Almost validates the Christian selection.

Didn't really see that coming. Guess the best for both parties. Apparently he doesn't want to compete for the job or try somewhere else. Best of luck to him.

Zach Miller is still out there.. hopefully he has more left in the tank than Heap did when he came here.

That is crazy.

Really puts the team in a bad spot, IMO.

Granted we have plenty of blocking tight ends...............wow, been a while since I could type that......heck, I don't think I ever have typed that.

I digress, no doubt Arians doesn't use a tight end much, but at this point who is going to be any sort of threat in the passing game from the position ?

He left a million dollars on the table. How many of you could do that? He doesn't owe us anything. Good luck and health to him and his family. And thanks for that TD last year.

Whatever.

Any employer looks to be given some sort of notice if you are leaving and want to leave in a respectable manner.

Best of luck to Carlson and it is no doubt his decision, but he didn't do the Cardinals any favors by retiring out of no where, and after free agency and the draft.

Also, not sure how many teams would have given Carlson the second/third chance that the Cardinals did, so yeah, he does owe them a little more then then what he did today, IMO.

Finally, I wouldn't leave the million dollars on the table, because I finish what I start, and if I cannot finish I do what is best for those who gave me the opportunity to try for said goal.

Or at least he should have let the team know he was considering it. That way they could have made accommodations to their drafting plan. If this was Palmer, I doubt you'd be singing the same tune.

Obviously this guy should do what is right for himself, but he should have communicated his thoughts earlier. All those 9er guys retired before the draft and FA so that the 49ers could try to replace them.

Maybe Carlson was just doing what Jake Ballard did last year and retire to not take a roster spot of one the young guys.

I don't see losing Carlson as a big bad thing. We lose a guy Arians trusted, mentally, and to start, but he just isn't the player he was a few years back. IMO he was borderline serviceable. Fells, Nikalus, and Christian are going to need reps. I really want to see what these guys may be able to do.

Without him and Housler, our young guys have a chance to step it up and make some contributions. IMO we're just in that time period where we need some of these guys to step up, and they need playing time to do so.

It's also why I'm not too upset with not getting a CB after losing Cro...at some point Bethel and Mathieu (return to form after injury) have to step it up.

If no one emerges this year at TE, I'm sure we'll address it next offseason. But we spent a 2nd round pick, have been trying to develop Fells, and perhaps see Christian as that FB/H-Back/TE guy. This could be a good thing. Besides, I've felt since we signed him, Carlson was a concussion away from retirement anyways.

Didn't Jake Locker and some 49ers player do the same thing?

Carlson got benched last year for Darren Fells and Rob Housler. Good for him, but let's not spend a lot of time pretending that John Carlson was good at football anymore.

I have no problem with him retiring at the start of OTAs and after the draft. It's not like the team gave O'Brien Schofield a ton of notice when they cut him and told him as he was walking onto the field for the first practice of training camp.

People's expectation for the TE position are ridiculous. There's only a very small handful of TE's that have ever existed than can do what some people think is needed.

This will really sting if Maxx Williams becomes an All Pro tight end. That's not likely, but he was the cream of a very lightly regarded tight end crop. Having taken Niklas last year, I don't know if the Cardinals would have taken him in the second round, but he was there for them.

We shouldn't have traded way our 2nd round pick. I was hoping the Cards would have taken Max Williams at #2. Instead, Baltimore got him with our second rounder! Williams was the top pass catching TE in the draft. I don't believe too many people felt Carlson was going to be around much longer and he wasn't.
