My wife is showing some symptoms consistent with mild plantar fasciitis, and we're wondering what the standard remedies are for helping it to heal. Does anyone here have some hardcore training in sports medicine?

I'd be interested. Everything I've read is to avoid pounding on hard surfaces (sand running is a good training technique to cut down on pounding), but I've never heard of anything for civilians.

Since it's an injury often suffered by basketball players, I thought someone here might have first-hand experience. "Official" medical advice isn't much use until the symptoms become severe enough that the diagnosis is beyond dispute. My left leg is permanently weakened because it took me five weeks to get my ruptured Achilles properly diagnosed; I wish I had gotten advice from laypeople earlier on in the process.

Sorry to have wasted everyone's time.

Wish I could help, Eric, but all I've had is a broken ankle and a strained hip flexor. :(

You're not wasting anyone's time. This is probably the most legitimate thing that's come up on this board in months. I just don't think we knew quite how to react to it. And, plantar fasciitis is probably the funnier name for a really freaking annoying injury in the world.

There was a similar thread on the Cardinals forum a couple years ago may want to try asking there. Pretty sure there were atleast a couple of people who've had experience with the injury.

Maybe you should take your wife into a doctors office

And maybe you should stop being an ass, although I don't think that's possible.

Did you choose not to read this part, pokerface?

If you have nothing to say to help him, that's fine. But your posts in this thread just show why a lot of people see you as a troll.

Why do people that are supposedly my moral superior always resort to name calling?

Anyway, telliing elindholm to take his wife to a doctor is harldy trolling...more like truth telling. If he trusts a Suns board more than professional medical advice for his wife thats his folly.

If he's too cheap to take his wife to a Doc google "plantar fasciitis" and see what treatments are done for it. I mean c'mon already...I thought everyone knew that.

Thanks, that would be appreciated. Obviously we're talking mild symptoms here, but it has become enough to be annoying.

Pokerface apparently lives in a world where doctors actually listen to what you say and make thoughtful, informed recommendations, free from the financial influences of insurance companies. That's beautiful, and I applaud him for finding his way to such a utopia; one marvels at how he can still manage to be so bitter and snide. For the rest of us, there's no harm in asking people with personal experience.

Apparently you're in a world with no google. I heard one can find more answers there than a Suns forum...could be a tad more reliable too.

You can thank me later!

First hand -- I had it really bad last year, right before a two week overseas trip. Once I figured out the right plan, I was 80% better in a couple weeks.

Most important -- get a sleeper brace -- go to Footsplints.com -- then get really good commercial runner's orthotics -- I love Powersteps -- do not walk barefoot if you can avoid it -- do exercises to stretch the hammies, calves and achilles tendons, and feet, and also exercises to strengthen the feet -- there are good lists of exercises on-line.

It is probably worth seeing a doc ONCE for a couple reasons -- I had bad scarring of the achilles tendons (I'm allergic to levaquin, the antibiotic, which for some reason can screw up big tendons) and also had an actual small tear in the plantar fascia -- plus I have HIGH arches, so that meant getting sneakers designed for high-arch people, which is not usually the case. A really good running store can advise which sneakers. Because of the tear, I had to be careful for several months to keep wearing the night splint even after I was feeling a lot better in general, and not to run for the phone, ever.

What did NO good -- Physical therapy -- one session to learn the exercises was useful, after that the foot massage was nice but not worth the time and money. The electrostim is nonsense. LED light therapy -- nah, fraid not. The walking foot boot - nope, and hurt my hip. $200 custom orthotics -- tried those years ago, not impressed. I did some research, and the Israeli army found that very high-caliber commercial runners orthotics (~$25 a pair) were as or more effective than custom orthotics in the vast majority of cases and were more comfortable and more likely to be worn regularly.

Try WebMD.com Eric. It's a hypochondriacs wet dream. Joking aside. I think it's one of the best sites for info about medical conditions.

I don't have all that much use for doctors but one thing they are generally useful for is diagnosis. Yeah, they often don't take you too seriously if its not yet a big problem but if you asked them directly if they thought it 'PF' or something else they'd give you an opinion on that.

I looked up 'plantar fasciitis' on the net a year or so back when some basketball player was troubled by it and noticed that there were things one could do to help but none of them were quick or certain - so they probably wouldn't be things you'd want to do if you weren't pretty sure you actually had the early stages of plantar fasciitis.

I remember that heel spurs were one of the possible causes so a doc might want to take x-rays if he suspected that. Even worse for the pocket book he may want an MRI to look at the tendon itself, though maybe in the early stages usually nothing shows up. You can nix those things in any case and insist on his best guess.
