A lot of weeks of consideration have been tumbled around and these are some thoughts on this offseason.

The defining characteristic of really successful offenses is a powerful offensive line. Great quarterbacks become so due to having time and having options. Lots of talented QB's never achieved success because they couldn't run their offense. Teams that can't run and are forced to throw, give defenses an easy time in coverage and nothing works. Teams that give up a bunch of sacks have all their drives come to an early end, get their qb's hurt, and get their RB's and WR's disgruntled. Their punter becomes the team MVP.
There are ways to build a middling offensive line with late round picks and other team's castoffs, but you need a lot of cohesion, a lot of great coaching, and a lot of luck with health.
Our team's identity for the next few years is going to be its offense. It's who our coach is. It's what we've invested in, in recent drafts with our qb and all the receivers. We've risen from awful to middling offensively but will rise no higher without a serious commitment to the OL right now.
We probably won't win the Super Bowl this coming year, but can set ourselves up really well for the following years by getting the experience together now. A young dominant O line on their rookie deals bodes very well. We've resigned Humphries. Everyone else is a late round project or an aging/middling FA. Kyler saved our offense last year with his agility but we can't continually count on narrow escapes.
WR's are plentiful. Defenders can be had in FA and next year.
There is discussion on another thread about why Wisconsin and Alabama RB's are great in college and struggle in the pro's. It's not that big a mystery. Wisconsin and Alabama routinely have far and away the best offensive lines in college ball. The line makes the offense, especially the run game. You can't get away without it. And the run game sets up the pass game. Every year first round RB's flop, while UDFA's become stars. Why? Great lanes to run through. It's the simple answer, and it has to finally happen.

1) Wirfs/Becton
2) Kindley
3) Biadasz

Offensive domination for next five years.

Getting a first round WR sounds flashy. The game is won in the trenches. Load up the D this FA season and get a WR anytime.

This year go OL in the first three rounds and be set for years to come with a dominant O.

Infront of the TV - cursing this team.
The hot girl (Lamb) or the average looker in nursing school (Wills/Wirfs) . .
The younger me jumped on the trophy girl. If I could go back and talk to that young man . . he'd probably laugh me off.
The older wiser me would see the value in building on a solid foundation.
Lock down our O line. Give Kugs the horses up front and Any RB will be effective. Give our exceptional QB another second to
work his magic.
Let's see what Butler and Andy become with playing time and a run game to balance the attack.
Actually . . no regrets on the hot girl. It was a spectacular train wreck.

agree that ol has to be addressed in rd 1 or 2

not a fan of the "all draft" approach

the practical is that i dont want more than one rookie starting on the o line

then there is the contract issue when they all basically reprice the in a one year period

If they think Lamb is a legit number one, then cool beans... if not, we do not need whistles but a bell so Kyler has time to clock the defense at his relative leisure at the OL position lol

Not all draft, but we must strike while the iron is hot. This perennial problem has to be solved or we are stuck in purgatory forever. Any quality skill position player can work behind a powerhouse offensive line, but not the reverse.

Take David Johnson as an example. We had a really good O Line in 2015, his rookie season, and he ran wild. Our line turned to crap, culminating in 2018's slaughterhouse where they were all out on IR, and somehow DJ forgot how to run?

A quarter of the team needs new contracts every year anyway. Grab two guys and you won't have a problem with the contracts. Fail to, and you'll have a problem on the field. We're working to get out of last place here.

No one can argue the point you're making. Historically, the truly great teams are good to great in the trenches. We're weak in the trenches on both sides of the ball, so there has to be some change. Cannot get it all done in one offseason though. Let's see who's still there at 8, then take the best available. I don't want the 3rd best OLineman, if the best linebacker is there, or the best DLineman is there, or the best WR1 is still there, or the best CB in the draft is still there. Impossible to say who we should pick until we see who's left after the first 7 picks.

@AZCrazy, great take. It does seem like it has to be the move.

@legend, I learned that the average looker still ends up either crazy or boring... may as well go for the looks. :D

I like OT in Round 1 and Edge Rusher in Round 2.

Hoping for some combination of:
Wirfs/Thomas/Becton
Weaver

All 3 of the Top OT's have swing tackle potential, Thomas and Becton played LT predominantly after playing well at RT their freshman years. Wirfs probably solidified himself as the #1 OT after his impressive Combine showing.

With how expensive pass rushers are, to get a guy like Weaver to compliment Jones would be a coup with our first 2 picks. This would allow ARZ to maybe look at a cheaper option like Jordan Jenkins to form an OLB trio of Jones, Jenkins and Weaver.

I am probably the minority in thinking ARZ should go after Amari Cooper to solve the #1 WR position as their big ticket FA. Cooper has established himself as a go to receiver so instead of going with Jeudy or Lamb, you go solidify the OT position which should give Murray more time to find Amari Cooper.

Not interested in a Diggs trade due to cost of draft picks when you can just pay Cooper that kind of money and keep your picks.

Trade back in rd 1 and then pick an OT. This will be your starting RT. Then in rd2 draft front 7 on D or interior OL.

Cards will have a 2nd pick in rd 2 or 3 because of the trade back in rd 1. One should be a WR and the other another trench player.

Interior OL in day 2, most likely they don't start this year but are ready to kick a$$ next year.

If we go Wirfs/Willis(preferably them 2 much more than Thomas or Becton), then give me Blacklock or give me death in round 2.

I'm for taking WR Lamb in Round 1 and looking for an OT in Round 2 and perhaps another OL in a latter round. Lamb can start and contribute on day 1 while IMO getting an Ot to be productive may take some time. BA says that they no longer teach an OL how to block in college.

Diggs is locked in for 14m.

The 9th pick will be locked in for about 5m.

Cooper is going to cost ~20m/year.

This is what you want to get for 20m/year?

Wouldn't the fact that KK is mostly running his Offense ( a college style offense ) mean that a top notch OT would be able to be effective for us. Now in BA's hold the ball for biscuit offense an OT does need to spend extra time learning a pro style offense.

I think any of the 4 top OT's will be able to start at RT for us and have a huge impact. Plus this isn't going to be a Super Bowl contending team this year so laying the foundation (trenches) now would be better IMO. There will be a ton of quality WR's in the first two days of the draft this year and a bunch next year and the year after. Point is college football is producing a bunch of WR's because of the majority of the schemes they are running.

As opposed to giving up a second round pick AND $14 million? for a guy who has 1,000 yards twice and has never been top 15 in yardage or receptions? Yes, every day.

Probably less than that since we’d only be on the hook for his base salary no? PP likely has 2nd rd value at this point given he’ll be 30 and needs a new a deal. Vikings need a corner but Peterson straight up for Diggs isn’t enough... Diggs has mid-late 1st rd value in this draft.

I didn't see any of this in the Bengals or Falcons game last year before he got hurt & benched for Drake. You can see him fighting for extra yardage on several occasions.

I thinks Wilks & co hurt him more than anything. The RB coach told him to quit zig zagging too much & just put his head down & run straight ahead or something to that effect. You didn't see him do any jump cuts under Wilks.

I'm not in the game of trading PP21. We only have so many years with cheap Kyler, right? Why ditch a proven superstar for a guy who has never sniffed a pro bowl?

Because one is clearly out of his prime while the other is clearly entering his.

Yeah, give me Simmons or Wills at 8. Other than them I'd be willing to trade down for that extra day 2 pick, mtl for C, DL or Edge.

Their is no dominant game changing Oline in the first, KK uses alot of WRs the Cards have Kirk and a retire any season Fitz. Sounds like they are happy with Murray at RT, Keim has never been able to build an Oline and doesnt make it a priority. Sounds like he is going to just tweek this on end go with continuity.

Murray needs weapons Lamb camp all day or Simmons if there, to cover TEs, and WR in the 2nd
