At what point did he think having a pit bull around his 2 year old was a good idea?

Much of a dog's behavior is related to the way it is trained, raised and treated.

Still, I would never own a breed that is known to be aggressive, especially if I had kids.

Hope everyone recovers okay.

The dog was always locked up. Harrison wasn't at home. His wife, who does not live at the home, was at the home and let the dog out near their son. Strange home life.

I have a Pitbull Terrier and twin 8 year-olds. Her behavior around them is exemplary and I watch her closely every minute just like I would any large breed of dog around my love.

You say that now.. But them dogs can snap for no reason no matter how they are bred..

Yep.....I have a Bull Terrier/Sharpe mix. 5 years old and well trained. I had taken in an abandoned Labrador in a foreclosed house across the street until we could find a non-kill shelter or a family to take him. One day, I was giving them treats and I mistakenly gave the Lab a treat before my dog and he took exception and attacked myself and the Lab. I sustained deep wounds on my hand and legs requiring stitches. We got rid of the Lab that night.

Lesson learned is that dogs can lose control at any given moment.

To live in fear of the unknown is to live in fear of life. If you are comfortable with how you live your life, you go with your choices..I know the breed, have been around it all my life, including the less than legal aspects when I was young and ill-informed..Had them as pets growing up, no people-problems whatever. Animal-problems, yes. we are a 1 animal family.

But to live your life ignorant of facts is just plain stupid..

I sometimes have wondered, but have never said anything.. But your posts are very strange.. Do you live on the same planet as us?

What your just basically said is this.. Your throwing facts out the window.. It will never happen to you since it hasnt happen to you yet.. Way to take precautions..

I have nothing for you then.. Except.. Good luck..

Gee! Thank you for your offer of good luck, though couched in less than friendly language..I'm less than ignorant of the REAL facts that are out there about Pit Bulls..I wonder, transversely, if you are as conversant on the real deal about this breed, or if you spout the PETA line, instead...
I'm not stupid, though you may be Einstein-esque in comparison to me, you certainly don't have to read my posts, I live in Albuquerque- almost another world, and I take precautions, as I said in my prior post, every minute of every hour of every day she is with me and my children.

Pit bulls have been selectively bred for strength and aggression. IMO, it's foolish to pretend it's not the case. It's kind of like having a loaded gun in the house. Yeah, if you take care of it like you are supposed to, chances are nothing bad will happen. But, the mere fact that it's there gives a chance that didn't exist before.

It not a risk I would take. I don't like the breed very much. We have 2 greyhounds, a pug and a long haired mix of something small. All rescued, all wonderful, and all more threatened by my children than vice-versa. :D

Trust me, that is enough. This is an animal that was bred to hunt.

Hmmm... my child or my dog....

And that is why I said in my original post that, if I had children, I wouldn't have an aggressive breed of dog in my home.

Good post. I've "met" some nice pits and some not-so-nice other dogs and vice versa. Personally, when I decide to settle down, I would love to adopt a greyhound, lab or mutt. Generally nice dogs.

Gee is dead on. My wife worked in a vet clinic for many years. Every pit bull owner said the same thing. "He was so good around our kids and then he just snapped and wouldn't let go". My wife estimates she put 50 of them down for attacking people and kids.

They should be illegal to own if you have children. I liken it to leaving a gun and some bullets on the floor of your kid's playroom

ajcardfan, you are right that it's a calculated risk taking a chance owning a pitbull, and I know that's where Gee! is coming from also, that I'm stupid for putting my children at risk of getting bit by a dangerous animal. I appreciate where you are coming from, and appreciate more your concern for the safety of my children. Thank you ajcardfan. I'll reassess our 5 year commitment to my dog, and have friends who are childless that most definitely would want her-she's just been perfect with my twins since they were little little, they are quite attached.

I can think of a bunch of other things that should be illegal for parents before that.

Anyway, here are two cases. My one cousin had a pitt. Had a son. Wife told the husband to get rid of the dog. Dog was gone. My other cousin had a lab puppy. There was a conflict between my cousin and someone else. Dog got upset. Bit my cousin's two-year old in the head and face. She had to have plastic surgery and has scars to this day.

It's tough to give up an animal you love, but your openmindness to even considering it is commendable. Most people around here would rather die than change their mind or admit they might be wrong. :D

Personally, knowing what I know, I don't think I'd ever get over something happening to my kid like happened to Harrison's. I wish you all the best with your pet and children.

this is kind of like the people who point to accidents where the victim couldn't get out of their seat belt and died as a reason as to why they don't wear seat belts. Sure, you can find stories like that, but it's all a matter of odds.

That wasn't what I was getting at at all.

My point was that bad things can happen with pets regardless of breed. Are pits more aggressive? Yes, as are chows and rotts, which is why many apartment complexes won't allow them. Still, a decent amount of aggression depends on how the animal is raised. Personally, I am SUPER glad my cousin gave up his pitt. He didn't give that dog enough care (which is something he sadly carried over with his son).

BTW, I wouldn't have a dog in my house that was even slightly aggressive because I wouldn't want it to hurt my cats. So I certainly wouldn't have one in my house if I had children. :)
