Ellington was a 6th rounder though, right?

Yes, he was.

But apparently this kid was a top 100 player on some mocks.

*shrug*

Generally though, it was a guy I'd never ever heard of, at a position we already filled, but as I looked into it I got more intrigued and started to change my tune. I love the TY comparisons, especially with BA at the helm and thinking about Ginn and Brown on the field at the same time is very fun.

We'll see if he has legit skills in the preseason. Speed is great but if you can't actually run routes it doesn't help as much against NFL defenses.

whoa...a 6-7th round pick? Man...this draft better turn out to be really good, because I'm scratching my head a lot here.

You can't go by the pundits. There were a good amount of picks that the pundits didn't have any clue about. That's why the team rely s on their own scouts.

The Hilton comparison is real.

My second favorite pick of the draft so far behind Bucannon. This guy is so electric. He made it worth watching the East/West Shrine game.

But team captains can usually run routes and absorb coaching.

Team captains can absorb coaching. Team captains dont fight the power, they relay the vibe and set it up.

I would be a team captain if we had a hackey sack team.

Top - John Brown
Bottom - Ty Hilton

I think we all know why we got this guy.

Great post! Thank you! I've been writing about John Brown for a number of weeks now and the comparison to T.Y. Hilton is legit.

Great great post Gold and yes I remember Mitch posting about Brown and it's why I knew his name and about the Gorillas. :D

Anyone who doesn't read Mitch's draft info is making a huge mistake. He nailed Bucannon and Brown so far.

Best pick of the entire draft.

I agree. This is an exciting pick.

I don't know how many times last year I would bitch to my friend at the Cards game about how teams had little respect for us to go downfield and would crowd the LOS. Routinely, both S would be up in the 5 to 8 yard range.

Unless you're Richie Incognito. :D

I'm calling it now ----- this is going to be the best Pittsburg St. player on our team since Ron Moore.

Yep. Establishing a feeder system now from Pittsburg State to the Cardinals. :)

I'm still really concerned about this kid holding up physically in the NFL. Keim says he is fearless going across the middle. However the NFL is way different from Division II football. One or two big hits and this kid is done. I'm also concerned about his small hands. Could me a lot of dropped balls.

I'm pulling for the kid but I hope he is smart enough to avoid the big hits.

You just never know with injuries. He's not that much smaller than Hines Ward, who took, and delivered, unbelievable punishment and rarely missed games. Then you have Adonis-like players, like Andre Wadsworth, who just can't catch a break and are hurt all the time.

Plus, some guys have a knack for being able to slip the worst force of a hit. I think Manziel has that trait, I hope Brown can because he can be special with that speed.

Exactly. If he's got jets and hands he's a good pick. We know he's got jets, THEY must know he's got the hands too. Toughness.

Shades of JETSTREAM.

I think your avatar is a little out of date.

I don't know looking at whats on youtube he sure looks thin and wiry. Then again if you compare him to TY Hilton they are almost identical:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2011/profiles/t.y.-hilton?id=2532865

Lets hope he is the next Hilton for the Cardinals.

Ellington figures to get many more carries this year. He will undoubtedly miss some time due to injury. This guy can be the target for the short, underneath throws that adds explosiveness to offense when Ellington can't play. He also provides a good option as a punt returner. Think of him more as an insurance policy than an every down player. He can be used like Sproles was early in his career. By this point in the draft it's more about contributors than starters. Brown will contribute. He has solid character and was well thought of coming out of high school here in Florida. He's just a role player, but I think he will prove a valuable one. He'll have more impact than Martin in year one. This was a solid day 2 for the Cards.

If John Brown is the second coming of TY Hilton no one will be whining about him being 'a reach'. I watched TY Hilton {and Andrew Luck} shred the Seahawks secondary last season. If, and it is a big IF[/SIZE], John Brown has that ability this is the second best Cardinal pick in this draft no matter where it happened.

Well we passed on many better WR's in my opinion, I'm puking up BPA speak by Keim at this point. Also with 16 WR's taken in the first 2 days- at least 16 WR's will be pushed off bottom of NFL rosters by the final cuts in preseason- many if not all could compete with Mr. Brown for a Cardinals roster spot-

We were slotted to pick before the Niners and the Seahawks with our natural picks- We targeted Bucannon at 20 dropped back cause nobody else considered him close to 1st round value- We took him at 27 instead of trading down more to make sure we got him- HMMM I think the Rams , Niners and Sehawks did much more with less natural picks-

Again I was proud that Keim was closer to mainstream last year- This year he valuing players a round earlier than other successful teams- Same old Cardinals - Just like ghost of Cardinals draft past.

Glad to know that you can predict the future by suggesting that if we traded back further we would still have definitely gotten Bucannon. Also When teams cut their wide receivers during training camp they won't be cutting guys who run a 4:34 40 who also have good hands and who are solid route runners as well. I think it is pretty ridiculous that you are treating this like it's a terrible draft when no one has played a single snap yet.

Not in love with this pick. I think he would've been there in the 4th round, maybe even the 5th. If he fits the TY mold as many suggest, then we struck gold. Compared to perceived value and immediate impact players that were available, not sure this was the best choice
