Maybe Carlson was just doing what Jake Ballard did last year and retire to not take a roster spot of one the young guys.
I don't see losing Carlson as a big bad thing. We lose a guy Arians trusted, mentally, and to start, but he just isn't the player he was a few years back. IMO he was borderline serviceable. Fells, Nikalus, and Christian are going to need reps. I really want to see what these guys may be able to do.
Without him and Housler, our young guys have a chance to step it up and make some contributions. IMO we're just in that time period where we need some of these guys to step up, and they need playing time to do so.
It's also why I'm not too upset with not getting a CB after losing Cro...at some point Bethel and Mathieu (return to form after injury) have to step it up.
If no one emerges this year at TE, I'm sure we'll address it next offseason. But we spent a 2nd round pick, have been trying to develop Fells, and perhaps see Christian as that FB/H-Back/TE guy. This could be a good thing. Besides, I've felt since we signed him, Carlson was a concussion away from retirement anyways.
