Welcome to Amareca
Especially so if the Suns make the playoffs now?
Porter got a bad rap here. I was all in when Porter was hired, but I eventually became lukewarm about him over the course of the season. However, he didn't get a fair shot and as a result, ownership chose to forgo short term pain for a long term paradigm shift for the franchise.
They could have let him build this team his way. Give him a couple of offseasons, a couple of drafts. Get rid of the malcontents and spoiled brats that comprise this roster (and have since the beginning of this franchise). Bring in toughness and grit. Change the overall dynamic of this team. That's the fair shot he deserved.
Instead, we get an ownership group who is afraid to bite that bullet, so what we'll get is another 40+ years without a championship because they are afraid of the discomfort that comes with a paradigm shift.
While people around here got impatient with Porter, the real culprits in all of this are the players who weren't willing to man up and the ownership group who would rather satiate short term fan base impatience against the long term gains of ultimately making this team a legitimate contender.
I grew lukewarm on Porter because he didn't do enough. He didn't bench Amare. He didn't bench Nash. The only players who held it down through all this were Shaq, JRich, Barbosa and Hill. Nash put up effort, but he became a malcontent and for that he should have rode some pine. Amare was an outright loafer and he should have been sent to the showers sometimes. Porter should have stamped this team that way and upper management should have let him....

Because of how he was as a player and the systems he both played under and coached in....
He wasn't hired as the coach of a rebuilding team, so I'm not sure why you give him a pass here. He was hired to take a good team and try to make it better by instituting a defensive philosophy. That's it.
And he failed miserably.
JVG was being a horses ass today during the celtics game. I know he was just playing devils advocate, but he was putting way too much blame on the team. Porter destroyed the offense, period.
