I’ve thought long and hard about it and it has to be Wirfs, but not at RT I draft him and play him guard right next to DJ and protect my young QBs blind side for the next 5 years.

a lot of people are saying Wirfs will be best at guard in the NFL.

I’m really torn on the draft this year. So many possible good selections. If we are drafting someone to play guard though I would rather have a WR.

ive been doing those draft simulators a fair amount (as in: way too much)

one thing is clear from that:

If you go WR at #8, in most simulations, the OT choices get pretty thin at #40 -- and there are far higher ranked players at different positions available.

if you go OT at #8, there are usually WRs at #40 that are ranked right there --

Yeah I think he is more ready to play from day one but maybe Wirfs ceiling is higher

I agree about Wirfs’ ceiling and I don’t dislike the kid but...
1) With all that talent and probably the best line coaches in the country, why wasn’t he better in college? Why isn’t he anywhere close to the technician that previous Iowa studs were?
2) Attitude isn’t learned. Wills has it. I just love his tape. Watch him finish. He doesn't just block people. He puts them on the ground. Then he puts them right back down when they try to get up. Then he lays on their asses until the play is over. He does it all viciously too. He needs to get his hands down some but that can be taught. Coming from Bama, he’s disciplined and he’s a winner.

Wills has a high floor but I like Wirfs’ upside more if we’re drafting a tackle that high. He’s got more ability between the two to move to the left side eventually.

I disagree with drafting a OT at #8 with the purpose of moving him to guard. Just like a lot of people complain about here, you are drafting a square peg to try and fit a round hole. Most of the "move from tackle to guard" guys are because the team feels like they are not athletic enough to hold up at OT.

If we went with Wirfs, Wills, Thomas, or Beckton...IMO it has to be as a RT starter from day 1, with the ability to move over to LT in 3 years when DJ's contract is up...so we have a lot more leverage if we choose to sign him again or move on. If the kid can't start at RT from day 1 and move to LT when needed, then I don't want to spend a top 10 pick on them.

As far as career RT's and OG's, there are guys in the 2nd and 3rd that can fill those roles really well and have long NFL careers.

We can get a good Guard in rounds 3-4. One Guard I'm high on for obvious biased reasons is Logan Stenberg from the University of Kentucky. Mel Kiper has him ranked as the 3rd best. He has a nasty streak, dude is tough as hell.

Wirfs or Wills would be great. Proven at RT, great athletes but also already very good football players. Can't remember any blue chip RT prospects recently, and this class has at least 2 of them. Our biggest OL need is at RT. No experiment with moves to guard or LT. If you take Wills or Wirfs, you put them exactly where they excelled in college which was RT.

So the idea let's draft a RT and turn him into a G when a RT would be the biggest place you need an upgrade, I would be a big time no on that idea draft a RT and play him at RT I'm good with that.

All 4 defensive players are gone and maximum 1 OT Or WR have Been drafted and the rest is available.

Scenario 3
Trade down to 12th Or 13th. An elite OT Or WR Will still be there
