DENVER (AP) -- Barreling around the corner like a pulling guard, Peyton Manning cleared the way for an extra five yards.

So maybe it wasn't the best idea to have the quarterback as the lead blocker in a preseason game, but Manning wasn't about to let up.

Manning had two touchdown passes in the first half, then threw a key block to set up another score as the Indianapolis Colts beat the Denver Broncos 28-23 Monday night.

"We're playing on national television and I don't care if it is the preseason," said Manning, who finished 15-for-22 for 157 yards. "You want to try to send some kind of message to the other teams and to the country that we feel like we're going to have a good team this year."

Recent injuries to quarterbacks Michael Vick and Chad Pennington had some bemoaning that the preseason is too long, but Manning played as if it was a playoff game.

He threw touchdown passes to Dallas Clark and Brian Allen in the first half, then was the lead blocker on a 16-yard double reverse by Marvin Harrison on the Colts' first drive of the third quarter.

Manning got in several good shots on Denver cornerback Kelly Herndon on the reverse before walking back to the huddle with a big smile on his face.

Allen scored on a 4-yard run six plays later, stiff-arming Sam Brandon at the line to put the Colts (2-1) up 21-13 with 4:49 left in the third quarter.

"You can't worry about that. You have to go play," Colts coach Tony Dungy said of potential injuries to his blocking quarterback. "Usually, when you're playing hard, good things happen for you."

Denver quarterback Jake Plummer got the playing hard part right, but that didn't stop him from being booed in his first home game with the Broncos.

Plummer fumbled his first snap, threw a pass that Colts linebacker Gary Brackett should have intercepted, and missed a wide-open Ed McCaffrey on what would have been an 18-yard touchdown. And that was just on the first drive.

"I don't think he was nervous," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "I just think he was like everybody else -- looking forward to playing the game."

Plummer was much better on Denver's second drive, thanks to Ashley Lelie.

Plummer rolled out on the first play of the series, thought about running, then pulled up for a pass at the last second. Lelie adjusted to the slightly underthrown ball and made a leaping grab over Mike Doss for a 55-yard touchdown.

But that was about it for Plummer.

He dropped another snap in the second quarter, then was booed after Anthony Floyd intercepted his overthrown pass on Denver's first drive of the third period.

It was his final pass before Steve Beuerlein took over midway through the third quarter.

"I'm not too concerned," said Plummer, who was 15-for-22 for 205 yards. "Things will improve. I'm not happy with the way it ended. Nobody wants to throw a pick on their last throw."

The Colts sputtered early before getting things going late in the first quarter. After managing just 27 yards on its first two drives, Indianapolis moved 66 yards in nine plays for its first score. Manning capped the drive with a 14-yard pass to Clark, who was wide open after no one covered the middle for the Broncos (2-1).

The Colts didn't take long to score again.

Allen took a screen pass from Manning on the third play of the next drive, got a key block from guard Rick Demulling and turned it into a 53-yard touchdown.

Demulling took out safety Kenoy Kennedy near the 20-yard line, and Allen leaped over the corner pylon from about four yards out to put the Colts up 14-10.

"We played like we had been off 10 or 12 days, and it took us a while to get back the groove," Dungy said. "I like the way we bounced back."

Indianapolis' Jim Kubiak hit Aaron Moorehead on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 2:38 left. Denver cut the lead to 28-23 on a 5-yard pass from Danny Kanell to Dwayne Carswell with 40 seconds left, but the Colts recovered the ensuing on-side kick.

Game notes
Indianapolis backup QB Brock Huard missed his third straight game with a broken index finger on his throwing hand. ... The teams will play again Dec. 21 in Indianapolis. ... Denver LT Ephraim Salaam played in the preseason for the first time after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Aug. 1. ... Denver's Jason Elam hit field goals of 36, 39 and 42 yards. ... Broncos RB Clinton Portis didn't play in the second half because of a bruised calf, but the injury wasn't considered serious.

Damn it only took us 6 years to start booing him.

I wonder if he'll be able to use his rat's ass line this year.

The first of many boos, I'm afraid....

I really don't hate Jake, I just know he is what he is.... A guy who can't read defenses, and is careless with the ball.

He's no longer our problem and I'm grateful for it. It was time to go in another direction. I wish him no real ill-will. I'm not saying I want him to be all-world either.

What I can't take, are all the Bronco fans who have told me personally (people at work, ones I've run into on NFL forums, etc. ) that he will be the next Elway, and that we Cardinal fans don't know what we are talking about. Despite the fact we witnessed the debacle first-hand. Like 6 years of watching him not perform is simply an illusion, and it was the system's fault. That is simply hooey, and we all know it....

I wish we hadn't told all those Bronco fans, we told them so! :)

One thing for sure. He won't get away with it in Denver. They will run him out of town. He's on a much shorter leash now.

LOL.....

Although, it looked more like a punt, than a throw. That thing was wobbling end-over-end. Looked like the ball had been kicked.

I'll take Blake's arm over Plummer.

Jake will always show the good things. His receivers over there catch the ball. That is going to make a difference.

But he will have an over abundance of false starts, Q.B. fumbles, drive killing sacks and ints.

From what I saw he will always do the above, but his bad passes are being caught. His receivers have shown adjustments and the ability to catch the bad pass. I don't know how long that will last. But I know the really bad pass is just a play away.

I've never seen a QB fumble more exchanges than him.It was so typical that the 1st play i see him all year is a fumbled center/qb exchange.

See, I really don't want Jake to do bad, because he was a pretty nice guy who wanted to win, honestly. Problem is, he's just not very good.

But it's not his fauly, it's the media's fault that people think he's much better than he appears.

I want him to fail JUST SO the media will see that it wasn't just the "garbage dump" Arizona Cardinals fault that he stunk...it is just that he's really not that great.

In part thats true but why does Shanahan listen to the media then? I like Jake but in all reality he's a great back-up. I watched Blake and Plummer over thier games this week, Blake really is a gun and he knows where he wants his passes to go for the most part. Jake has that "side arm" thing going on that really has little power to it. The 60yrd TD was more LeLie (sp) that Jake. I'm sure we'll have comparisons all year long and why not, it's interseting and fun!! To me anyway.

I was at our childbirth class last night and someone said they had seen Jake at a restaurant around town (Denver) on Sunday night.

My response was: "How many interceptions did he throw?"

So far the Freak board is mixed, he either played great with a couple of mistakes, or he played nervous(7th year QB's shouldn't be THAT nervous) or he stunk.

DC of course is now touting Jake's passer rating, could of sworn he spent the last 4 years saying that stat is meaningless.

You are 100% correct. He said that passer rating was a meaningless stat. I beginning to believe so as well, Jake sucks, there's no way that it means he's good..:D

But of course he doesn't care what we think, since we are a bunch of worthless homers according to him. And defenses NEVER stacked the box against us last year....

What a liar.

He also said Madden hasn't seen Jake play very often. I know we didn't usually get the A team on FoX but I know I've seen Madden do our games several times in the last 6 years. That was because madden said Jake wasn't accurate.

Right now the spinning is in full effect, short gameplan, vanilla offense, not a real game, he got all the kinks out.

Realistically Jake could have had 2 INT's, 2 lost fumbles and that falling backwards pass could have easily been a TO as well. the game would have been completely different if the Colts had made the plays Jake gave to them.

Didn't you watch Dave Krieg? Actually, if Plummer can stay in the league for a while, he may be on pace to break Krieg's record for fumbles!

Thank you Cardsfan473 I've been telling fools this all along. That almost pick looked just like the Chargers, Falcons and Cowboy game where a LB stepped in front and took it to the house.

Poor , Poor , Jake mama hung him in the closet and he is feeling so sad~ hIt's very interesting to see how some wish him well and know he will fail and some think he stinks and are looking for media folks to agree with them.
Jake is Jake and will sometimes look like a snake and sometimes look like a bug on a windshield. There is no in between.

He did it all last night from the really funny to the great athlete. That my friends is the long and short story of Jake The Snake Plummer.

Now back to our program, Blake look sand throws over the middle to Freddioe Jones for a Cardinals TOUCHDOWN!

The Denver Post has a front page poll grading Jake's game. 42% of nearly 5000 votes gave him an F, I gave him a D you have to give credit for the TD pass.

Funny watching it live I didn't think it was underthrown but every description I've seen says it was including the ones by Bronco fans. If it's caught that's all that matters so I gave him a D.

It was underthrown. Lelie had to come to a stop to catch it. If he wasn't 10 yards open when Jake let it go it would have been a pick, too. But, you're right--it's a catch and TD--gotta give him credit for that.

My take on Jake has been from day one that he would make a great back-up QB who you could bring in the 4th quarter and get you a TD. He was really hyped to much by both the fans and media as the next Joe Montana and he never paid his dues by sitting on the bench and learning. When a guy starts winning a lot of games in the last quarter this is really not a great stat in my mind as this will eventually catch up with you. You want to go into the 4th quarter in front and beat your opponents into the ground. Jake would have been better off playing for some team other than his hometown AZ fans. I personally do not think it is a great thing for a player to be playing in his home town as a rookie. To much pressure on the coach to play him before he is ready and to much pressure on the player. I will never forget the fans cheering when Kent Graham went down with a injury and Jake comming in.
