BRONCOS RE-SIGN LB JOHNNY RUTLEDGE

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.—The Denver Broncos Tuesday re-signed linebacker Johnny Rutledge, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.

Rutledge, 6-3, 239 pounds, signed with the Broncos during the season last year (11/12) and played the final six games (inactive for one), primarily in a special teams role. He finished the year with one defensive tackle and four special teams tackles. Before coming to Denver, Rutledge was in training camp with Baltimore, but was waived in the final cutdown. Prior to that, Rutledge played four years with the Arizona Cardinals, after he was selected in the second round (51st overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft out of Florida. In 46 career games (4 starts), Rutledge has compiled 43 total tackles, including 21 solo, and has added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

While at the University of Florida, Rutledge started 35 games, and was an All-Southeastern Conference first-team choice as a senior, and a second-team pick as a junior. One of 10 semi-finalists for Dick Butkus Award, annually given to the nation's top linebacker, he moved from outside to middle linebacker and finished second on the team with 105 tackles (61 solo), 1.5 sacks, and eight stops for losses of 19 yards during his final campaign.

Born Jan. 4, 1977, Rutledge was a SuperPrep and USA Today All-America selection at Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, Fla., and added All-Florida class 4A and Palm Beach Post defensive player-of-the-year honors as a weak-side linebacker. With 162 tackles and five sacks as a senior, he rated among the nation's top five prep linebackers by the National Blue Chip Recruiting Service.

What incredible production for a 2nd round pick. Truly a marvelous choice by our old Tobin boys.

I dunno, played is a strong word.

Yeah, I'll drink to that!

Looking at the above photo causes me to wonder if they signed Rutledge as a LB or a Nose Tackle.

Rutledge most certainly is NOT another reclamation project...he's bounced around more than a high-bounce ball since we dumped his worthless behind.

Have there really been that many CARD "reclamation projects"?

I have a hard time remembering many players who were not very good with Arizona that blossomed elsewhere.

Hasn't it mainly been the Cards better performers who have moved on to continued success with other teams that have made us look silly?

Fatefehi is nothing special with the Broncos. So you have Walker with the Eagles. ONE guy out of all the washouts that have come through Tempe under Tobin/McGinnis.

Quite a trend.

I forgot about Corey Chavous. He's a pro bowler in Minnesota. The cards have had talent, just not enough of it and no one to develop it.

Yes he is, as a safety.

We asked to to move to safety, he wouldn't as he wan't to go FA as a CB and make more $$.

He went to Minn as a CB I think then sucked. As he now was on a long term contract he had little choice but switch when they asked him.

From hs iview I think it was win/win. Get FA CB $$ which is far better than safety, then switch and make the pro bowl.

It's a little of both. Most think all our players suck (with few exceptions) until they go somewhere else.

I did some research on this. Chavous for instance was a good player for the Cards especially during the '98 season. But even if you count him as a "reclamation" project you have 3 total in Fatafehi, Walker and Corey who were better with other teams.

Compare that to this list going back to 1996: McElroy,Johnny McWilliams, Graham, Dexter,STamps, McGee, Foley, JHayes,McCombs,RodBrown,Chad Carpenter,TyHoward, Mark Smith,
RonJanes,JomoCousins,PhilSavoy,ZachWalz,TerryHardy,MelvinBradley,YusefScott,ParisJohnson,JoelMakovica,ThomasBurke,JohnnyRutledge,SekouSanyika,JabariIssa,JayTantand Mao Tosi.

None of these guys went somewhere else and suddenly became a good enough player to make the Cards look silly.

So that is only 3 out of 31 castoffs!!!!!

It is the loss of guys like AWilliams and all but one of our six #1 selections from 1996 through 2000 that makes us look silly to other NFL fans.

Never heard of him.

EDIT: Now I remember him. He returned a kickoff for 13 yards for New England in 1998.
