This is probably a silly question but is it ok to like Arizona and Arizona State? I'm not really a die hard of either one but I've always kinda liked ASU since they are closer to Phoenix. I also like Arizona since they have a really good basketball program.

My question, is it acceptable to like both? I know they are in-state rivals but is it a huge rivalry to where I would get a lot of crap for supporting both?

I'm having a hard time choosing between one or the other so I figure I'll just like them both.

I have no problem with it, I mean, until you attend either one then why should you really have a deep rooting interest for one or the other?

That said, when they play each other, you damn well better be rooting for UofA!:cats:

hehe I have no real "ties" to either one or anything but I am a true fan of all the other Phoenix teams so I figure I might as well be a Arizona or Arizona State fan... or a little of both. I'm not a huge college sports fan anyways so I guess I'll just root for both.

There's a lot of people in AZ (actually I'd say the majority) that root for both.

My suggestion for the sake of your mental health is choosing UofA Basketball and ASU Football.

I didn't go to either school (my grades were too good :p), but follow ASU football and UofA basketball. I probably have more allegiance to ASU given the fact that I grew up in Tempe. Both of my parents' incomes also depend directly on ASU (my mom works for ASU and my dad operates four coffeehouse/cafes on campus). That said, I follow UofA basketball the most because they're usually very good.

I am a fan of every major Arizona sports team since I was borned & raised here. I go to ASU but like U of A as well. I agree w/ Mao, I like ASU football, U of A basketball and both schools baseball teams.

The only 'real' Arizona is the pre Gadsen purchase Arizona. Any team that doesn't play in pre Gadsen territory, you shouldn't route for :p You grew up in the Valley, but didn't go to ASU, same situation as me ,and I'm a huge ASU fan (though I grew up going to all the football and baseball games). I say go for the Devils :D

I graduated from the UofA so of course I will pull for the Cats. That is the same for those who graduated from ASU. I can't speak for those who did not attend either school but I can see them pulling for both universities.

didn't attend either (again, problem with grades . . . too high). thus i go with my history. as a kid i grew up watching and routing for sean elliott, muehlbach, othick, lofton, etc. but i had a lot of good friends and high school teammates play asu football. so my natural inclination was to root for asu football and uofa hoops. in baseball its asu also. and the funny thing? i can root for asu hoops, but just can't bring myself to root for uofa football. guess it was going to asu-uofa football games and actively rooting against uofa. so in a nutshell:

football - asu (boooo uofa!)
basketball - uofa (with some heart going out to asu)
baseball - asu (indifferent to uofa)

another reason i like uofa hoops . . . at a territorial cup game in tucson my friends and i drove down and scalped uofa student section tix. that's right, dumb uofa'ers sold us their tix, even though we were wearing devils gear. devils were winning and students started throwing beers on us (i do not fault them for that, that's what they're supposed to do). chris mills was sitting near us and turned around and shouted at the beer throwers to stop it (despite the fact that he wasn't getting hit). had a nice convo with him.

Brother - you can cheer for whomever you want. Especially if you didn't attend either school. I grew up in Tempe, but went to U of A and now live out in FLA. So my allegience goes

1. UA
2. ASU
3. PAC-10

Personally if it says arizona anywhere in the name I am cheering for it.

But you can cheer for whomever you like for whatever reasoning you like. Just ask Gee ;)

As a side note - all these Mensa members whose grades were "too high" for the state schools. Two points:

1) You better tell me you went to an IVY league school if you are going to be snarky like that. Only 50 grand a semester gets you a pass with that kind of elitist commentry.

2) Some people attend state schools for reasons other then the grades they got in high school. Money, proximity to home, and other factors all come into play.

Not that I took offense to that comment or anything:)

I hold degrees from both, so I root for both, just not in the same sports.

i'm not from out here and didn't consider either in my college search

i've always had a disdain for UA basketball and lute and that has kind of carried over to all of UAs programs

i was completely indifferent to the sun devils and didn't even realize NAU existed

since moving out here I find myself pulling for ASU to do well - i also hate UA a little bit less mainly because I've made it down there and actually enjoyed their campus

i really don't pull for any UA sports but have many friends that do the ASU football UA basketball thing

I don't really have a strong preference for either school (as I didn't attend them), but I think overall it is:

UA Boys BBall > ASU
ASU Girls BBall > UA

ASU Football > UA Football - simply because I see ASU on TV more.

This is really mind boggling. I've never met anyone like this in my life, and this thread is making it sound common place. I can't imagine being such a goofy front runner. Pick a school and go with it I say.

That's because it is commonplace in AZ. As I stated earlier, most people I encounter root for both schools unless there is a family connection or are an alumnus. You really think transplants who make up the majority of AZ's population and have no connection to either of the schools give two craps about the ASU-UA rivalry? Of course not, they root for whoever's on TV and is doing well.

it's mainly the natives I know who do this as well - granted they didn't attend either university

probably just what was on TV when they were growing up

Yah like I said, Ive lived here all my life and haven't encountered it. Though the majority of my friends are natives, or what I would call nearly natives (moved here when they were like 6), so they are mostly fans of the Valley sports teams. I think perhaps its because I'm young (24), so I'm part of a growing generation of people born and raised in AZ.

Anywho, not that I care, but it just doesn't even seem fun to me to do something like that. Part of the fun of sports, especially college sports, is the (often) silly rivalries. Its fun to 'hate' UA if for no other reason than 'you're supposed to.'

Have a degree from ASU. Like both schools. Prefer ASU to win in head-to-head games.

Didn't enjoy going to a football game at UA, with the wheelchair spots directly behind the UA band. The back row of the band, the trombone players, stood on top of their benches the entire game. Saw nothing the entire game.

Won't go back just because the stadium architecture prevents me from seeing the game. The band members were cool. Not their fault. Enthusiastic kids.

Hope both schools' hoops teams win today.
