't know, but it seems like this draft lacks a lot of the intrigue of the past two seasons. Maybe it's because a lot of us are sated with a 6-10 season and prospects of (much?) better next season. Maybe it's that this talent pool is somewhat shallow and lacking in playmakers. Maybe it's that we have Kurt Warner, and that the QBs that many salivate over aren't all that impressive in 2005. Maybe we're thinking that RB and CB are such faits accompli that Rolle is just as good as Jones is just as good as Rogers. Maybe it's that this draft doesn't feel like such a cornerstone as the last two have.

It seems like the debates aren't as passionate, the discussions aren't as full of invective, and the opinions are more arbitrary than any time I've been here.

All this leads me to ask: are you less invested in the 2005 NFL Draft than you were in the 2004 and/or 2003?

I think you hit it with #3. Last year, the question of whether McCown was good enough to start, coupled with at least one of Manning/Rivers/Roethlisberger being available for the taking, was huge. Plus the question of whether a Shipp/Smith tandem was worth not drafting Steven Jackson or Julius Jones.

I think another thing is that last year's draft was very impressive overall, so fans don't have as much at stake when it comes to worry about the Cards blowing picks.

What?
These drafts aren't going to be near as fun as in the past. We won't be doing those zany trade down manuevers and selecting players noone has ever heard of. That fun carnival atmosphere of waiting to see what those crazy Cardinals will do next is gone.

I think it's as interesting as last year overall--just moreso for the Cardinals because it seemed inevitable that we would have drafted Fitz last year.

You hit it for me with the lack of playmakers. Just no real star appeal in this draft. Mostly Lunch Pail guys, sort of like the 2000 draft.

Plus there isn't really any debate over one or two key players/positions for the Cards. Like Wadsworth v Woodson or Fitzgerald v one of the QB's or Suggs/Leftwitch v trading down.

I think it's more exciting because the Cards now have a clue and you know we'll get good players throughout the draft.Probably my lowest point of being a Card fan was when they passed on Lefty. When my buddies want to get me going they'll still bring that up every now and then. And i still get fired up over that fiasco.

If you think this one is boring just wait until the Cards are picking 32nd after winning the Super Bowl

I'm not interested in the draft because most of the discussion revolves around need which I think is about the worst possible way to draft. Instead I hope Denny develops a his own BPA list and sticks to it. I don't care if he skips a RB or CB if there is a player he has as better overall talent at a position that isn't "need".

Considering how heated debate was here last year, I'm surprised that so many think that this draft is just as good/interesting as the last one.

For me, there is far more intrigue than last year when everybody knew we were taking Fitzgerald.

This year we don't know anything about Denny's draft intentions and the Travis Henry/Shelton deal is simmering away on the back burner.

The talent pool in this year's draft is deep at two of the positions we need (RB, CB) and shallow at two others we need (TE, DT). Unlike last year, my guess is we'll deviate from BAP and draft for need in rounds 1 through 3.

Exactly!

During the previous decade the draft was looked forward to as the most promising day for Cardinals fans. We were filled with hope and expectation much like a kid waiting for Christmas to arrive. The anticipation was generally more exciting than the eventual outcome.

But goals of the Cardinals not being an embarrassment have given way to much higher expectations. Expections of winning seasons and playoff wins!

Draft day no longer holds the promise of the most exciting day of the year for Cardinals fans. The draft is now simply one of the tools in use to forge a more illustrious goal - a winning program.

Sure I am still a little anxious for the draft.... But what I really am looking forward to is the upcoming season!

Just when I forget about Leftwich you go and bring it up. Thanks.

The draft is just as exciting for me this year as in any other year. While we may know which way we are going with our 1st round pick, it is always interesting to see how things play out in other rounds. Did you have any idea as to which way Green was going to go last year in rounds 2,3,4,5 and aren't you curious to find out how we will go forward after round1 this year?

With Denny in the house you KNOW he's going to make good decisions, and his draft last year proves it. In the past you never knew what bust the Cardinals might sign, or if they'd get it right and sign a good player. Our last draft was solid, and I predict this one will be just as good. You can tell that while Denny wasn't coaching in the NFL he was scouting college talent. He just seems to have good insight about these players. If we can get at least two starters out of this draft, and get Lecky into rotation from last year, we will be playoff bound, although I am worried about our lack of good CBs and a TE.

Every year I'm more curious about which UFA's are gonna stick than the actual draft. I'm a giant supporter of the underdog, which is why I liked Ronald M. and KLas, and still like Shipp so much.

for some it is good and some it is bad

I think that the ability for the fans to watch the combine has had different effects on the overall interest...

Before when you didn't know the full package on a player and it was like opening a present and you had no idea what you were getting but it is optimism that drove the fan....now we can see the deal and some fans seem to think that the luster is gone.

As far as the talent pool it is deep at corner and rb and not so much at d line or o line but the Cards are in a great position with their picks and if Denny can add one more day 1 pick this could be a really special draft for this team which is in the midst of buidling a solid team.

I'm looking forward to this draft BECAUSE I trust Denny to not do anything stupid. No stupid trade downs, no panic attacks, and no reaches. I can look forward to the draft without any nightmares!

For example: Shaun Talyor versus Derrick Johnson. Both were more or less consensus "Best player in the draft," right? Remember all the buzz on Taylor, that he was the future of the position, that he'd immediately be one of the best players at his position, etc.?

Anyone notice how NO ONE is saying that about Derrick Johnson? The buzz on the guy is flatlined. What's up?

The one thing we are pretty sure about is Green. He is the difference maker.
Last year we were unsure about everything going in. This year we have most likely a better team going into the draft and we have confidence that who ever we pick the likelyhood it will be a solid pick.

Looking forward to the draft as I do every year. Draft is deep in RBs and CBs which are the Cards needs. I see the Cards getting good players on the first three rounds that should see plenty of playing time.

I voted for the best ever draft. Like just about every other year, Card need RB's and CBs. This year, 1) the Cards might actually draft both, 2) it is a deep draft in both positions, 3) last year's draft gives us hope, 4) I think every draft is going to be the best ever and the one to put the Cards over the top.

I don't expect as good as a top 10 this year, but the rest of the draft is very good. I think we will get just as many or more good players as last year. If we get 3-4 more rookies that start and put up solid production like last year, playoffs here we come.
