This is the big name guy that I was talking about. We didn't get John Fox but we can get Jeff Fisher. Pay the man and put him to work!

The timing of this is the most surprising part of it.
Given the apparent friction between Fisher and Bud Adams, I wouldn't be surprised if Adams purposely waited until all of the other head coaching vacancies were filled before parting ways with Fisher, so that he could not get another job right away.

I can't see him accepting a job as an assistant. He'll sit until the next HC job comes open.

Jeff Fisher is about as far from overrated as you can get.

Really? 5 playoff wins and 3 of them came in one season? For a guy who lasted as long as he did he sure rode an unwarranted reputation of success.

Fisher will be a Head Coach in the NFL in 2012. He will be on the top of the lists.(i.e Bengals, Dolphins, Texans)

You did, in fact, post that. :)

Did some quick research trying to figure out who it was I was thinking of...it was Wally, but apparently there were plenty on here that figured Fisher was toast. :)

Thank you. Thank you very much ( appropriately spoken in an Elvis voice )

BTW, I am of the thought, that Fisher is calling this one too. Payback for the embarrassment Bud caused Fisher. If Cowher is in demand, Fisher should be enshrined. He is Cowher +, but then I ain't a Cowher fan. Next years coaches in waiting.

I would think Ross just painted himself into a corner by resigning Sparano and Ireland ( which may be the only way he could get rid of Parcells).

Yep. Add Billick in there, too.

I think the pressure is on all HCs in the league a little more than usual based on the coaching talent out there. Usually, you can't find ANYONE without a bunch of warts, next year you have at least two guys in Fisher and Cowher. ...Maybe Dungy if someone can coax him out of the studio.

Lots of uncertainty - Would a former HC (not hurting economically) accept a "demotion" to DC? Does his current contract with the Titans include a one-year non-compete clause? Would he rather wait for another pro or college HC spot to open up? Would the Cards be willing to pay him what he thinks he's worth? Fisher's been a 4-3 coach - Cards have a 3-4 base defense.

Let me attack the final point first. Although Fisher has technically utilized a 4-3 defense, he was part of Buddy Ryan's 46 defense as a Bear and still employs a lot of its principles and philosophy - namely an aggressive blitzing pass rush overloading one side or the other. When you strip away all the bells and whistles, I'm not sure Fisher's defense is all that different from the 3-4 anyway. And, besides, the Cards, under Clancy and Billy, have mixed in a lot of 4-3 (& occasionally some 5-2) with their three-man fronts.

All I know is that Jeff has a 16-year professional track record of putting lights-out defenses on the field and his presence would be a huge net-plus for the Cardinal defense. While I think the possibility of Fisher as a Cardinal is a long-shot, I'm really keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm not sure that I would want Fisher for one year only as he certainly is going to get HC calls for the 2012 season. Then we are back on the market for another DC. Hire one of the targets (i.e. Bowles, Moss, Butler, Horton) and give them a 3 year deal.

As Duck said, get a grip. Tennessee is a low-revenue franchise that has essentially had to start from scratch from a personnel standpoint at least twice in Fisher's tenure. Despite that, he has FOUR DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS. They were in the same division as the early 2000 ravens and the Steelers for a while.

Fisher's had to rebuild both sides of the ball on his franchise twice. And only once that I can remember has his team utterly flatlined. Without big-name stars, the Titans under Fisher have been a competitive franchise for 15 years.

I think Fisher's winning % is actually pretty good for this era of the NFL. The coaches with the gaudier records didn't have to deal with free agency. Plus the four division championships are an excellent point when you share your division with the Colts. Really, only Belichick and Reid are ahead of him in terms of overall consistency, IMO.

So four division championships and he can't win home playoff games? Overrated.

I guess. Who isn't an overrated Head Coach? Bill Cowher had to go on the road to win his first Super Bowl, because the Steelers kept collapsing when they had home field advantage.

What a great addition to our staff, but he will take some time off and wait for the job to open up in New York. Great Coach, who ever gets him gets a "GEM".

guys who coach for the same team for 16 years ain't stepping down for a year to be a DC. He'll sit out the year and that makes next year's list of available coaches that much better if Wiz falls on his face this year.

Yup. I'll bet in the settlement he's taken care of well enough specifically because all of the HCing gigs are already filled.

You might see him in the booth or in a studio next season, but you won't see him on a sidelline.

Are you asking if anybody can name 10 better coaches than Jeff Fisher, whether they are employed or not at the moment? if you are that is very poor grammar from you Mr Pariah.

If you are, im not saying that Im gonna name the ten, just had to fulfill my daily dose of random criticism :mulli:

Yeah, that was a mess. I started one thought and finished with another.

Who's better than Fisher? I'll bet you can't name 10 of his peers, employed or not, that are better.

actually, there's only one scenario where Fisher becomes a DC for a year and that's if a majorly respected coach, like andy reid, offered him the job. no way fisher works for someone who's not his equal and at this point, ain't no way to claim wiz is at that level.
