Is there any safety net at the QB position?

I know there is no quality starter to pick up at this point. I just want a slightly below average one that will maybe give our defense a chance, along with somewhat of a running game and Fitz making alien catches, to pull out some victories. The more reports I hear out of camp so far, the more I think Kolb and Skelton are both just not going to cut it and the whole 'they still need more time to judge' stuff is going to run its course by the fourth game of the season. We are going to know about Kolb soon enough with games to spare and if wrong...we will not have a option (Skelton is great guy, crap accuracy). Kolb can look decent, maybe, but I do not think he will stay healthy. Can we even trade a player at his point for another team's mediocre second string QB which still might do better than our options? Just frustrated and rambling guys, because this looks like our coaching staff standing in the middle of the train tracks with the Union Pacific blaring down the tracks and they do not want to make a move LOL. Just hoping against hope Kolb will prove to be average and stay on the field, or a miracle will happen and Skelton will put on Warner's gloves and find the zone with his accuracy.

I do not think there is anyone worth signing at this point and I would not want to give up any picks/players for anyone who would be available via trade. I think Skelton/Kolb can and will be league average. I really do not think there is a second stringer that would come in and play better than either of those guys at this point.

I'd be inclined to at least wait until we see how they look in a (quasi) "real" game on Sunday before rushing to judgment.

In fact, it may take more than one game to reach any solid conclusion.

Consider our other options - like signing Donovan McNabb who, according to most observers is "done." And then there's the unknown factor of teaching a newcomer a new offensive system and getting used to new personnel.

On face value - these is what we've got, and our best probable option is to work on making them better for the time being instead of reaching for the Big Eraser.

This isn't to say I'm overjoyed with their performance in a short time-frame under limited conditions, thus far, but our options are kind of limited.

Wish we would have kicked the tires on David Garrard.

Who knows I know a guy that's getting lots of hype is Brian Hoyer in NE but I suspect there's some subterfuge there. The Pats drafted Mallett and my guess is they're leaking talk about how much they like Hoyer so someone will try and get him in a trade and they just keep mallett?

A quick look says there's not an obvious guy out there that can be had if our QB's don't pan out. It's why I'm praying Kolb stays healthy and Skelton figures out his accuracy issues.

Even though they just signed him, a guy like Jason Campbell could probably be had for something. Not that he's the answer by any means.

I still think Kolb is going to be serviceable... as long as he stays healthy. (I feel like that statement should be automatically attached to the end of any message on here with the word "Kolb" in it.)

No, Colt is not the answer with his arm strength (in the pros his deep passes really do look like one of Zat's punts)...we already have captain checkdown in Bartel who is a stronger version of the weaker Max Hall from the world of limited arm strength lol.

Captain Checkdown? The last 3 years Bartel has averaged 9.8, 8.9 and 9.8 yards per attempt!!!!

Of course that is before Labor Day when he hangs out his Closed For the Season sign.

:D

Will be fun to watch him light up the Saints spares Sunday though he usually saves his best game for last. Totals for pre season game four 2009-2011:

Everyone laughs at Bartel, but he's no worse IMO than these chumps dueling it out for starting QB. Hell, maybe Bartel is like when the Rams got KW playing arena league or some sh*t. Nobody knows what's in a dude's heart.

Agree 100%

I dont think we will know anymore after Sunday than we know today since the coaches are largely treating the HOF game like a glorified scrimmage. Wells and Williams are out, leaving LSH and Alfonso Smith as the primary running backs. And I doubt the team would want to keep Fitz and other key players on the field for more than one meaningful possession (unless we immediately go 3 and out the first go-around).

Our best (and only) option for 2012 is one of the two battling it out because, like you said, teaching a newcomer the offense is not what this coaching staff wants to do (again).

I do feel like too many fans are already giving up on the QB position already, and we have yet to see either QB in a preseason game. I'm with you in that I am taking a "wait and see" approach.

And McNabb is done. He's been purged from 3 teams in 3 years. The only person that doesn't recognize that is himself.

If Tannehill does play well, it could make either Moore or Garrard expendable. Both are vested veterans, meaning their entire 2012 salary becomes guaranteed if they are on the Week 1 roster.

Moore is in the final year of a two-year contract, and the Dolphins could avoid paying him a $2.75 million salary if it cuts or trades him for a mid-round pick (Moore would still cost $750,000 against the salary cap).

If the Dolphins cut or trade Garrard, who signed a one-year deal this offseason, they could avoid paying him a $2.25 million salary, though they already gave him a $1 million signing bonus and $100,000 workout bonus (Garrard would count $1 million against the cap if cut).

IF both Kolb and Skelton can't get it done, Garrard or Moore wouldn't be a bad stopgap option. Garrard apparently looks reborn this summer, so it would probably be Moore.

However, this would be the worst case scenario. Neither of these guys should be more than one year fill-ins.

Garrard would have been my pick if the Cards had dumped Kolb before his bonus and then missed out on Manning.

But I agree with others. Its too late in the game now, a revolving door of our current turds will be our QBs. Our safety net is the draft and that no QB on our roster has big guaranteed money remaining.

My guess is that over the course of the year Skelton will not perform worse than he has previously. Of course, lack of improvement means his dreams of being an NFL starter are probably done, but if we're just looking for a stopgap this year, I'd rather take a repeat of his past performance then bring in someone else. I could be convinced about Gerrard, but would have to hear a lot more about how this will be a great second act for him.

But if Kolb shows no improvement...man, what a disappointing signing. Would love to see him flip the switch.

I think that 1 developmental project at a time. If Bartell and lindley do not prove worthy of future consideration don't keep them at emergency QB? I don't know if Mcnabb would make both Kolb and Skelton better at veteran 3rd QB presence?

Mcnabb is a HOF QB, knows Kolb intimately and is excelllent at what we want Skelton to improve at. Price matters, but if we are already looking at next years draft, I trust Mcnabb if both QB's went down going into the playoffs like Houston?

If He can beat out our 1 and 2- and he might in this flawed system! My dad always told me to marry an ugly woman, so when she leaves, you aint out much! Lindley and Bartell look to have no chance of beating out our low end NFL starters- on any given Sunday?

McNabb is toast, in Minnesota he was throwing wobblers on 10 yard passes. And given the difficulties he supposedly has in grasping offensive schemes, I cant imagine how bad he would do here.

We may have a shot at Logan Thomas( who reminds me of Josh Freeman) or

Tyler Bray ( who owns a cannon for an arm and has been compared to Mathew

Stafford
I want to see either of those 2 play well in college before thinking they can play in the NFL. I've seen Logan Thomas and he stinks. I haven't seen much of Bray other than hype.

"knows Kolb intimately" ...that is not how the term is properly used THESMEL, unless you really are implying what I hope you are not lol

I was watching him fairly closely this week in practice. He LOVES being on the field. There's just something there that I don't think Kolb or Skelton have.

Kolb really seemed aloof and not all that connected to his teammates. Skelton is the big, strong kid who needs to be told to settle down and learn finesse. I thought a few of his passes were going to go into the crowd. In fact I think one did, though it took a bounce first.

Bartel is hard to figure. Outstanding, HOF numbers in pre season. And terrible numbers in real games. He may just be one of those guys who is far better than the spares he faces in the pre season games but yet not good enough to compete with the starting 11 on other teams defenses.
