The Suns are targeting Joe Smith. What's the consensus? Happy or not? He can't roll to the hole like Amare, but shot blocks and rebounds might actually go up!

Where did you hear this? Not doubting you, just curious.

I would take him. He is a legit big body that can take up space on the floor and help you guard bigger guys that Dudley and Lou can't guard.

He is not going to replace Amare's scoring but I think this team has proven they can still score without Amare. He is about the same level IMO of a rebounder and defender as Amare and that's all you can ask for getting a cast off from another team.

Smith still has game and he'd be a great fit. If by some miracle he and the Suns can agree to terms, that would be fantastic.

If the suns could land smith, it would be a nice acquisition. Smith fills the hole at PF better than anyone else available now.

he's obviously not discontent where he's at. if he's going to ask for a buyout, he's going to a contender like Cleveland (whom he used to play for and could really use his services), Orlando, San Antonio, etc.

But if what he wants is another contract, the suns could be his best option, he will get the most minutes and have the best stats here.

I don't think Joe Smith really needs to prove what he can and cannot do on the basketball court to people in the league. He's a known quantity.

He'd help the Suns, but I would be surprised if he ended up here.

According to the most recent news, Joe Smith didn't ask for a buyout, he is content to stay there. Instead, the OKC FO is talking to his agent about a buyout, which is purely a money saving attempt.

But hell yes, the Suns is not anything close to contentder to draw his interest. He'd probably end up in San Antonio or Cleveland.

The article in no way says the Suns are actually pursuing him, OKC has not indicated they are going to buy him out, and Smith has stated he is not going to seek a buyout.

Much ado about nothing...

Antoine Walker and Robert Horry are the only other 2 veterans available. WHAT A NIGHTMARE!

I hear rumblings about Drew Gooden being bought out (not sure how probable that is). I think Gooden could give us 15 and 10 a night as a starter and could play center when Shaq is out. I'd rather have Gooden over Smith if given the choice, but I doubt the Suns will have a choice. We're probably lucky to get Sims.

This is what I took from the article by Bob Young dated 2-25-09 from The Arizona Republic.

General Manager Steve Kerr would not comment on specifics, but said the Suns hope to sign a veteran. If they can't find help there, they'll find it in the developmental league.

Absolutely nothing new. Bob Young is simply saying Joe Smith would be the most likely target. If Paul Coro were saying it then I might get more excited.

Well, I wouldn't say the Suns are lucky to have Sims. I do like Gooden. If he were to cough up a million of his guaranteed money then he might be an option.

If I was Sarver, if he really wants to make the playoffs, time to pay the luxury tax! ;)

Aren't they already over the LT limit? Or were they previously?

Smith not seeking buyout might be just a bargaining move to get as much as possible from OKC. For both him and Gooden, Suns would make the most sense if they'd want to play for another contract. Now Gentry is reinstalling part of SSOL, TimThomas looms large on the horizon for them to want to sacrifice their playing time and future contract to play a minor role with Cavs or Celts.
