The Jacksonville Jaguars have made nine signings since the NFL free agency period began. What grades did NFL analysts give them for these signings?
After a four-win season, this roster needed some reshaping, which is why we saw a flurry of moves from GM James Gladstone on Monday. However, unlike in years past, the Jaguars have maintained some salary cap flexibility.
Even with nine signings, they still rank in the top half of the NFL in available salary cap space, according to Over the Cap, and they have maintained some long-term flexibility as well. In addition to relatively minimal salary cap impact in Year 1 of these contracts, they overall are shorter term and come with an out after a season or two if that's what ends up needing to happen.
Gladstone said during his press conference on Thursday that he wanted to raise the floor of the roster with free agency, and he believes he did that. Gladstone would add that the goal isn't to win the offseason but to win games when the season starts.
But how do various NFL analysts feel the Jaguars did?
Grade: C+
Grade: B
Frank Schwab: "The Jaguars signed help at multiple spots without spending a lot. That is practically what the Commanders did in free agency last year."
Grade: C
CBS Sports: "Jacksonville's big splash on Day 1 was landing former Ravens offensive lineman Patrick Mekari to a $37.5 million deal. The Jags desperately needed to boost the offensive line, particularly at guard which Mekari can play along with tackle. In the secondary, they added potential starters in safety Eric Murray and corner Jourdan Lewis. On Day 2, Jacksonville lost a key contributor in Cisco to the Jets, but it hurts less considering what the Jags did on Monday."
Grade: C+
PFN: "The Jaguars need to re-stock Trevor Lawrence’s weapons after trading away Christian Kirk and releasing Evan Engram. However, both free agency and the draft are filled with slot options who could replicate some of the underneath targets Kirk and Engram provided, so there should be options to fill out their depth chart."
