Now how the hell are they going to add 4-5 nba players?!? That sounds like they’re scrapping the “timeline” and likely going to ship out some youth. So let me get this straight:

Went into rebuild when shipped out Nash,

Had some unexpected fortune with Bledsoe/dragic so scrapped rebuild and went for win now,

That went belly up so back to rebuild with tank and the timeline,

That (shockingly, I know), didn’t result in immediate wins, so scrapping that to get 4-5 nba players to win now.

This has blindly stumbling around with no plan emblazoned all over it.

4-5 nba players will necessitate lots of money and likely assets. In other words likely kiss goodbye some of the young prospects we lost so many games to get.

I see a josh Childress, Hakeem Warwick, hedu turkoglu offseason looming.

Well that’s a scary thought. This is what happens when you don’t have continuity in the front office or at least an owner who is willing to pick a plan and stick with it.

Would Jones trade Zion for a package of current NBA players if they somehow lucked in to the top draft slot?

In all fairness, bringing in the veterans around Booker and Ayton (and presumably Bridges or JJ or whoever is left) is a bit different than "rebuilding" around Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe. As long as they keep Booker, Ayton, and Bridges, I am OK with trading the rest of the youngsters for established players. Booker is already really good, presumably Ayton should be outstanding, and I think Bridges will be one of the best role-players in the league in a couple of years.

If 4-5 rotation players include Oubre and Holmes then I can see that happening without much sacrifice. Trading our pick for 1, signing 1 or 2 in free agency, and resigning our own guys. That's a minimum of 4 players, 5 if the money stretches a good amount. I don't think it's impossible.

Drafting in the top 5 is 1 rotation player added.
Signing someone with our capspace or MLE is 1 rotation player added.
Signing someone with our smaller exception, room exception or what it is called is 1 rotation player.
Making a trade involving our high 2nd round pick, the Bucks pick or future picks is 1-2 rotation players

So that is 4-5 already.

Nowhere did Jones ever say that no rookie will be part of the rotation next year. He just said he does not want to RELY only on young guys to be able to win. What that likely means is that they are going to pursue a starting caliber PG even if they draft Morant or a starting caliber PF even if they add Zion.

Like Morant, Telfair was supremely athletic, could jump out of the gym, excelled at slashing and getting to the basket and could score in a number of creative ways despite having a suspect outside shot.

Like Morant, Telfair was capable of making some beautiful passes, often threading the needle to do so. Like Morant in college, Telfair could put up gawdy assist numbers in high school.

Like Morant, Telfair had more of a playground style of play, was flashy but often sloppy in execution and suspect in decision making and was therefore prone to turnovers.

Like Morant, Telfair had the athletic ability to defend well but often had defensive lapses due to lack of discipline.

Like Morant, Telfair was considered the next big thing but could never lead his team to any kind of success.

I earlier drew the comparison between Morant and Telfair's cousin, Stephon Marbury...but Marbury was less athletic than both Telfair and Morant, Marbury had a better outside shot, and Marbury led his Georgia Tech squad to the Sweet Sixteen.

I dont think you remember Sebastian Telfair very well.

He was a small and quick PG with good handles and not much else.

Athletic ability to defend is nothing anyone ever said about Telfair.

Telfair was never considered the next big thing in the NBA. He was a highschool draft pick and it was a huge surprise to everyone how early Portland picked him and there were whispers that it was influenced by the contract Telfair had signed with Adidas.

Didn't Telfair have that whole video biography that kind of led to his hype?

Plus the Marbury connection too and that was when Stephon's star was still shining brightly.

Agreed. It's a ridiculous comparison. Telfair was a pint sized PG who could really only dribble.

Ja has dominated at the collegiate level. I actually like him more than I liked Young last year.

I would normally agree, but this years draft looks like one that could easily only have 2-3 that will actually be effective as rookies.

As much as I like Morant, I just don't see him being a very effective rookie. It's going to be a huge step up in competition and he needs to get quite a bit stronger to deal with NBA defenders.

The only two that I am comfortable saying can make a solid impact as rookies are Zion and Barrett. Zion will likely already be a good player as a rookie and Barrett has a skill set that makes it very likely that he can at least make a solid impact as a rookie.

Now I would be completely cool with drafting Morant as long as he is no more than the back-up PG at the start of next season.

I'm sure there are going to be more than 2-3 that are going to make an impact, there are rookies each year that come from later in the draft or ones that people don't expect that look good first year the problem is I doubt the sun's will find one of those. I actually see a few players that I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were decent their rookie year

Sure their will be, but that doesn't change the point I am making. In other drafts (like last years') you can legitimately point to 5-10 players that you feel confident will have an impact as a rookie. This draft does not have the depth that would make me feel that way about 5-10 players. Sure their will be rookies that surprise, but that doesn't mean that the one we pick somewhere between 3-5 will be one of them.

No I agree with you that we probably don't pick one of those if we fall out the top 2-3 i want to trade the pick if that happens, I'm just a little higher on the depth of this draft than I think most people are here

I don't hate the depth from the perspective of potential, but I just don't see a whole lot of guys that will have an impact immediately.

The other issue with this draft is that, at least on the surface, most of the talent is at the wing positions.

They’re going to get dimes and quarters on the dollar. It will look terrible long time.

Morant has poor handles from what I saw tonight. He’s so raw but such a great athlete that he gets anywhere he wants especially the FT line.

If Jones got #1 and traded out, I would be done with the NBA

I like Morants potential but I'm curious about Garland too, small sample size since he got hurt but he looks like he has elite shooting and has good vision with good handles

Good post and I agree. Look, beyond a miracle and the Suns getting #1 for a second straight offseason, I think Morant is the guy@2 or 3.
