Since it so closely paralleled our history, it just made me mildly uncomfortable. Those were sad times for the Native Americans; I wonder if any would actually go see this movie if they knew.
I have a friend who is Native American. He went in knowing what it would be like and was hoping that it would be "pro-native."
He loved the movie. :p

Already the 4th highest worldwide gross of all time in only 3 weeks. Will it catch Titanic?

IMO, total revenue is a joke. 75% of the ticket sales are from 3-D and IMAX where the tickets are 25% higher. They need to have total tickets sold as a bench mark. If Avatar beats Titanic, it will be with half the number of tickets sold.

It won't be with half the numbers sold. On the opening weekend, the gross from IMAX was about 10% of the total. The regular 3D theaters only charge a dollar more, usually.

Entertainment Weekly had a article that said the surcharge was between $3 and $6 and that 75% of tickets sold so far included the surcharge, not to mention that when Titanic came out the average ticket price was 4.69 and today it 7.19, so yes, it will be talk when you include the surcharge for 3D and IMAX.

Nevertheless, almost everyone I know who has seen it intends to see it again, and those who've seen it twice are planning on a third round, and we're late-middle-aged people who NEVER do stuff like that anymore.

btw, I have a friend who is a botany/biology specialist, and he said the tiny details in terms of plant structures, etc. are almost flawless. He felt that the level of realistic scientific detail that went into creating the Navi and their world is unprecedented.

Titanic was huge :)

Personally I think given the wild inflation numbers in ticket prices all movies should be benchmarked on butts in seats period.

The gross stuff is just Hollywood macho, Since 1913 a dollar has lost 95% of it's purchasing power so to be fair throughout time it should all just be per viewer to keep it fair.

Gee! the story was pretty predictable and nothing special but if you like special effects and 3D this was the best I have ever seen.It was worth the $11 matinee ticket price.

How old are your kids now? My daughter is 5 and really wants to see it. I saw it the other day and I think she would enjoy it but I'm not sure if she could last that long.

Great movie. Reminded me of when I saw Jurassic Park for the first time. The visuals were just amazing.

Finally went to see this. Very good movie but way over hyped.

The 3D and CGI effects were fantastic. IMO one thing they did a great job with was integrating real actors with CGI characters. Another example of how to do CGI right (see Star Wars TPM to see how to do it wrong). Unlike Star Wars, the CGI never distracted me or pulled me out of the movie. I didn't get that "hey I am watching a CGI cartoon" like the Gungan Droid battle did for me in the Star Wars TPM.

The story was also decent. The best way I can describe it was science fiction meets "The Circle of Life". Is it the best movie ever? No. It is the best science fiction movie ever? No. However, that doesn't mean it wasn't a good movie. My wife hates science fiction for the most part and she thought this was a good movie.

IMO you do need to see this movie in 3D. It would take something away to see this in standard format. Having said that it didn't break any new ground IMO as many were saying with 3D. I heard pre-release talk that this would "reinvent 3D". That was all hype.

What it did do is use 3D correctly. There were not things being poked "in your face" every 2 minutes to remind you this movie was in 3D which I hate. To me is was a "sum" of things that made the effects great. Like I stated above, integrating "real world" with CGI was probably the best I have seen. Now couple that with using 3D correctly and that is what made the effects fantastic IMO.

I recommend for those sitting on the fence to go see this.

I saw it in Imax last night, but it really wasn't Imax, it was basically just a bigger screen.
