Much to my surprise, Miami actually let him hit the open market. I hope the Cards make a play for him. I have not been an advocate of moving Levi Brown to guard, or do I know if he can play OG, but for a guy like Long, I would move Levi. The Cards could turn their OL into a strength rather quickly by signing Long and drafting Warmack. An OL of Long, Brown, Sendlein/Snyder, Warmack, and Massie would be, on paper, as good as the Cards have had in years.

The Cards can afford him and can structure the contract to make it work cap-wise. If Joe Flacco just signed a $120 mill contract that only counts as a 6.9 mill cap hit this year, the Cards can find a way to fit Long under the cap as well. Heck, re-structuring, or releasing, Rhodes and Kolb will make it very easy to sign Long.

All that being said, the Cards, despite Mikey's pre-stadium bravado, have yet to sign any FA's of note and usually only target/sign guys that have little, or no demand on the open market.

Cards don't have the cap money to sign any big agents especially Long. Sorry but it won't even be considered.

I didn't think anybody could be signed until March 12th?
I realize that.

That is not true. They can structure the contract to fit, cap-wise.

But, you are correct in that it may not be considered because the Cards think they need to re-sign guys like LSH and Rashad Johnson. You know, impact players of that ilk, rather than a pro bowl LT.

Bitter much? Haha...

I'd love to get Long too - but we're in a tough spot with the cap. I wouldn't be for releasing Rhodes, because he's one of our better defensive players, but if we decide to cut ties with Kolb, there may be a chance.

I don't think we'll pursue him unless he lowers his asking price. But, he'll probably get paid that somewhere.

And just a word of caution to signing the "big hit" free agents... these guys very often underperform after moving franchises. Miami wouldn't let him go if they didn't have a reason.

Sounds like a job for Super-Schmo! If we were to sign Long for the going rate for Pro Bowl LT's and release Levi, what would our likely cap-hit net out at for the next four or five years going forward? Who'd we have to cut/renegotiate to create cap room? What about a one-year "rent-a-tackle" deal?

I think they ought to look at William Beatty from the Giants at OT. Very underrated imho

I'm not bitter but when you see the money the Cards have thrown at complete garbage players like Stewart, Gay, Snyder, etc., why not throw money at a guy that can actually play.

I don't know what effect Licht and Keim will have on the Cards ventures into free agency but there is a player available that can help fill the team's 2nd biggest void, OL, go get him. Plus, LT's have shown they are about the safest signings/draftees a team can spend money on. Long won't sign and then all of a sudden stink it up. However, when you sign a guy like Snyder, who was bad before, to a big contract and all of a sudden expect him to play at a higher level, it doesn't make all that much sense to me.

I'll agree that Bradley and Snyder were poor pickups - and hugely overpaid. Gay actually wasn't terrible, and we didn't overpay for him. You can lambaste those bad moves, but you have to admit that we've gone out and spent the money to acquire major players in Edgerrin James and Kevin Kolb. Now, they didn't produce like we had hoped, but that's exactly where I caution spending a ton on major guys.

Look at guys like Nmandi Asomugha that were heavily pursued and then got to their new team to much mediocrity. The only really solid example I can think of that has made a huge impact on his team in recent years has been Julius Peppers.

The other guys, that are acquired at cheaper prices, have given much better production for their contract.

Word on the street is that he is looking for a contract that will pay him $11M annually, saw it on SI Truth & Rumors. Definitely out of ARZ's price range.

Long be on the decline over the last 2 years. With 2 major injury and a bunch of minor back, shoulder, and knee injury.

I also heard that. But, I also heard that his market will be softer than that and he likely won't get what he's seeking. The same can be said for Andre Smith and the $9 mill/year he is seeking.

Jake Long is damaged goods asking for 10-11 mil per year. Beware to anyone who signs this guy. Think about it, no one lets a franchise LT walk without compensation. Miami could have made the numbers work and chose not to....that should speak volumes. Pass.

Not necessarily true. The Cards let Leonard Davis and Simeon Rice, two players that played premium positions that don't often hit the market, walk without compensation and both went on to productive careers elsewhere. To a lesser extent, position-wise, you can say the same about Rolle and Dansby.

This is the year to get a LT. No excuses. 3 LT's in the draft and some free agents. I think Long gets about 9mil a year. I think we either take Geno Smith at one or Fisher.

When he hits Free Agency he will find out what his market value will be. Should not be any where near 11 mill a year.

Cutting Levi this season only saves us $800K against the salary cap. We'd still have to find another $2M somewhere, and then another $5M to sign the rookies.

Basically, you can sign Jake Long and say goodbye to LSH, Toler, R. Johnson, and Q. Groves and replace them with undrafted rookie free agents and guys who are still looking for jobs in late April, or you can sign 4-5 guys.

Jake Long is a risk. He wants one more big career contract and if he gets it does he phone it in. He is not healthy. May even have some chronic injuries. I can see some other team overpaying him.

PS. His wife is hot and would make a nice addition to the wives/girlfriends roster.

In all fairness, Davis and Rice did not end two consecutive years on IR. I would prefer the Cardinals sign Andy Levitre-OG rather than sign Jake Long. Long just hasn't been consistent the last two years and has really struggled with speed rushers. I am very hesitant to give Long a big, long term deal.

Levi Brown-LT
Andy Levitre-LG
Lyle Sendlein-C
Chance Warmack-RG
Bobby Massie-RT

...is a pretty damn good offensive line if you ask me. Sendlein is still upgradable as is Levi, but other than that, you have a young core in Levitre, Warmack and Massie all under 27. Hell Levi Brown will only be 29 this year.

Long story short, pass on Jake Long.

All this does is make me wonder why we didn't draft Martin Last year instead of Floyd, or how he fell to the 2nd round...unbelievable. Long is out of our range, but maybe Bryant McKinee would be a good 2 year guy to help develop our younger tackles.

I don't know if I agree with the first assessment, as I haven't watched much Dolphins football to know. I would expect that, were this going to happen, it would have happened already, since Long got a bigger rookie contract than he's going to get as a 2nd contract.

As for the second assertion, I completely and totally agree. Jackie Long is super hot.

Long has been less athletic over the past two years which has really caused him to struggle with speed rushers. He just isn't moving as quick as he did out of college. Back issues could cause this, but after two years of disappointing play, I am begining to believe that he is more Levi Brown than Joe Thomas IMO. I would take Branden Albert, Eugene Monroe, Joe Staley, Trent Williams, and Joe Thomas over Jake Long at this point and probably even Ryan Clady, Matt Kalil, Russell Okung, and Duane Brown as well.
